Ripple CTO David Schwartz unboxes Fuzzy Cards as XRP Ledger game burns 100,000 NFT packs for physical collectibles

David Schwartz’s public engagement with the trading card project puts the spotlight on a growing experiment that connects blockchain collectibles with physical cards, although its associated FUZZY token remains volatile.

Ripple CTO David Schwartz posted a photo on X of himself opening physical Fuzzy Cards booster packs, boosting visibility for an XRP Ledger trading card game that says about 100,000 digital packs have been burned to claim physical ones. The FUZZY token has more than 11,500 holders, though Schwartz’s post is not a formal Ripple endorsement.

Schwartz’s post draws attention to the XRP ledger trading card game, Fuzzy Cards

The unboxing photograph offers a tangible glimpse into how Fuzzy Cards connects digital ownership with a physical collecting experience. Rather than distributing cards exclusively through conventional retail channels, the project uses blockchain transactions as part of its redemption process.

The timing has also attracted attention. The original report linked Schwartz’s unboxing to the period ahead of Ripple Swell 2026 in New York, where members of the XRP community were reportedly preparing FuzzyCon, a parallel gathering focused on the card game and its community.

Schwartz had also reportedly established a trustline to FUZZY earlier in May. On the XRP Ledger, a trustline allows an account to indicate that it is willing to hold a particular issued token, subject to the ledger’s asset-handling rules. Establishing one does not, by itself, establish the size of a person’s holdings or demonstrate an investment commitment.

Together, these developments have helped bring the project to the attention of XRP enthusiasts who may not previously have encountered it. Still, the significance of the CTO’s participation should be kept in perspective: public interaction can raise awareness, but adoption, liquidity and long-term demand depend on factors beyond social media visibility.

From a 2014 XRP ledger order to a P physical collectibles project

The project’s backstory reaches into the early history of the XRP Ledger. According to the account behind Fuzzy Cards, a wallet identified as FuzzyBear placed an order on the ledger’s decentralized exchange on January 1, 2014, seeking to trade 1 XRP for 1 BTC. The order reportedly went unfilled, but the anecdote later became part of the inspiration for the FUZZY meme token, launched in early 2025.

The project is published by XPUNKS GmbH, a company based in Zug, Switzerland, associated with NFT and trading card initiatives in the XRPL ecosystem. Its initial card collection reportedly contains 150 unique designs divided among five factions and three categories: Heroes, Relics and Events. Around 60 cards are said to feature special holographic editions.

The size and structure of the collection are intended to support collecting and gameplay rather than simply offering interchangeable digital assets. However, the depth of the game’s mechanics, the balance between card categories and the long-term appeal of the collection will ultimately depend on how players use the cards and how the project develops.

How the burn-to-physical system works

The distribution model is central to the appeal of Fuzzy Cards. Collectors acquire digital booster packs represented by non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that follow the XRP Ledger’s XLS-20 standard. They then use the project’s redemption portal to permanently burn eligible digital packs in exchange for physical booster packs.

Each redeemed pack contains five randomly selected cards. The blockchain transaction records the destruction of the digital asset, while the physical cards provide the collector with something tangible to keep, trade or submit for professional grading.

The project has identified grading services such as Certified Guaranty Company (CGC), Professional Coin Authentication (PCA) and TAG as potential options for collectors seeking to authenticate and grade their cards. Grading availability and acceptance remain subject to each provider’s policies.

The approach differs from conventional digital collectibles because redemption involves a physical product rather than leaving ownership entirely on-chain. Nevertheless, the NFT burn does not automatically establish the market value of the resulting cards, and collectors should consider shipping, production and resale limitations.

100,000 pack burns raise questions about long-term demand

The reported 100,000-pack milestone suggests that Fuzzy Cards has attracted meaningful activity from collectors willing to exchange digital assets for physical merchandise. Yet pack burns alone cannot establish how many unique people are playing the game, how frequently the cards change hands or whether demand will persist.

Project founder Kai Leroy has argued that hybrid trading card games could benefit from the appeal of physical collecting. In coverage published by U.Today on October 18, Leroy said, “The hardest part isn’t the art or the hype. It’s building a game that’s actually fun and actually works.”

His comments highlight a challenge facing blockchain gaming projects: attracting initial attention is different from maintaining an active player base. Game balance, card scarcity, production schedules and distribution logistics can all affect whether a collectible retains its appeal.

The broader market also presents risks. FUZZY is a meme token, and its price can fluctuate sharply with sentiment and wider cryptocurrency market movements. A growing holder count or a prominent social media post does not guarantee token appreciation or establish the underlying value of the trading cards.

XPUNKS GmbH has also been working to expand retail access through partnerships with local game stores. If successful, this strategy could help introduce the cards to collectors who are less familiar with NFTs, although the commercial impact will depend on retailer participation and sustained customer interest.

For now, Fuzzy Cards offers an example of how blockchain technology can connect digital transactions with traditional collectibles. Schwartz’s unboxing has increased its visibility, while the reported burn figures provide one measure of participation. Whether the project can turn that attention into lasting gameplay and retail demand remains the more important test.
