A new proposal aims to expand Bitcoin’s capabilities without changing its core protocol.

Bitcoin is known for security and simplicity but lacks the smart contract capabilities of Ethereum. BitVM is a proposal that could change that. Introduced in 2023 by developer Robin Linus, BitVM uses off-chain computation and on-chain verification to enable complex smart contracts on Bitcoin without changing its core consensus rules.

This explainer breaks down how BitVM works, what applications it could enable, and why Bitcoin developers are debating whether the network should add this layer of programmability.

What BitVM is and why it matters

Bitcoin Virtual Machine, is a conceptual framework that enables complex computations and smart-contract logic to interact with Bitcoin.

Instead of executing the computation directly on the blockchain, BitVM allows the heavy processing to happen off-chain while the blockchain verifies the results.

According to the official BitVM documentation, the system allows developers to create Turing-complete contracts, meaning the network could theoretically verify any computational process without changing Bitcoin’s consensus rules.

BitVM aims to turn Bitcoin from a blockchain primarily used for value transfer into a platform capable of verifying complex digital agreements and applications.

“This enables more expressive smart contracts on Bitcoin.”

Robin Linus, developer and BitVM author, in a post following the whitepaper release.

How BitVM works

BitVM relies on a prover–verifier model, where two parties interact to validate a computation.

In this model, one participant, the prover claims that a certain computation produced a specific result. The second participant, the verifier can challenge that claim if they believe it is incorrect.

If a dispute occurs, the protocol launches a challenge-response process. The prover must reveal pieces of the computation step by step until the system determines whether the claim is valid.

If the claim is false, the verifier can present a fraud proof, and the system penalizes the prover.

The core idea is that:

  1. Computations happen off-chain to avoid congesting the Bitcoin network
  2. Only disputes or proofs appear on-chain
  3. The blockchain acts as a neutral judge

This approach allows Bitcoin to verify arbitrarily complex operations while maintaining low on-chain data usage.

BitVM also leverages the Taproot upgrade, introduced to Bitcoin in 2021, which allows more advanced scripting and data commitments in transactions.

Potential applications include:

  1. Layer-2 rollups and scaling solutions
  2. Cross-chain bridges for BTC
  3. Prediction markets and games
  4. Advanced financial contracts

The scaling debate inside the Bitcoin community

While BitVM has generated excitement, it has also sparked debate among developers and Bitcoin purists.

Some supporters argue that the real value of BitVM lies in scaling the Bitcoin network, not in replicating the full decentralized finance ecosystem seen on Ethereum.

According to proponents, BitVM could enable layer-2 networks that process transactions faster and cheaper while still relying on Bitcoin’s base layer for security.

What BitVM could mean for Bitcoin investors

BitVM represents a broader trend: Bitcoin evolving beyond a simple payment network into a programmable financial infrastructure.

If fully implemented, the technology could: enable decentralized applications secured by Bitcoin, allow new layer-2 networks to build on the Bitcoin ecosystem, and increase demand for BTC as collateral in decentralized systems.

Several development groups are already exploring implementations that build on BitVM’s framework, including projects focused on Bitcoin rollups and cross-chain infrastructure.

Its long-term impact will depend on whether developers can overcome technical limitations and convince the historically cautious Bitcoin community to adopt new layers of functionality.

BitVM has reopened a conversation many believed settled: whether Bitcoin can remain simple, and still evolve.
