Bitcoin.com wallet adds first CBUAE-registered dollar stablecoin

Bitcoin.com is bringing a UAE-regulated dollar-backed stablecoin to its self-custodial wallet, potentially giving millions of users another regulated option for holding and transferring digital dollars.

Bitcoin.com is adding USDU, the first US dollar stablecoin registered with the Central Bank of the UAE, to its self-custodial wallet, giving users direct access to a regulated, monthly-attested token through a new partnership with issuer Universal Digital Intl. Limited.

The move connects Bitcoin.com’s large global wallet user base with a stablecoin designed specifically around the United Arab Emirates’ regulated digital-asset framework. Universal launched USDU in January 2026 as the first U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin registered by the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) as a Foreign Payment Token under the Payment Token Services Regulation.

For Bitcoin.com, the integration is about more than simply adding another dollar-pegged asset. The company plans to support USDU payments for designated services and eventually enable payments between users and merchants across its ecosystem. Swapping and fiat buy-and-sell functionality are also planned, although those features will depend on third-party providers supporting the token and on regulatory requirements in individual jurisdictions.

The initial rollout therefore puts holding and transfers first, while broader functionality is expected to develop as the surrounding infrastructure matures.

USDU combines self-custody with reserve transparency

The central selling point behind the USDU stablecoin is its combination of regulated issuance, dollar reserves and blockchain-based settlement.

Universal says every USDU is backed 1:1 by liquid U.S. dollar reserves held with regulated UAE banking partners. Its current reserve banking relationships include Emirates NBD and Mashreq, while Mbank serves as a strategic corporate banking partner. Universal also says the reserves undergo independent monthly attestations, with reports made available for review.

That reserve structure is particularly relevant in a stablecoin market where questions surrounding collateral quality, liquidity and transparency have become central to institutional adoption.

Universal Digital Intl. is regulated by the Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA) of Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) to issue Fiat-Referenced Tokens to professional clients. The firm’s FSRA permission, effective from September 2025, specifically covers the issuance of a Fiat-Referenced Token and carries a restriction against dealing with retail clients under the relevant FSRA rules.

At the same time, the CBUAE registration gives USDU a separate status under the UAE’s payment-token regime. The distinction matters: USDU is permitted for settlement connected with digital assets and digital-asset derivatives under the UAE framework, but it is not a general-purpose replacement for the UAE dirham in mainland domestic payments.

Bitcoin.com CEO Corbin Fraser highlighted the importance of verifiable reserves when discussing the integration.

“People shouldn’t need to be forensic accountants to know what backs the stablecoin they hold,” Fraser said, according to Bitcoin.com’s announcement.

The wallet provider also plans to publish educational material explaining fiat-backed stablecoins, reserve attestations and regulated issuance through its Learn-to-Earn content and stablecoin education initiatives.

UAE regulation gives USDU a defined role

The USDU stablecoin arrives as the UAE continues building a regulatory framework aimed at bringing digital-asset activity closer to traditional financial standards.

ADGM’s FSRA finalized its regulatory framework for Fiat-Referenced Tokens in late 2025, with the updated rules taking effect in January 2026. The framework includes requirements around reserve assets, governance and independent assurance mechanisms.

Universal’s own regulatory structure spans both ADGM and the CBUAE. Under its ADGM authorization, the company can issue a Fiat-Referenced Token to professional clients. Separately, it is registered with the CBUAE as a Foreign Payment Token issuer.

That dual regulatory positioning has become a key part of Universal’s pitch to institutional users.

“USDU sets a new benchmark for regulated digital value,” Universal Senior Executive Officer Juha Viitala said when the token launched. He argued that its registration with the UAE central bank and backing by major UAE banking institutions could provide greater clarity for institutions entering regulated digital-asset markets.

The token is also built for interoperability. Universal identifies it as an ERC-20 asset on Ethereum and says its smart contract has undergone an independent audit by CertiK. Aquanow, meanwhile, serves as Universal’s distribution and infrastructure partner and operates under Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority framework.

USDU moves toward a broader UAE dollar-to-dirham ecosystem

The Bitcoin.com deal is the latest step in the expansion of the USDU stablecoin beyond its initial launch.

In May 2026, Universal announced a collaboration with AE Coin to develop a regulated conversion framework connecting USDU with the UAE dirham-backed stablecoin. The initiative, supported by Mbank, is designed to facilitate conversion between dollar- and dirham-denominated payment tokens for institutional settlement, treasury management and liquidity operations.

That development highlights a broader strategy: rather than positioning a dollar stablecoin as a substitute for the dirham in everyday domestic payments, Universal is building infrastructure in which dollar and dirham-denominated tokens can operate alongside one another within defined regulatory boundaries.

For Bitcoin.com users, the immediate benefit is simpler. The USDU stablecoin will provide another dollar-denominated asset that can be held and transferred directly from a self-custodial wallet.

Bitcoin.com said USDU users will be able to receive the token from supported jurisdictions for activities such as saving, invoicing and transferring funds between wallets or applications, subject to local regulations.

The next phase could be more significant. Bitcoin.com plans to introduce USDU payments and eventually expand into swaps and fiat purchases and sales once supporting providers are integrated.

That makes the partnership less about a token listing and more about building a regulated stablecoin payment rail inside a self-custodial crypto ecosystem. As the UAE pushes deeper into regulated digital-asset infrastructure, the USDU stablecoin is gaining another distribution channel — and Bitcoin.com is betting that regulated dollar liquidity can become a practical part of everyday crypto activity.
