Six Malaysian nationals have been arrested for abducting a Chinese citizen and demanding a $1 million ransom in Tether (USDT). The incident, which occurred on July 11, highlights the growing trend of using cryptocurrency in criminal activities, particularly in cases of kidnapping for crypto ransom.
The accused, aged between 25 and 29, allegedly kidnapped the Chinese national at an exit point on the expressway connecting Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. The kidnappers then demanded a ransom of 4.44 million Malaysian ringgit, equivalent to $1 million in USDT, marking yet another instance of kidnapping for crypto ransom. This method of demanding payment in digital currency has become increasingly popular among criminals, who are drawn to the anonymity and ease of transfer that cryptocurrencies offer.
On August 15, the six suspects appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to the charges. However, Judge Amir Effendy, recognising the severity of the crime, denied bail. The case, centred around kidnapping for crypto ransom, will see its next hearing on October 8. The judge stated, “After considering all arguments and the nature of the charges, the court has decided that bail will not be granted.”
Investigations have revealed that the six suspects are part of a larger criminal syndicate involved in kidnapping for crypto ransom. Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed that the syndicate includes 18 members, making it a well-organised operation. “Our investigation shows that this gang is highly experienced in kidnapping for crypto ransom and has been involved in multiple kidnappings across the region,” Chief Khan said.
The use of USDT, in this case, is part of a broader trend where criminals are increasingly engaging in kidnapping for crypto ransom. If convicted, the six individuals involved in this kidnapping for crypto ransom face severe penalties under Malaysia’s Kidnapping Act. They could receive a minimum of 30 years in prison, with the possibility of up to 40 years, and face caning—a punishment reserved for the most serious crimes in the country.
Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir recently revealed that between 2018 and 2023, illegal crypto-mining operations led to the theft of $723 million worth of electricity.
“The theft of electricity by those who mine cryptocurrency occurs because they believe this activity cannot be detected due to the absence of meters on their premises,” Nasir explained during an event focused on destroying seized mining equipment.
