A World Cup fan gets £10,000 back after using his life savings to take his grandfather to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, turning what began as a heartfelt family sacrifice into one of the tournament’s most unexpected stories.

Jacob Allmendinger, 21, from North Ferriby in East Yorkshire, received a surprise £10,000 payment from online crypto casino MetaWin while travelling across the United States with his 80-year-old grandfather, Geoff Golliker.

The gift came after Jacob’s story gained widespread attention following England’s World Cup campaign, allowing him to recover the savings he had originally spent on the once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Jacob had previously revealed that he spent around £10,000, money originally intended as a house deposit, to take his grandfather to the World Cup.

The pair travelled to New York for England’s opening match before following the national team across several host cities, including Atlanta and Mexico City, creating memories they described as priceless.

Their story resonated widely after Jacob explained that football had become a significant part of their relationship following the death of his grandmother.

The emotional account attracted international attention, eventually reaching online crypto casino MetaWin, which decided to reimburse the full amount Jacob had spent.

“I didn’t quite believe it, to be honest, until I looked at my bank and it was there. I was just in shock,” — Jacob Allmendinger.

The unexpected payment means the World Cup fan gets £10,000 back, transforming what had been a major financial sacrifice into a remarkable act of generosity.

The refund came shortly after England defeated DR Congo in Atlanta, with Jacob discovering that the full £10,000 had been transferred into his bank account.

While the company described the payment as a gift inspired by the family’s story, Jacob said the overwhelming public response had been equally meaningful.

“I think it just resonates with people. I’ve had people reach out who have lost their grandparents and how they wish they’d done something similar,” — Jacob Allmendinger.

The World Cup fan gets £10,000 back at a time when his story has continued to gain attention from football supporters following England’s progress through the tournament.

Grandfather reflects on World Cup experience

For Geoff Golliker, the journey has been about much more than football.

The pair, who have attended Hull City matches together for years, have become familiar faces among England supporters travelling across the United States.

“We’re getting recognised quite a bit. When we were in New York, a guy came up to us and said, ‘are you the guys travelling round?’ It was brilliant,” — Geoff Golliker.

Reflecting on England’s dramatic victory over Mexico, Jacob described it as a defining moment of the tournament.

“It was a once-in-a-generation game to watch,” — Jacob Allmendinger.

The World Cup fan gets £10,000 back story has since become one of the tournament’s feel-good moments, highlighting how a personal sacrifice for family created a global response.

Jacob said he plans to wait until returning home before deciding how to use the money.

Among the options he is considering are buying a house or saving the funds for future football tournaments, including UEFA Euro 2028.

“We could go to the European Championships [2028], I could buy a house, anything is possible. It’s just great to have options,” — Jacob Allmendinger.

Although the original trip was never intended to generate publicity, the World Cup fan gets £10,000 back story demonstrates how a deeply personal decision captured public attention and ultimately resulted in an unexpected financial gift.

For Jacob, however, the memories made with his grandfather remain the true reward, while the refund simply provides new opportunities after a journey he says was worth every penny.
