Ripple announced This week, a pilot program testing its RLUSD stablecoin for trade finance settlements within Singapore’s BLOOM Sandbox, a regulatory testing ground developed by the Monetary Authority of Singapore. In collaboration with supply chain finance firm Unloq, the pilot aims to automate cross-border trade settlements on the XRP Ledger—potentially cutting processing times from days to minutes.
The move signals Ripple’s aggressive expansion into Asia-Pacific trade finance and positions RLUSD, which has reached $1.5 billion in market capitalization since its December 2024 launch, as a institutional-grade alternative to traditional correspondent banking.
BLOOM Sandbox Pilot Targets Faster Settlement
The BLOOM Sandbox—short for Borderless, Liquid, Open, Online, Multi-currency—was launched in October 2025 by the Monetary Authority of Singapore to explore tokenized financial infrastructure.
Now, it’s becoming a proving ground for Ripple’s RLUSD ambitions.
At the core of the BLOOM Sandbox pilot is a simple but powerful idea: eliminate the friction in trade finance caused by manual processes.
Traditionally, cross-border trade relies on documentary credits, compliance checks, and correspondent banking systems that can take days—or even weeks—to complete.
Ripple and Unloq aim to change that. “The system can release payments automatically when predefined conditions are met, such as shipment verification,” the companies said in a joint statement, highlighting a key innovation being tested inside the BLOOM Sandbox.
BLOOM Sandbox Unlocks Automation in Trade Finance
The pilot running within the BLOOM-Sandbox integrates Unloq’s SC+ platform with Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin to create a unified execution layer on the XRP Ledger.
This setup combines:
- Trade obligations
- Settlement rules
- Financing workflows
All within a single programmable system.
The goal is clear: reduce human intervention and accelerate settlement cycles. By using RLUSD as the settlement asset, the BLOOM-Sandbox model could remove long-standing inefficiencies tied to manual verification and fragmented banking systems.
According to Ripple, the BLOOM-Sandbox test will also assess whether RLUSD can replace processes that have “slowed cross-border trade for decades.”
BLOOM Sandbox Could Expand Access to Trade Finance
Beyond speed, the BLOOM Sandbox pilot could reshape access to trade finance—especially for smaller businesses.
Current systems often favor large corporations with established banking relationships.
But Ripple and Unloq believe the BLOOM Sandbox model could level the playing field by improving transparency and reducing settlement risk.
Industry analysts say this could be a major breakthrough.
“Programmable payments and tokenized settlement layers are the next evolution of global finance,” said Brad Garlinghouse in previous remarks on Ripple’s broader strategy. “The ability to automate trust in transactions is a game-changer.”
BLOOM Sandbox Strengthens RLUSD Growth Strategy
The BLOOM Sandbox initiative comes as RLUSD gains traction in the stablecoin market.
Launched in December 2024, RLUSD has already grown to a market capitalization of დაახლოებით $1.5 billion, placing it among the leading stablecoins globally.
Ripple has positioned RLUSD as an institutional-grade asset designed for regulated financial environments—making the BLOOM Sandbox a natural testing ground.
The timing is also strategic. In December 2025, the Monetary Authority of Singapore granted expanded approval for Ripple’s regional entity, Ripple Markets APAC, enabling broader payment activities.
This regulatory backing strengthens Ripple’s credibility as it scales RLUSD through initiatives like the BLOOM-Sandbox.
BLOOM Sandbox Signals Ripple’s Asia Expansion Push
The BLOOM Sandbox pilot underscores Ripple’s growing footprint in Asia-Pacific markets, where demand for efficient cross-border payments continues to surge.
Ripple has also outlined plans to expand into Australia by acquiring BC Payments Australia Pty Ltd., aiming to secure an Australian Financial Services License.
This move aligns with its broader strategy to build regulated payment infrastructure across key financial hubs.
With the BLOOM Sandbox, Ripple is not just testing technology—it’s testing the future of global trade.
As the BLOOM-Sandbox pilot unfolds, the stakes are high. If successful, it could redefine how trade finance operates—replacing slow, paper-heavy systems with real-time, automated settlement powered by blockchain.
For now, all eyes are on Singapore. Because what happens inside the BLOOM Sandbox may soon ripple across the global financial system.
