Nikita Bier says X’s crypto trade buttons are coming soon

The planned feature could turn X from a place where traders discover tokens into a platform where they can act on those opportunities without leaving their timelines.

Former X head of product Nikita Bier said Tuesday that the platform’s long-awaited crypto trading buttons are coming soon, disclosing the update while rejecting accusations that he had suppressed Crypto Twitter during his tenure.

“What are you talking about? I literally built Cashtags, allowing people to add Solana and Ethereum charts directly into posts—with trade buttons coming soon,” Bier wrote in a post on X. He added that users can already paste contract addresses for newly launched tokens into posts.

The remarks put X trade functionality back in the spotlight after months of speculation about how far X intends to push its financial tools.

Cashtags, launched in April for iPhone users in the United States and Canada, allow users to find market information and view financial data without leaving the platform. The Block reported that the feature supports both stocks and cryptocurrencies, with contract addresses also usable to identify crypto assets.

The next logical step is execution. If X adds a direct trading button beside a token chart, users could potentially move from discovering an asset to placing a trade without switching to another application.

X trade could eliminate a major friction point for crypto traders

For crypto traders, the difference between seeing a token and buying it is often several steps.

A user may discover a newly launched token through an X post, verify its contract address, open a wallet or decentralized exchange, search for the asset and then execute a transaction. Each additional step creates friction—and creates another opportunity for a trader to abandon the transaction.

X trade buttons could compress that process into the timeline itself.

That would be particularly significant for newly minted tokens, where contract addresses are often more reliable than token names. Scam projects can copy the names, logos and branding of established cryptocurrencies, making the blockchain address an important verification tool before a purchase.

Bier specifically highlighted that capability in his response, saying users can already paste contract addresses for newly minted tokens into X. The platform’s existing Cashtags infrastructure therefore provides a foundation for a more direct trading experience.

The company has already demonstrated that financial information can generate substantial engagement. According to BeInCrypto, the initial Cashtags pilot was estimated to have generated roughly $1 billion in volume within its first 48 hours, although that figure represents activity associated with the feature rather than proof that X itself executed those trades.

Still, a X trade button would represent a considerably bigger ambition. It would move X beyond being a financial-information layer and closer to functioning as a trading interface.

Bier rejects shadowban claims as crypto market rebounds

Bier’s comments also reopened an old argument surrounding X and crypto visibility.

The former product chief was responding to claims that Crypto Twitter had been deliberately throttled under his leadership. A shadowban generally refers to the alleged reduction of an account’s visibility without an obvious notification or conventional account suspension.

Bier dismissed the accusation while emphasizing that X had expanded its crypto functionality during his time overseeing product.

His timing is notable. Bitcoin and other major crypto assets have rallied sharply in August, while traders have focused heavily on macroeconomic developments in Washington.

But Bier does not believe X deserves credit for the broader market move.

Instead, he pointed to the U.S. Treasury’s decision to increase purchases of longer-dated government debt. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on August 19 that the size of Treasury buyback operations for 10- to 30-year securities would be at least doubled, from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation. The plan is intended in part to support liquidity in the Treasury market.

The announcement had an immediate effect across financial markets. Bitcoin climbed above $70,000 after the Treasury intervention, while gold also rallied as investors weighed concerns about the dollar, inflation and U.S. debt. Reuters reported that Bitcoin later moved above $80,000 on August 25, extending its recent gains.

Stephen Coltman, head of macro at 21Shares, described the August 19 Treasury announcement as the “main catalyst” for Bitcoin’s surge, according to MarketWatch.

That backdrop supports Bier’s argument that the crypto rally cannot simply be attributed to changes at X.

X trade buttons still face a major launch question

Despite Bier’s disclosure, there is no confirmed launch date for the new trading functionality.

That leaves the rollout of X trade buttons as one of the platform’s biggest unanswered crypto questions. X has already built several components required for a more integrated trading experience, including token discovery, price charts and contract-address recognition. But turning those tools into an actual order-execution system raises additional questions about partners, liquidity, custody, regional availability and regulatory compliance.

The company will also need to determine whether trading will be available across a broad range of cryptocurrencies or initially limited to selected assets and jurisdictions.

Bier is no longer X’s head of product. He stepped down earlier this month and said he would continue advising the company. TechCrunch reported that Bier had taken the product leadership role in July 2025 and oversaw the launch of numerous products during his tenure.

That makes the timing of the proposed X trade buttons particularly interesting. The feature Bier helped develop could now become one of the most consequential products shipped after his departure from day-to-day product leadership.

For crypto traders, the appeal is straightforward: discover a token, inspect its market data, verify its contract and potentially trade it—all without leaving X.

Whether that vision becomes a genuine trading marketplace or simply another financial-data feature will depend on how the company executes the rollout. For now, Bier’s message is clear: the trading button is coming, but X has yet to say exactly when.
