Switzerland’s digital asset ecosystem gained further institutional momentum on 23 July 2026 after BancaStato.

The cantonal bank of Ticino, announced the launch of regulated cryptocurrency trading and custody services through a partnership with Sygnum Bank and banking software provider Avaloq.

The new offering enables customers to buy, hold and sell Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and Solana directly from the bank’s existing online and mobile banking platforms, reflecting the growing convergence of traditional finance and digital assets.

The launch comes as regulated banks across Europe race to meet rising client demand for crypto services while operating within increasingly clear regulatory frameworks.

BancaStato brings crypto trading into everyday banking

The initiative allows BancaStato customers to access cryptocurrency markets without opening separate exchange accounts or moving funds to third-party platforms.

Instead, clients can execute trades directly through the bank’s familiar digital banking interface, while digital assets are secured using Sygnum’s institutional-grade custody infrastructure.

The rollout initially supports four major cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), and Solana (SOL).

According to Sygnum, the integration was completed through its API connected to Avaloq’s banking platform, eliminating the need for a separate order management system and reducing operational complexity for the bank.

Fritz Jost, Chief B2B Officer at Sygnum, described the partnership as another milestone in institutional crypto adoption.

“We are proud to welcome BancaStato to our fast-growing B2B network, which illustrates the growing demand for Sygnum’s regulated, API-driven digital asset services that integrate directly into existing core banking systems.” Fritz Jost, Chief B2B Officer, Sygnum

Institutional crypto adoption continues to accelerate

The latest partnership reflects a broader trend that has been developing across Switzerland over the past several years.

Rather than competing directly with cryptocurrency exchanges, established financial institutions are increasingly embedding regulated crypto services into their existing banking infrastructure.

Instead of relying solely on native crypto platforms, institutional investors and retail banking customers can now gain exposure through regulated financial institutions that already manage traditional investment portfolios.

BancaStato becomes the latest financial institution to join Sygnum’s B2B banking network, which now supports more than 25 banks and financial institutions.

The announcement also follows Sygnum Europe’s recent approval as a Crypto-Asset Service Provider (CASP) under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation.

Dr. Curzio De Gottardi, Head of Products and Services Division and Vice-Chairman of BancaStato’s Executive Board, said the partnership strengthens the bank’s long-term digital strategy.

Switzerland strengthens its position as a crypto banking hub

The development reinforces Switzerland’s reputation as one of the world’s most crypto-friendly banking jurisdictions.

Over the past two years, multiple Swiss financial institutions have introduced regulated cryptocurrency trading and custody, while several banking groups have begun exploring stablecoins and tokenized financial products.

Earlier in 2026, six major Swiss banks including UBS, PostFinance, Sygnum, Raiffeisen, Zürcher Kantonalbank and BCV—launched a sandbox initiative to explore applications for a regulated Swiss franc-backed stablecoin.

That project aims to strengthen the country’s digital payments infrastructure while encouraging broader blockchain adoption within the banking sector.

Christian Haux, Managing Director for Switzerland and Liechtenstein at Avaloq, said the latest launch demonstrates how banks can respond to changing investor expectations without abandoning their existing infrastructure.

What the launch means for crypto investors

For crypto investors, the significance extends beyond another bank listing digital assets.

The move illustrates how regulated financial institutions are increasingly treating cryptocurrencies as a standard component of wealth management rather than a niche investment category.

As more banks integrate digital assets directly into their core banking systems, barriers to entry continue to decline for mainstream investors seeking regulated exposure to crypto markets.

The combination of regulated custody, familiar banking interfaces and compliance with evolving European crypto regulations could encourage additional regional banks to adopt similar models.

If this trend continues, competition among traditional banks may shift from whether to offer crypto services to how seamlessly those services integrate with conventional investment products.

For the broader digital asset industry, BancaStato’s launch serves as another indication that institutional adoption is moving beyond pilot programs toward permanent banking infrastructure.
