Story Protocol is set to launch its highly anticipated mainnet on February 13, introducing the IP token to revolutionize intellectual property (IP) management in Web3. This move is expected to provide creators and rights holders with decentralized tools to protect, monetize, and program their digital assets on-chain.
Announced in a February 11 post on X, Story Protocol confirmed that its IP token will facilitate transactions, governance voting, and compensation for creators. The launch will commence with an initial staking period called “Singularity,” with rewards distribution beginning on March 2. The total supply of IP tokens is capped at 1 billion, with 58.4% allocated to the community to encourage broad participation and decentralized ownership.
“The mainnet launch marks a major milestone in bringing decentralized IP ownership to the world,” Story Protocol stated on its official forum.
Several major crypto exchanges have already confirmed support for the IP token listing, signaling strong market confidence. Platforms such as Coinbase, OKX, Bybit, KuCoin, Bithumb, and Bitget have all announced plans to list IP, allowing broader access for investors and users.
At its core, Story Protocol aims to create a programmable IP economy, where rights holders can register their content and set automated terms and payments for its usage.
Creators can register their work on-chain, license it automatically, and receive payments directly—without intermediaries.
Users who want to access or remix IP must pay fees using the native IP token, ensuring fair compensation.
Payments can be settled in cryptocurrency or converted into local currencies, making the system flexible for global users.
This decentralized model offers a transparent and efficient alternative to traditional IP management systems, which often rely on expensive legal frameworks and centralized gatekeepers.
The rise of AI-generated content has sparked debates about fair compensation for creators. Many artists, writers, and musicians worry about AI models remixing their work without proper attribution or payment.
Story Protocol founder Jason Zhao, a former Google DeepMind product manager, built the platform to tackle this issue. Speaking to Cointelegraph in December 2023, Zhao explained:
“You have these amazing creative tools,” referring to AI, “but then you have no sustainable business model if you are an IP holder, or a platform, or an individual creator.”
On February 7, Story Protocol emphasized the economic significance of IP in the AI age, stating:
“In the age of AI, IP will play a critical role in tokenizing the $61 trillion IP asset class.”
Story Protocol’s ecosystem is rapidly expanding, with over 50 decentralized applications (dApps) already utilizing its infrastructure.
One standout project is Magma, a collaborative digital art tool with 2.5 million users. Magma allows teams to create and co-edit artwork in real time, demonstrating how Story Protocol can facilitate seamless creative collaboration.
Beyond human creators, Story Protocol is also venturing into the agentic AI space. In December 2023, the platform introduced an experimental framework that allows AI agents to interact with IP on-chain.
This system, called ACTP/IP, enables AI bots to autonomously exchange, license, and monetize data without human intervention. The innovation could unlock new economic models for AI-driven creativity, making IP management more efficient and scalable.
Story Protocol’s potential hasn’t gone unnoticed by major investors. The project is backed by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Polychain Capital, Hashed, and Samsung Next—some of the most respected names in the crypto and Web3 space.
The company has successfully raised over $134 million across multiple funding rounds:
$29 million in May 2023 (Seed round)
$25 million in September 2023 (Series A)
$80 million in August 2024 (Series B)
This strong financial backing suggests long-term confidence in Story Protocol’s vision and its potential to reshape the $61 trillion IP industry.
