SBI and KB Kookmin Card explore stablecoin payments for Japanese tourists in South Korea, with AI agent identity checks

SBI Holdings and South Korea’s KB Kookmin Card are exploring stablecoin payments for Japanese tourists visiting South Korea, alongside an AI identity verification system designed to confirm that software agents are authorised to spend on a customer’s behalf. No launch date, supported stablecoins or participating merchants have been confirmed.

SBI and KB Kookmin target cross-border crypto payments

Japan’s SBI Holdings and South Korea’s KB Kookmin Card are exploring ways to make cryptocurrency payments more accessible to Japanese tourists visiting South Korea, according to a report published on October 13, 2026.

The reported initiative also involves artificial intelligence (AI) identity verification, highlighting how financial institutions are examining new technologies to improve the security and convenience of digital transactions.

The proposed work comes as traditional financial companies expand their interest in blockchain-based payments and digital assets.

The development offers another example of established financial businesses investigating the practical use of stablecoins. However, the reported plans remain exploratory, and the details of any eventual consumer service have not been fully established.

A potential stablecoin payment service could allow eligible Japanese visitors to pay participating South Korean merchants using digital assets designed to maintain a relatively stable value against a reference currency.

Such an arrangement could reduce some of the friction associated with international payments, although the actual benefits would depend on the fees, conversion rates, settlement arrangements and regulatory requirements of the eventual product.

AI identity verification could strengthen digital payments

Alongside the exploration of crypto payments, the reported initiative focuses on verifying identities associated with AI agents. These systems can perform tasks on behalf of users, potentially including financial transactions, but their use raises questions about authorization, accountability and fraud prevention.

The reported four-party arrangement involves KB Kookmin Card, SBI Holdings, South Korean cybersecurity company Everspin and SBI Everspin, a joint venture associated with the two groups. The companies are examining how identity checks and transaction permissions could help establish a safer foundation for digital financial services.

One important issue is ensuring that an AI agent has permission to act for a customer. A reliable verification framework would need to distinguish an authorized transaction from an attempt to impersonate a user or exceed previously granted spending limits.

The same considerations would apply to any stablecoin payment service involving automated transactions. Businesses would need to determine how customers provide consent, how authorization is checked and how disputed transactions are handled.

According to the reported description of the initiative, a company representative said the partners would work together to provide customers in Japan and South Korea with “convenient and secure digital payment experiences.”

What stablecoin payment adoption could mean for crypto investors

The growing interest in stablecoin payment systems reflects a broader effort to connect blockchain-based assets with existing financial infrastructure.

Stablecoins can represent fiat-linked value on digital networks, allowing transfers to take place without requiring users to send conventional bank deposits directly through every stage of a transaction.

For financial institutions, the opportunity may involve faster settlement, new payment services and closer integration between digital assets and established customer platforms.

However, the investment implications require a distinction between adoption of stablecoins and appreciation in the value of other cryptocurrencies.

A payment system can become more widely used without necessarily creating equivalent demand for a particular blockchain’s native token.

The financial impact will depend on the selected network, transaction fees, settlement model and whether the service generates meaningful economic activity for the companies and infrastructure providers involved.

Investors should therefore look beyond partnership announcements when assessing the sector. Commercial deployment, transaction volumes, merchant participation, customer adoption and recurring revenue would provide stronger evidence of business progress than an exploratory memorandum alone.

Commercial launch remains unconfirmed

Despite the potential, the reported initiative has not established when a stablecoin payment service might become available to tourists. Details concerning the supported assets, blockchain networks, merchant coverage, transaction costs and exchange-rate arrangements remain unconfirmed.

The companies would also need to determine how the proposed service would handle refunds, cancellations, payment disputes and security incidents. These operational questions can be just as important as the underlying blockchain technology when a payment product is intended for ordinary consumers.

The reported plans should also be distinguished from other stablecoin experiments involving SBI Group. SBI DigiTrust has separately been reported to be testing QR-code-based payments for Japanese travelers in South Korea with NICE Information & Telecommunication and blockchain infrastructure firm DSRV.

The development is worth monitoring because it illustrates how established financial institutions are investigating practical applications for digital assets.

If the companies eventually introduce a working service, its adoption rate, regulatory structure and economic model will help determine whether the initiative can contribute meaningfully to the expansion of stablecoin-based payments across Asia.
