Coinbase and Marqeta team up to let businesses issue stablecoin-backed cards settled on Base

Marqeta and Coinbase are expanding their partnership to help businesses launch stablecoin-backed payment cards, combining Coinbase's digital asset custody and conversion services with Base's blockchain settlement infrastructure and Marqeta's card issuance technology.

Coinbase and Marqeta have expanded their six-year partnership to let enterprises issue stablecoin-backed cards, with Coinbase handling custody and conversion, Base handling settlement and Marqeta handling issuance, though no launch date, supported stablecoins or financial terms have been disclosed.

Stablecoin-Backed Cards combine Coinbase custody with Base settlement

Under the proposed arrangement, Coinbase will custody stablecoin balances and manage conversions between digital assets and fiat currencies. Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum-based layer-2 blockchain network, will provide the on-chain settlement infrastructure supporting the payment programmes.

These functions address different requirements within a stablecoin-backed card system. Custody allows digital asset balances to be held and managed, while conversion enables transactions to move between cryptocurrency and traditional currencies when required.

Settlement infrastructure provides the mechanism for recording and processing transactions on the blockchain. Together, these components are intended to help businesses connect digital asset holdings with payment products that work within conventional card acceptance systems.

The partners have also not disclosed which stablecoins will be supported. Consequently, it remains unclear which digital dollar or other fiat-pegged assets businesses will be able to use when developing their products.

The distinction is important because stablecoins differ in their issuers, reserve arrangements, redemption mechanisms and regulatory treatment. The assets ultimately supported by the programme will help determine which businesses and customers can use the resulting payment products.

Marqeta connects card programmes to global payment networks

Marqeta will handle card issuance and payment processing, while managing relationships with banks and card networks, according to reporting by The Block.

Its technology is designed to help businesses build and manage card programmes without having to develop the underlying issuing and processing infrastructure independently.

Under the expanded partnership, enterprise customers will be able to fund card programmes around the clock and enable cardholders to make purchases at merchants that accept payment cards globally.

This could give businesses a more direct route to integrating stablecoin balances into familiar payment experiences. Rather than requiring customers to navigate a separate cryptocurrency payment process at each merchant, a card programme can connect the digital asset infrastructure to existing card acceptance arrangements.

The proposed model divides responsibilities among the partners. Coinbase will supply custody and digital asset conversion services, Base will support on-chain settlement, and Marqeta will provide the card issuance and processing layer.

Marqeta’s involvement also means enterprise customers can draw on an established card-programme provider rather than having to develop every component from scratch.

Expanded partnership builds on Coinbase’s debit card history

The collaboration extends a relationship that dates back six years, when Marqeta became the processor for Coinbase’s US debit-card offering.

The earlier product was announced in October 2020, establishing an operational connection between Coinbase’s cryptocurrency services and Marqeta’s payment infrastructure.

The expanded arrangement builds on that experience but broadens the focus beyond Coinbase’s own debit card. Instead, it is designed to give other businesses access to infrastructure for developing their own stablecoin-backed cards.

That distinction could be commercially significant. Rather than relying exclusively on the adoption of a single branded card, the companies are positioning their combined services as a foundation that multiple enterprise customers could use to develop payment products.

The expanded collaboration also illustrates how crypto companies and established payment infrastructure providers can divide the technical and operational work required to bring digital assets into everyday financial services.

Stablecoin-Backed Cards face unanswered launch and adoption questions

Despite the announcement, important details about the rollout of stablecoin-backed cards remain undisclosed.

According to Investing.com, the companies have not announced supported stablecoins, financial terms or a specific launch timetable.

There is also no confirmed consumer availability date or published list of enterprise customers expected to use the infrastructure.

These omissions make it difficult to assess how quickly the partnership could translate into products available to ordinary cardholders. Businesses will need to determine which assets they intend to support, how transactions will be funded and converted, and which markets their programmes will serve.

Regulatory requirements will also matter. Card programmes involving stablecoins can be subject to different rules depending on the jurisdictions in which they operate, the entities providing custody and conversion services, and the structure of the payment product.

The commercial appeal of stablecoin-backed cards will ultimately depend on whether businesses can offer a reliable and convenient experience while managing the costs and operational requirements associated with digital asset transactions.

The arrangement could provide companies with a more integrated route to developing such products by bringing custody, conversion, blockchain settlement and card processing into one partnership.

However, the announcement alone does not establish whether the resulting products will offer lower transaction costs, faster settlement for merchants or greater adoption among consumers. Those outcomes will depend on the implementation of individual programmes and their performance once launched.
