HSBC launches RedCoin, a Hong Kong dollar stablecoin, for retail payments at 100,000+ PayMe merchants

HSBC is bringing its Hong Kong dollar-backed digital currency to PayMe users, expanding the role of traditional banks in blockchain-based payments while raising new questions about adoption, competition and investor opportunities.

HSBC has launched RedCoin, a Hong Kong dollar-denominated stablecoin, through its PayMe app, giving retail users wallets for peer-to-peer transfers and payments at more than 100,000 merchants.

The rollout follows the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s April licensing of HSBC and positions the bank against Standard Chartered-backed Anchorpoint’s HKDAP.

RedCoin enters the retail payments market through PayMe

HSBC’s initial rollout focuses on making RedCoin accessible through an existing payment application rather than requiring customers to adopt an entirely new financial platform.

According to The Block’s report, users will be able to activate a stablecoin wallet within PayMe as access becomes available. The service is designed to support transfers between individuals and payments to more than 100,000 merchants using the platform.

Unlike volatile cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, RedCoin is designed to maintain a stable value relative to the Hong Kong dollar.

Maggie Ng, HSBC’s chief executive officer for Hong Kong, highlighted the broader financial shift behind the initiative.

“Money, assets and information are moving from traditional infrastructure to always-on, data-rich and increasingly programmable digital networks,” Ng said, according to The Block.

Her remarks reflect the bank’s view that digital assets and programmable financial infrastructure could reshape how money moves between consumers, businesses and institutions.

RedCoin strengthens HSBC’s blockchain strategy

The launch builds on HSBC’s existing involvement in tokenised assets and digital financial services. The bank has participated in initiatives led by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, including the e-HKD pilot and Project Ensemble, which explores the development of tokenised financial markets.

HSBC also offers digital bonds through its Orion platform, a gold token for retail customers and a tokenised deposit service designed for wholesale payments.

These products demonstrate that the institution’s blockchain ambitions extend beyond RedCoin and include several parts of the financial system.

John O’Neill, HSBC’s managing director for digital assets and currencies, indicated that the bank intends to expand its work in the sector, including through “wholesale corporate and institutional use cases.”

RedCoin is a bank-issued payment instrument, and its use should not be confused with ownership of HSBC shares or exposure to a publicly traded cryptocurrency token.

Hong Kong’s stablecoin rules shape the launch

RedCoin arrives as Hong Kong continues to develop its regulatory framework for fiat-referenced digital currencies. The city’s Stablecoins Ordinance took effect in August 2025, establishing a licensing regime for issuers operating within the relevant regulatory scope.

In April 2026, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority issued stablecoin licences to HSBC and Anchorpoint Financial, a joint venture involving Standard Chartered, HKT and Animoca Brands. Anchorpoint subsequently began a phased institutional rollout of its HKDAP stablecoin in August.

This regulatory structure is important because stablecoins depend heavily on trust in their reserves, redemption arrangements and the institutions responsible for issuing them.

A bank-backed product may benefit from an established financial brand, but customers still need clarity about how the currency is maintained, transferred and redeemed.

The launch of RedCoin also places Hong Kong’s banking sector in a more direct position to compete in digital payments.

What RedCoin means for cryptocurrency investors

The introduction of RedCoin highlights the growing overlap between traditional finance and blockchain technology.

For the wider crypto market, the development could support interest in regulated digital currencies, tokenised assets and payment infrastructure designed for commercial use.

RedCoin is designed to track the Hong Kong dollar, so it is not intended to generate the type of price appreciation sought by traders buying volatile tokens.

Its longer-term relevance will depend on whether consumers use it regularly, whether merchants find it more convenient than existing payment methods and whether HSBC expands its applications into corporate and institutional transactions.

Competition will also matter. Hong Kong already has other licensed stablecoin initiatives, and the success of any issuer will depend on distribution, ease of use, regulatory confidence and the strength of its supporting financial infrastructure.

RedCoin represents a concrete move by HSBC to bring a Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin into retail payments.

The launch offers a useful signal of how established banks are approaching blockchain adoption, but its broader commercial impact will become clearer as usage grows and additional services emerge.
