Ilya Lichtenstein, the self-proclaimed perpetrator of the 2016 Bitfinex Hacker Bitcoin Heist, made his first public statement since his 2022 arrest. In a five-minute video posted on X, Lichtenstein confessed to acting alone in the heist, denying allegations from a Netflix documentary that his father or any external agency was involved.

“My dad is no hacker; he doesn’t even know how to use Instagram,” Lichtenstein quipped in the video, recorded from prison during a remote visit with his wife, Heather Morgan. He expressed deep remorse for his actions, apologized to Bitfinex for the stress caused by the heist, and reflected on his wrongdoing. Lichtenstein is currently serving a five-year prison sentence for conspiracy to commit money laundering, which includes time spent in custody before sentencing.

Lichtenstein’s Restitution Efforts

In the video, Lichtenstein acknowledged the harm caused by his role in the Bitfinex Hacker Bitcoin Heist and shared updates on his efforts to return the stolen funds. Over the past three years, he has been working to recover the stolen Bitcoin as part of his plea agreement.

According to his lawyer, Samson Enzer, the government has recovered approximately 114,601 BTC (96% of the stolen 119,754 BTC), along with 29 additional valuable assets. A restitution hearing in February will determine whether these recovered funds will be returned to Bitfinex or distributed to affected customers.

“With significant help from Mr. Lichtenstein, the government has recovered nearly all of the assets stolen during the 2016 Bitfinex hack,” Enzer stated.

Heather Morgan’s Role in the Bitfinex Hacker Bitcoin Heist

Heather Morgan, Lichtenstein’s wife, pleaded guilty to charges of money laundering conspiracy and conspiracy to defraud the United States. Morgan, known by her rap alias “Razzlekhan,” became involved in laundering the stolen Bitcoin at Lichtenstein’s request years after the heist.

Morgan was sentenced to 18 months in prison for her role in Bitfinex Hacker Bitcoin Heist. Lichtenstein described her as a victim of his poor decisions, expressing regret for involving her in the crime. Morgan, known for her eccentric rap videos, has recently started selling custom videos on Cameo for $125 each. She is expected to begin her prison sentence next month.

The Netflix documentary on the Bitfinex Hacker Bitcoin Heist implied that a substantial portion of the stolen Bitcoin remains unaccounted for. However, Lichtenstein refuted this claim, stating that all the stolen funds had been accounted for and recovered.

Morgan echoed this sentiment, adding:
“It’s nice to begin to have the public record surrounding our case set straight. There are so many myths that I look forward to debunking when we tell the real story.”

A Future in Cybersecurity

Lichtenstein plans to turn his criminal past into a constructive future by pursuing a career in cybersecurity after his release. He expressed regret for wasting his talents on crime and hopes to use his expertise to combat cyber threats.

“When I am released from prison, I plan to dedicate myself to working in the cybersecurity industry. I know the cyber threats that we face, and I know how to stop them,” Lichtenstein stated.

Legacy of the 2016 Bitfinex Hacker Bitcoin Heist

The 2016 heist resulted in the theft of 119,754 BTC, worth $70 million at the time and approximately $12 billion today. While the heist caused significant disruption in the cryptocurrency world, nearly all the stolen funds have been recovered. The case underscores the evolving nature of cybercrime and highlights the importance of robust security measures in the cryptocurrency industry. As Lichtenstein and Morgan reflect on their actions, the lessons from the Bitfinex Hacker Bitcoin Heist serve as a cautionary tale about the risks of greed and the potential for redemption.
