Lake St. Louis, Missouri, police recovered $46,800 that an elderly resident was deceived into depositing into two cryptocurrency kiosks, Police Chief Christopher DiGiuseppi said. Officers intervened after responding to a report of large cash deposits at a local kiosk, and recovered the funds with help from the St. Charles County prosecuting attorney’s office.

Authorities say the case highlights the growing risks facing crypto scam victims, particularly seniors who are targeted by fraudsters impersonating trusted institutions.

Crypto scam victims rescued before losing more funds

According to the Lake St. Louis Police Department, officers were dispatched to a local gas station after receiving reports that an elderly resident was depositing significant amounts of cash into a cryptocurrency kiosk.

Investigators determined that the victim had been deceived by two individuals operating separate impersonation scams. One suspect allegedly posed as an employee of a technology company, while the other claimed to represent a federal agency.

The victim was instructed to withdraw $46,800 in cash from a bank before depositing the money into two separate cryptocurrency kiosks. Officers intervened before additional deposits could be made, limiting further financial losses for the crypto scam victims involved in the case.

Following the intervention, investigators obtained search warrants from the St. Charles County Circuit Court, enabling authorities to recover the stolen funds.

“Officers intervened before the victim lost any more money.” — Chris DiGiuseppi, Chief, Lake St. Louis Police Department

Police said the investigation remains active as detectives continue searching for those responsible.

How scammers target crypto scam victims

Authorities say the tactics used in this case mirror a growing pattern of fraud affecting crypto scam victims across the United States.

According to Chief DiGiuseppi, scammers frequently contact potential victims by phone, email, or text message while pretending to represent trusted organizations, including banks, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Social Security Administration, law enforcement agencies, or major technology companies such as Microsoft and Amazon.

The fraudsters typically convince victims that their bank account has been compromised, their money is at risk, or that they owe taxes or fines requiring immediate payment.

Victims are then instructed to withdraw cash from their bank accounts and deposit the money into a Bitcoin ATM or cryptocurrency kiosk. After completing the transaction, they are asked to provide the scammer with the QR code or cryptocurrency wallet address associated with the deposit, allowing the criminals to transfer the funds beyond the victim’s control.

“Scammers will call, email, or text prospective victims claiming to be their bank, the IRS, the Social Security Administration, law enforcement, or a company like Microsoft or Amazon.” — Chris DiGiuseppi, Chief, Lake St. Louis Police Department

Police noted that these social engineering tactics are specifically designed to create urgency and fear, making crypto scam victims believe immediate action is necessary.

Police issue warning to crypto scam victims

Chief DiGiuseppi emphasized that legitimate government agencies, financial institutions, and major businesses do not request payments through Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies.

“No law enforcement or government agency, bank, or legitimate business will ever ask you to pay using Bitcoin or other cryptocurrency.” — Chris DiGiuseppi, Chief, Lake St. Louis Police Department

Officials are urging crypto scam victims and anyone receiving similar requests to stop communicating with the caller, verify the claim independently through official contact channels, and notify local law enforcement before making any financial transaction.

Police also advise family members to discuss these scams with elderly relatives, who are often disproportionately targeted because fraudsters believe they may be less familiar with cryptocurrency payment systems.

Authorities say recognizing the warning signs early remains one of the most effective ways to prevent more crypto scam victims from losing substantial sums of money.

Community outreach aims to protect crypto scam victims

As part of ongoing public awareness efforts, Chief DiGiuseppi will host a community discussion on July 27, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at the Village Café in Lake St. Louis.

The event will focus on recent cryptocurrency fraud cases, common scam techniques, and practical steps residents can take to avoid becoming crypto scam victims. Law enforcement hopes increased public education will reduce the number of successful scams as criminals continue adapting their methods.

Officials stressed that anyone receiving unexpected requests involving cryptocurrency payments should pause before acting, independently verify the request, and report suspicious communications to the appropriate authorities.

The successful recovery of the stolen $46,800 demonstrates that rapid intervention by law enforcement can sometimes help crypto scam victims recover their funds. However, investigators caution that many cryptocurrency transactions remain difficult to reverse once completed, making prevention the strongest defense against increasingly sophisticated fraud operations.
