Tether has invested $20 million in Argentine digital bank Ualá, Bloomberg reported, confirming for the first time the size of its stake in Ualá’s $197 million funding round announced in March and led by Allianz X.

Tether is strengthening its footprint across Latin America after making a $20 million investment in Argentine digital banking platform Ualá, adding another strategic fintech partnership to its expanding regional portfolio.

The move reflects Tether’s growing ambition to back companies that bridge traditional financial services with blockchain technology in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital payments markets.

Cointelegraph reached out to Tether for confirmation of the reported investment, but the company had not responded before publication.

Tether doubles down on Latin America’s fintech growth

The Tether Ualá investment arrives as the issuer of the world’s largest stablecoin continues to expand beyond digital assets into broader financial infrastructure.

Founded in Argentina, Ualá has become one of Latin America’s leading digital banking platforms by offering mobile-based banking, payments, lending and investment services to millions of users across Argentina, Mexico and Colombia. The company has positioned itself as a major player in improving financial inclusion in a region where many consumers remain underserved by traditional banks.

The latest capital injection aligns with Tether’s broader strategy of supporting financial technology firms capable of accelerating digital payments and blockchain adoption throughout emerging markets.

Earlier this month, Tether announced another $20 million investment in Brazilian cryptocurrency exchange Mercado Bitcoin. That funding is intended to help expand the exchange’s onchain financial infrastructure across Latin America, reinforcing Tether’s commitment to the region’s digital economy.

The company has also been actively investing in Argentina’s crypto ecosystem. In April, Tether led a $14 million Series A financing round for Argentine cryptocurrency platform Belo, alongside investors including Titan Fund, The Venture City, Mindset Ventures and G2.

These deals illustrate that the Tether Ualá investment is not an isolated transaction but part of a broader regional investment strategy aimed at strengthening blockchain-powered financial services.

Stablecoin leader expands beyond digital assets

Although Tether is best known as the issuer of USDt (USDT), the world’s largest stablecoin by market capitalization, the company has increasingly diversified its investment activities over the past two years.

USDT remains the dominant stablecoin in the cryptocurrency market, with a market capitalization of approximately $184.4 billion, according to CoinMarketCap at the time of reporting. Its widespread adoption across exchanges, decentralized finance protocols and international payment networks has helped cement Tether’s position as one of the crypto industry’s most influential companies.

Tether Chief Executive Officer Paolo Ardoino has repeatedly emphasized the company’s ambition to promote financial inclusion through blockchain technology.

“Our mission is to provide financial freedom through accessible and efficient technologies,” Ardoino has said while discussing Tether’s long-term global expansion strategy.

The company’s recent investments suggest it is pursuing that vision by supporting businesses that combine traditional financial products with digital asset infrastructure.

Industry observers note that Latin America presents particularly attractive opportunities because of persistent inflation, currency volatility and growing demand for digital financial services. Stablecoins have become increasingly popular in countries such as Argentina, where consumers often seek alternatives to rapidly depreciating local currencies.

Against this backdrop, the Tether Ualá investment could strengthen collaboration between digital banking services and blockchain-powered payment solutions over the coming years.

Argentina remains a strategic market for crypto innovation

Argentina continues to rank among the world’s most active cryptocurrency markets, driven by high inflation and strong retail demand for dollar-denominated digital assets.

Digital banks like Ualá have gained significant traction by offering accessible financial products through mobile applications, helping users manage payments, savings and investments without relying solely on traditional banking institutions.

While Ualá has not announced any immediate plans to integrate stablecoin products following the Tether Ualá investment, the partnership highlights increasing convergence between fintech companies and blockchain firms seeking to modernize financial services.

The investment also reinforces growing confidence among institutional investors in Latin America’s fintech sector. Allianz X’s leadership of the $197 million funding round, combined with participation from Tether, signals continued interest in companies building scalable financial platforms across emerging markets.

Bloomberg reported that Tether’s contribution represented $20 million of the overall fundraising, providing greater clarity on the size of the stablecoin issuer’s commitment months after the funding round was first announced.

As competition intensifies across digital banking, crypto payments and tokenized finance, strategic partnerships like the Tether Ualá investment are expected to play an increasingly important role in expanding access to financial services across the region.

With recent investments spanning Mercado Bitcoin, Belo and now Ualá, Tether is steadily building a network of fintech and crypto companies that could accelerate blockchain adoption throughout Latin America. For both investors and the broader digital asset industry, the Tether Ualá investment represents another indication that stablecoin issuers are evolving from infrastructure providers into influential backers of the next generation of financial technology companies.
