Robinhood plans AI trading accounts for retail investors, but CEO Vlad Tenev warns everyone using the same models will struggle to win

Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev says AI-powered trading agents could reshape retail investing, while arguing that wider access to private markets could help more people benefit from the artificial intelligence boom.

Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev says AI agents will trade in separate accounts under a new initiative called Robinhood Agents, but warns that access to the same AI models won’t give retail investors an edge.

Speaking to Alex Heath’s Sources newsletter and podcast on October 13, Tenev also floated giving customers exchange-proximity infrastructure, though the company has not announced a launch date for either product.

Robinhood’s AI trading accounts target a new era of retail investing

Robinhood wants to make AI agents an increasingly important part of its investing platform, allowing users to deploy automated systems capable of handling tasks that would otherwise require considerable time, technical knowledge or trading experience.

Tenev expects AI agents to account for a growing share of individual investors’ trading activity as the technology becomes more integrated into financial services.

The company’s approach reflects a broader shift towards AI systems that can do more than answer questions or generate information. Rather than simply providing recommendations, trading agents could help users execute strategies and manage decisions across different financial instruments.

However, access to AI alone may not guarantee better investment results.

Tenev argued that investors could struggle to distinguish themselves if everyone relies on the same models and applies them in similar ways. In his view, the advantage will come from how individuals configure their systems, the information they provide and the tools they connect.

“You’ll have to figure out how to be different,” Tenev said.

That distinction could become important as AI trading accounts become more widely available. If large numbers of retail investors use similar automated strategies, the resulting competition could make it harder for any individual approach to maintain an advantage.

Robinhood believes AI agents could help users manage a level of complexity that would otherwise overwhelm an individual trader. Yet the company’s vision also raises questions about how much authority customers should give automated systems when real money is at stake.

One of the issues discussed in the interview was Robinhood’s decision to keep agents in separate accounts. The arrangement is relevant to the question of how users should manage the relationship between their own investment decisions and the actions taken by AI systems.

The source did not provide detailed technical specifications for the account structure or establish when the broader initiative would become available to customers.

AI trading accounts could still leave investors searching for an edge

The growing availability of powerful AI models does not necessarily mean that all investors will achieve similar results.

Tenev believes differentiation will depend on the data investors provide to their agents, the tools those agents can access and the strategies they use to combine different asset classes.

For example, an investor’s approach could depend on how an AI system processes information, connects to other tools and evaluates opportunities across multiple markets. The resulting strategy, rather than access to a model alone, could determine whether the investor gains an advantage.

This argument challenges the assumption that widely available AI tools will automatically level the playing field between retail traders and established financial institutions.

Professional trading firms operate with specialised infrastructure, technical expertise and systems designed to process orders quickly. Individual investors may gain access to sophisticated models without receiving all the other resources that shape trading performance.

Tenev raised the possibility of giving Robinhood customers access to another advantage traditionally associated with sophisticated trading firms: physical proximity to an exchange’s matching engine.

In electronic markets, the time taken for an order to reach an exchange and be processed can matter to certain trading strategies. Firms that place their systems close to exchange infrastructure can reduce communication delays, potentially supporting strategies that depend on speed.

Robinhood does not currently offer the proposed capability, and Tenev did not provide a timeline for its introduction. He nevertheless indicated that the company wants to explore ways to make this type of infrastructure more accessible without requiring customers to understand data centres or complex networking systems.

“Can we democratize that?” Tenev asked.

The proposal suggests that Robinhood’s ambitions extend beyond AI trading accounts. The company is also considering how it might reduce infrastructure barriers that prevent ordinary investors from accessing some of the tools used by professional market participants.

However, access to faster execution does not guarantee profitable trades. Market conditions, transaction costs, strategy design and risk management would remain important considerations for investors using automated systems.

Robinhood links AI ownership to its private-market investment push

Tenev’s argument for expanding access to investment opportunities goes beyond trading automation.

During the interview, he suggested that some of the public backlash against artificial intelligence stems from the perception that its financial benefits are concentrated among a relatively small group of investors and technology companies.

The rapid expansion of AI infrastructure has created demand for data centres and other resource-intensive facilities. While these developments support the industry’s growth, Tenev argued that people who do not own shares in the companies involved may see few direct financial benefits from the expansion.

He contrasted this with cryptocurrency, where individuals had opportunities to invest in an emerging industry and potentially become financially invested in its success.

In his view, ownership can influence public attitudes towards technological change. People who benefit from an industry’s growth may be more inclined to support its development, while those who see costs without receiving a share of the gains may become more critical.

Robinhood Ventures is part of the company’s effort to address this perceived gap by expanding access to private-company investments.

Private markets have traditionally been less accessible to ordinary investors than public stock markets, where shares can be bought and sold through brokerage accounts. Access to private companies can depend on eligibility requirements, investment minimums and the availability of particular offerings.

Robinhood’s broader ambition is to give more individuals opportunities to invest in companies before they enter public markets.

Tenev also discussed the possibility of upcoming AI-related initial public offerings, which could create new investment opportunities as companies seek to raise capital from public-market investors.

However, broader access to private markets does not eliminate investment risks. Private-company shares can be difficult to value and sell, while investors may have limited information compared with what publicly listed companies disclose.

The interview did not establish specific investment terms or guarantee that Robinhood users would receive access to particular AI companies.

AI trading accounts raise questions about access and control

Robinhood’s plans sit at the intersection of two questions shaping the future of financial services: how much responsibility investors should delegate to AI and who should benefit financially from the technology’s expansion.

AI trading accounts could make sophisticated financial tools more accessible, but they also introduce questions about oversight, accountability and the consequences of automated decisions.

Keeping agents in separate accounts is one element of Robinhood’s approach, although the interview did not explain the full safeguards governing their operations. Investors will still need to understand what their agents can do, which decisions require approval and how potential losses are managed.

Tenev also criticised the concentration of access to powerful AI systems, arguing that their benefits should not be restricted to a small group of companies or users.

His position reflects a wider debate about whether the economic gains associated with artificial intelligence will be broadly distributed or concentrated among those who own the underlying technology and infrastructure.

For Robinhood, expanding access to financial tools and investment opportunities could help connect ordinary users to that economic shift. Its AI initiative focuses on automating parts of the trading process, while its private-market ambitions target the ownership gap Tenev believes contributes to public frustration.

The company’s plans nevertheless face practical challenges. Automated trading must operate within appropriate risk controls, and broader access to private investments does not ensure that individuals will profit from them.

The proposed exchange-proximity service also remains exploratory, with no launch date announced in the interview.
