Jeju Island, renowned for its natural beauty and forward-thinking technology policies, is set to introduce NFT Tourism Cards to redefine the travel experience. According to local reports from Maeil Kyungjae, the initiative will offer tourists exclusive benefits such as travel subsidies, membership perks, and discounts at various attractions, all powered by a yet-to-be-revealed blockchain platform.

The move underscores Jeju’s commitment to leveraging blockchain and cryptocurrency technologies to enhance its status as a global web3 hub. The cards aim to attract tech-savvy tourists, particularly from Gen Z, who value unique digital experiences.

“The NFT Tourism Card represents a significant leap in combining blockchain technology with real-world applications to support tourism and stimulate the local economy,” said a Jeju provincial spokesperson during a press briefing.

A History of Blockchain Innovation

Jeju Island has a long-standing relationship with blockchain technology. In 2019, the island launched the Blockchain Hub City Development Research Service, focusing on exploring advanced blockchain applications. This initiative paved the way for integrating blockchain into various public services, including traffic management systems and VAT refunds for foreign tourists by 2021.

In 2020, Jeju took steps to become a cashless international city by introducing Tamna Jeon, a regional digital currency. By 2024, the island expanded its ambitions by announcing plans to integrate mainstream cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin into its economic ecosystem.

The new NFT Tourism Card will incorporate Tamna Jeon, enabling tourists to access travel subsidies while encouraging local spending. This integration showcases Jeju’s efforts to align blockchain technology with practical economic benefits.

Enhancing the Tourist Experience

The NFT Tourism Card is more than a ticket to discounts—it’s a digital diary. Tourists can document their experiences on the underlying blockchain, including visit locations, times, photos, and videos. This innovation aims to create a personalized and immutable record of travel memories, appealing to younger generations who prioritize digital integration in their lives.

“Gen Z values unique experiences and cutting-edge technology. The NFT Tourism Card is designed to cater to these preferences while showcasing the beauty of Jeju Island,” said Professor Lee Ji-won, a blockchain expert at Korea University.

Trial operations for the NFT Tourism Card will commence in the second half of 2025, with full-scale implementation planned shortly after.

South Korea’s Broader Blockchain Push

The launch of Jeju’s NFT Tourism Card aligns with South Korea’s broader adoption of blockchain and cryptocurrency technologies. The nation has invested heavily in blockchain to enhance both public and private sectors.

In early 2024, web3 firm Dispread partnered with Ethereum layer 2 Arbitrum to foster blockchain development in South Korea. Later that year, the Ministry of Science and ICT, along with the Korea Internet & Security Agency, committed 20 billion won (approximately $14.5 million) to blockchain support projects.

Busan, South Korea’s second-largest city, has also been at the forefront of blockchain innovation. In 2023, the city unveiled plans to develop a public blockchain network compatible with Ethereum and Cosmos, further solidifying the country’s status as a global blockchain leader.

These initiatives reflect South Korea’s ambition to position itself as a hub for blockchain innovation, with Jeju Island leading the charge in the tourism sector.

Economic and Cultural Implications

The NFT Tourism Card initiative is expected to have far-reaching implications for Jeju’s economy and culture. By offering blockchain-powered perks, the island aims to boost tourist spending and promote local businesses.

“Tourism is a vital part of Jeju’s economy. The NFT Tourism Card is a strategic step to modernize the industry and attract a new generation of travelers,” said Kim Eun-kyung, a tourism analyst at Hana Financial Group.

Moreover, the initiative aligns with Jeju’s vision to become a blockchain-centric region, combining economic growth with technological innovation.

Jeju Island’s upcoming NFT Tourism Card initiative represents a bold step in integrating blockchain technology with real-world applications. By offering exclusive benefits and creating digital travel diaries, the island aims to redefine tourism for the Gen Z audience.

As South Korea continues to invest in blockchain and cryptocurrency technologies, Jeju Island remains at the forefront, blending innovation with cultural heritage to enhance its appeal as a top global destination.
