Lagos, Nigeria – Team Brazil pilots Timmy Hansen and Leva Millere-Hagin claimed victory at the inaugural E1 Lagos Grand Prix on Sunday, winning Africa’s first electric powerboat racing championship with 38 points after two days of competition on Lagos Lagoon.
The event, held October 4-5, marked Nigeria’s debut as the first African nation to host the UIM-sanctioned E1 World Championship, which features zero-emission RaceBird hydrofoils capable of reaching speeds exceeding 80 km/h.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu presented the trophy to the winning team on Sunday evening, congratulating Hansen and Millere-Hagin on their victory.
“Beyond the competition, the E1 Lagos GP represented our city’s commitment to innovation, clean energy, and sustainable development,” Sanwo-Olu said in a statement posted to his verified Facebook account. “It was inspiring to see Lagos take its place on the global stage as a city that embraces progress and possibility. I am proud of what we achieved this weekend and even more confident about the future we are building for Lagos.”
Hansen and Millere-Hagin’s flawless performance through qualifying heats, race-offs, and the final pushed Team Brazil to 89 championship points overall, moving them up the series standings.
Team Blue Rising finished second in the Lagos round, while Team Drogba Global Africa—owned by football legend Didier Drogba—claimed third place to enthusiastic support from local spectators.
Notable absences from the podium included Team Rafa, which finished fifth with 17 points, and Team Brady, owned by NFL legend Tom Brady. The results have tightened the championship race heading into the Miami finale scheduled for next month.
Event Significance

Thousands of spectators attended the race along the Victoria Island waterfront, with a dedicated Fan Zone featuring interactive exhibits demonstrating the RaceBird’s electric battery technology.
Governor Sanwo-Olu toured the event’s technical areas during the weekend, speaking with engineers about potential applications of electric propulsion technology for Lagos’ commercial fishing fleets and urban water transport systems.
The Lagos Grand Prix is part of the E1 World Championship’s 2025 season. The series aims to accelerate the adoption of electric marine technology while providing competitive racing entertainment.
According to social media analytics shared by event organizers, content tagged with #E1LagosGP generated significant engagement across platforms, with race footage and photos circulating widely among Nigerian and international audiences.
