Viral X thread accuses ZachXBT of $5 million in undisclosed donations and hidden financial ties

A viral thread published on X on May 22 accused blockchain investigator ZachXBT of receiving approximately $5 million in donations from individuals who never appeared in his published investigations, raising conflict-of-interest questions about one of the crypto industry’s most influential independent researchers.

Mathew on X

The claims, published by an account identifying itself as “Matthew,” draw on court filings, public databases, and on-chain activity to argue that ZachXBT, whose real name has been reported in prior civil filings as Zachary Wolk, has operated with undisclosed financial ties while maintaining a public image of independence.

None of the allegations have been tested in court, and many remain contested. Still, the thread has prompted a broader debate about accountability in an industry where influential figures often operate outside traditional institutional oversight.

A viral thread and a shift in scrutiny

The discussion began with a sweeping set of posts that attempted to reconstruct Wolk’s background and professional history. The author of the thread described him as someone who had “exposed $500M+ in fraud,” while arguing that his own life had never been subject to equivalent investigation.

“He investigated everyone. Nobody ever investigated him,” the post read.

The thread pointed to a 2023 defamation lawsuit in a Texas federal court, where Wolk was allegedly named in public documents. From there, the author claimed to have traced educational and athletic records associated with the name Zachary Wolk, including references to competitive swimming records in Texas and school affiliations.

One post stated:“So, who is @zachxbt? A federal courthouse in Texas cracked it open. 2023.”

The material quickly spread across X, amplified by both supporters and critics of ZachXBT, and reignited longstanding tensions in the crypto sector over pseudonymous investigators who wield significant influence without formal oversight.

Financial ties and allegations of influence

As the thread progressed, its focus expanded beyond identity to financial relationships. The author alleged that Wolk had received approximately $5 million in donations from sources that were not publicly acknowledged in his investigative work.

“I found ~$5M of ‘donations’ from the people who never appear in his threads,” the post claimed.

The thread also referenced a community defense fund established during a prior defamation lawsuit involving Wolk, which reportedly raised more than $1 million from prominent figures in the crypto industry.

Among those named in the posts were high-profile exchange executives and investors, though the nature and intent of those contributions were not independently verified.

These claims have fueled questions about whether financial relationships within the industry could present conflicts of interest for investigators whose findings often move markets or trigger enforcement actions.

Another post in the thread cited a bounty posted by Wolk in 2026 offering payment for information on an individual in the crypto sector.

The author characterized the request as potentially unlawful, writing that “paying for someone’s passport details is illegal in the US,” though no legal determination has been made regarding the claim.

A figure known for exposing crypto crime

The scrutiny comes after years in which ZachXBT has been widely recognized as one of the most effective independent investigators in cryptocurrency. Working largely under a pseudonym, he has published detailed analyses of hacks, scams, and illicit fund flows, often identifying perpetrators faster than traditional enforcement agencies.

His work has been credited by industry researchers and cybersecurity analysts with helping trace hundreds of millions of dollars in stolen digital assets. In a 2024 profile, Joe McGill, a former analyst at TRM Labs, described him as part of “a new generation of investigator,” adding: “His success is completely tied to the success of his investigations.”

Others in the field have echoed similar views. Nick Bax, a fellow investigator, once described him as “a machine,” reflecting the scale and pace of his output in tracking illicit blockchain activity.

But the same visibility that made him influential has also made him a target for criticism. Over time, questions have emerged within parts of the crypto community about whether his work, while technically rigorous, is shaped by relationships, incentives, or selective attention.

Divided reactions and unresolved questions

Reactions to the recent allegations have been sharply divided. Some users on X framed the thread as a necessary act of transparency, arguing that influential investigators should themselves be subject to scrutiny.

Others warned that the publication of personal information and reconstructed identity details crossed ethical boundaries, particularly given the risks faced by individuals involved in exposing criminal networks.

One user wrote: “You’re putting a man’s life at risk. Is it worth it?”

Another countered: “This is all public information.”

A separate comment dismissed the controversy altogether, stating: “Snitching on one of the good guys is no bueno amigo.”

ZachXBT himself has not issued a detailed public response to the latest wave of claims circulating online. Much of the material driving the discussion remains rooted in social media posts and interpretations of public records rather than formal investigative findings or legal judgments.

What the episode has made clear, however, is that the role of blockchain investigators once largely unexamined outside niche crypto circles has now become part of the story itself. In an industry built on transparency and traceability, the question of who gets to investigate, and under what constraints, is no longer academic. It is increasingly central to how trust is assigned, contested, and maintained.
