Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan has set off speculation about a possible POLY token after teasing “a little something” ahead of Token2049 in Singapore.
The tease came days after the prediction market earned nearly $10 million in a weekend, almost four times Hyperliquid’s $2.6 million. Neither Coplan nor Polymarket has confirmed a token or airdrop.
Token2049 fuels speculation over Polymarket token
The speculation began after Coplan responded to an analysis comparing Polymarket’s weekend revenue with that of Hyperliquid.
The analysis highlighted that Polymarket had generated nearly $10 million in revenue, compared with approximately $2.6 million for Hyperliquid. It also pointed to Hyperliquid’s HYPE token, describing it as an “$86 billion token” based on its fully diluted valuation.
Coplan’s response that he had “a little something to say” — was enough to trigger speculation across X that Polymarket could be preparing to announce its own cryptocurrency.
One user responded: “Polymarket CEO teasing the Polymarket token? No f*cking way. $POLY.”
The possibility of a token has not been confirmed by Polymarket or Coplan. However, the timing of the comments has drawn attention because Coplan is scheduled to appear at Token2049 in Singapore, where announcements from major cryptocurrency and blockchain companies often attract significant industry attention.
Some users have already suggested “POLY” as a possible ticker for a Polymarket token, while others joked about the possibility of Polymarket launching a token before the long-awaited release of GTA 6.
Finance blogger ZeroHedge also weighed in, saying: “Time for a crypto token that actually transcends crypto and goes mainstream.”
Token2049 brings Coplan and Balaji together
The timing of the speculation is particularly notable because Token2049 will take place in Singapore on October 7 and 8.
Coplan is scheduled to speak at the event alongside Balaji Srinivasan, the former Coinbase executive and founder of the Network State. The appearance gives Coplan a prominent public platform at a major industry gathering, although there has been no official confirmation that a token announcement is planned.
Token2049 normally takes place twice a year, with events held in major cryptocurrency hubs. However, the Dubai edition that had been scheduled for April was cancelled and pushed back by a year because of the ongoing US-Iran war.
That cancellation means the Singapore gathering is receiving additional attention from the crypto industry, with investors, developers and market participants expected to watch announcements and appearances closely.
For Polymarket, a token launch would represent a significant development for a platform that has grown beyond traditional cryptocurrency trading into prediction markets covering politics, finance, global events and other areas.
Still, the current discussion remains speculation. Neither Coplan nor Polymarket has announced plans for a token, an airdrop or a ticker called POLY.
Polymarket faces regulatory scrutiny
The token speculation comes as Polymarket continues to face scrutiny over some of the markets available on its platform.
In the UK, members of Parliament have called for authorities to intervene after Polymarket offered contracts on whether HSBC and Lloyds would fail. The development attracted attention despite Polymarket not being available to users in the country.
The controversy highlights the regulatory questions surrounding prediction markets as platforms increasingly offer contracts tied to events that can have financial and social consequences.
Polymarket has previously attracted significant attention for allowing users to trade on the outcomes of political elections, geopolitical developments and other real-world events.
The platform’s growing prominence has also brought greater scrutiny from regulators and lawmakers, particularly around the boundary between prediction markets, financial products and gambling.
Token2049 arrives amid wider prediction market probe
The speculation surrounding Token2049 also comes as US authorities examine possible insider trading involving prediction markets.
A US insider trading investigation was expanded last week to include prediction markets offered by Hyperliquid, Crypto.com and Aristotle Exchange.
The investigation is being overseen by Republican House Oversight Committee member James Comer and follows an earlier insider trading probe involving Kalshi and Polymarket in May.
The wider investigation adds another layer of scrutiny to an industry that has expanded rapidly as prediction markets gain popularity among cryptocurrency users and traditional financial market participants.
For now, however, there is no confirmed Polymarket token announcement. Coplan’s comments have only fueled expectations that something could be revealed when he takes the stage at Token2049.
Whether that “little something” turns out to be a token, an airdrop or something unrelated to Polymarket’s cryptocurrency ambitions remains unknown. The market will likely have to wait until the Singapore event begins for a clearer answer.
