SBI Ripple Asia and Japanese travel operator Tobu Top Tours signed a partnership agreement to launch a blockchain-based payment system for tourists and fans. The platform will issue location-restricted tokens on the XRP Ledger, with a planned rollout in the first half of 2026.
The platform is designed to tether spending power to digital engagement, creating localized payment networks for destinations, businesses, and cultural institutions. By integrating NFTs, the system will link transactions with digital souvenirs, loyalty perks, and new forms of fan engagement.
“This initiative marks a new phase in cashless payments, aligning digital tokens with real-world travel and fan experiences,” SBI Ripple Asia said in an announcement on 30th September.
Tourism and retail use cases
One of the main applications of the SBI Ripple Asia tokenized payment platform will be in tourism. Tokens could be geographically restricted to specific destinations, effectively serving as a digital currency for towns, shopping districts, or regional attractions.
SBI Ripple Asia said the approach would streamline transactions for travelers while ensuring that tourist spending remains within local economies. Pairing transactions with NFTs, such as digital souvenirs or vouchers, adds an engagement layer intended to boost return visits and long-term brand loyalty.
Tobu Top Tours, a major travel operator in Japan, will spearhead partner onboarding, marketing initiatives, and the development of affiliated merchant networks across the tourism industry.
Fan economies and cultural integration
The SBI Ripple Asia tokenized payment platform is also being positioned as a driver for fan economies. Sports teams, artists, and cultural institutions could issue branded tokens to be used for merchandise, event concessions, or exclusive experiences. NFTs tied to these tokens would serve as programmable membership cards, unlocking special rewards based on spending patterns.
By embedding tokenized value into fan interactions, the system aims to create sustainable revenue streams and deepen loyalty between fans and their favorite brands or institutions.
“This model transforms fandom into an interactive economy, where engagement is rewarded and monetized in new ways,” — Tobu Top Tours, in its project outline.
Disaster relief and regional aid applications
Beyond commerce and entertainment, the SBI Ripple Asia tokenized payment platform is being designed with humanitarian applications in mind. In the event of disasters, donations could be distributed as localized tokens, spendable only within affected regions.
This would ensure that aid directly benefits local businesses—restaurants, shops, and service providers—rather than leaking to national chains or online platforms. The companies emphasized that this targeted approach could improve transparency, efficiency, and grassroots recovery efforts.
Strategic outlook
With a planned launch in 2026, the SBI Ripple Asia tokenized payment platform underscores Japan’s growing role in blockchain-driven payments innovation. By leveraging the XRP Ledger and NFTs, the initiative aims to blend technology, culture, and finance into a cohesive ecosystem.
For policymakers, the project represents a test case in combining blockchain with localized economic development. For businesses, it offers a novel channel to capture spending and build loyalty. And for consumers, it promises a more engaging, seamless cashless experience.
By bridging tourism, retail, fan economies, and even disaster relief, the SBI Ripple Asia tokenized payment platform could reshape how digital assets function in everyday life across Japan.
