Netflix announces crypto rom-com about couple racing to recover $35 million wallet

Netflix announced Thursday it will produce ‘One Last Attempt,’ a romantic comedy about a divorced couple racing to recover access to a $35 million cryptocurrency wallet they won years earlier but can no longer access.

The film follows the pair as they have 48 hours to remember the password before U.S. regulators allegedly seize the funds

Netflix Crypto Movie Turns Romance Into a 48-Hour Crypto Countdown

In the newly released synopsis, the Netflix crypto movie reveals that the couple originally won the crypto assets during a cruise competition.

Their relationship later collapsed, and with it, the memory of the wallet’s password. Years later, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission allegedly notifies them they have just 48 hours to reclaim the $35 million before the claim expires.

That ticking-clock premise injects urgency into the Netflix crypto movie, transforming a romantic reunion into a pressure-cooker chase against bureaucracy, regret, and human error.

Netflix Crypto Movie Mirrors Brutal Real-Life Lost Password Disasters

The Netflix crypto movie is not pure fiction. Its premise draws heavily from real-world crypto tragedies where fortunes vanished due to lost credentials.

One of the most infamous cases belongs to Stefan Thomas, a former Ripple chief technology officer, who lost access to an IronKey hard drive containing 7,002 Bitcoin mined in 2011.

At current valuations, the stash was once worth more than $640 million. Thomas revealed that the device self-destructs after 10 incorrect attempts—and he had already used eight.

Password loss is not just a technical issue—it’s a human one, Thomas previously said in public interviews, highlighting the emotional toll behind such failures.

Netflix Crypto Movie Echoes the $700M Bitcoin Hard Drive Nightmare

Another real-life inspiration for the Netflix crypto movie is James Howells, an IT worker from Wales who accidentally lost access to roughly 8,000 Bitcoin—now valued at over $700 million, according to Arkham Intelligence data.

In 2013, Howells’ wife mistakenly threw away the hard drive containing the private keys. Despite offering Newport City Council a share of the recovered Bitcoin, his repeated excavation requests were denied.

Howells once said the ordeal felt like watching a winning lottery ticket being buried forever, a sentiment that fits squarely into the emotional core of the Netflix crypto movie.

Netflix Crypto Movie Expands Streaming Giant’s Blockchain Storyline

The Netflix crypto movie adds to a growing catalog of blockchain-focused content. While early crypto films often leaned toward crime or scandal, Netflix has increasingly explored the human side of digital finance.

Notable entries include Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King, which examined the collapse of QuadrigaCX, and Biggest Heist Ever.

The 2024 documentary detailing the $4.5 billion Bitfinex Bitcoin laundering case involving Ilya “Dutch” Lichtenstein and Heather “Razzlekhan” Morgan.

As reported by Cryptopolitan, U.S. authorities arrested the couple in 2022, with the Department of Justice charging them with conspiracy to launder stolen funds.

Netflix Crypto Movie Signals Mainstream Shift for Digital Asset Stories

Industry observers say the Netflix crypto movie reflects how digital assets are moving from niche finance into mainstream culture.

Crypto stories resonate because they combine massive opportunity with irreversible mistakes, said a media analyst familiar with Netflix’s content strategy. That tension makes for compelling storytelling.

With One Last Attempt, Netflix appears to be betting that romance, regret, and a forgotten password are enough to hook both crypto natives and casual viewers alike.
