DL News, the crypto newsroom linked to analytics platform DefiLlama, is shutting down at the end of May after a split from its sister company, collapsing search traffic, and AI-driven content aggregation combined to make the journalism business financially unviable, despite a research division that crossed seven figures in annual revenue last year.

In a public statement, Paige Aarhus detailed how the publication struggled with declining traffic, a fractured relationship with its sister company, and the broader collapse of traditional digital media economics driven by artificial intelligence and changing audience behavior.

Why the DL News closure happened

The DL News closure traces back to a combination of internal business tensions and structural shifts in media distribution. According to Aarhus, the publication was launched before several major industry disruptions, including Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter and the rapid expansion of AI-generated publishing tools.

“Unlike DefiLlama, however, DL News was never conceived as a public good,” Aarhus wrote. “It was supposed to become a real, profitable business.”

That profitability never fully materialized. While the publication built a loyal readership and developed a reputation for strong reporting, its growth was hindered after an internal dispute at DefiLlama in early 2023 effectively separated the two organizations operationally.

“For the next two years, communication between the organisations was minimal,” Aarhus said. “We remained tied to the DefiLlama name and identity, but without meaningful operational alignment or access to its much larger distribution.”

The loss of distribution became increasingly damaging as search traffic across crypto and technology journalism declined sharply. The DL News closure also highlights how AI-generated content has disrupted traditional media business models by weakening direct website traffic and increasing content aggregation.

“AI accelerated the collapse of search distribution and enabled endless waves of parasitic aggregation,” Aarhus wrote.

DL Research became profitable but could not save the newsroom

In response to weakening subscription prospects, the company launched DL Research in 2024 as a commercial research arm aimed at institutional crypto clients. That division quickly became the company’s strongest business unit.

According to Aarhus, revenue from the research operation grew by 270% in 2025 and surpassed seven figures in annual sales. The company also secured partnerships with several major firms in the crypto industry.

“That effort succeeded beyond what many thought possible,” Aarhus said. “In 2025, revenue grew 270% and we crossed seven figures in annual sales.”

Despite those gains, the success of DL Research was not enough to prevent the DL News closure. The newsroom itself continued to face declining visibility and mounting operational pressure.

“I remain deeply impressed by what our research team accomplished,” Aarhus added. “They built a serious revenue engine from scratch in one of the most competitive — some might say hostile — markets imaginable.”

Still, the core journalism business struggled to maintain audience scale in an increasingly fragmented media environment.

Layoffs preceded the DL News closure announcement

By mid-April 2026, executives reportedly recognized that the company could no longer continue operating sustainably. Layoffs began shortly afterward, and employees were informed on May 1 that the publication would shut down at the end of the month.

The DL News closure has sparked wider discussion within crypto media circles about whether independent newsrooms can survive without either massive audience scale or strong institutional backing.

Aarhus defended the newsroom’s editorial work, pointing to its investigations and willingness to confront influential industry figures.

“We broke major stories,” she wrote. “We showed up where others didn’t.”

She also described legal threats against the newsroom as evidence that its reporting had impact.

“I have never been prouder than when those threats arrived,” Aarhus said, “because they meant our journalists had done exactly what they were supposed to do.”

The statement framed the publication as an underdog operation that ultimately failed financially despite strong editorial output.

“We were scrappy underdogs, and like most underdogs, we did not win,” Aarhus wrote.

What the DL News closure means for crypto media

The DL News closure arrives during a difficult period for niche digital publishers, particularly in the cryptocurrency sector where advertising markets remain volatile and audience attention is increasingly concentrated on social platforms and AI-driven aggregators.

The collapse of traditional referral traffic has forced many crypto publications to pivot toward newsletters, research products, events, or institutional services to survive. Even then, sustainability remains uncertain.

The DL News closure also illustrates a growing divide between editorial influence and commercial viability. While the publication succeeded in building credibility and industry recognition, those strengths did not translate into long-term stability.

For former staff members, the announcement served partly as a farewell and partly as a public endorsement of the newsroom’s journalists.

“And if anyone reading this is hiring,” Aarhus concluded, “I can say without hesitation that you will not find a smarter, kinder, funnier, or more talented team than the people leaving DL News.”
