SoFi launches SOFIE, a tokenized deposit that pays interest before you convert to SoFiUSD stablecoin

SoFi is bringing interest-earning bank deposits closer to blockchain payments, giving consumers a way to earn returns on eligible balances before converting funds into digital dollars.

SoFi Technologies has launched SoFi Earn (SOFIE), a tokenized deposit that lets customers earn interest on digital dollars before converting them into its SoFiUSD stablecoin. Stablecoins generally pay holders nothing; SOFIE, which SoFi calls the first consumer tokenized deposit from a U.S. national bank, is built to close that gap.

SOFIE targets idle stablecoin balances

The launch comes as financial institutions look for ways to make digital dollars more useful beyond cryptocurrency trading. Although stablecoins support blockchain transfers and digital asset transactions, some balances remain inactive for extended periods.

Research published by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City in April 2026 estimated that approximately 21.2% of stablecoins were idle. That finding highlights a potential opportunity for products that let consumers earn returns on money they intend to use later.

However, the research does not establish that all inactive stablecoins belong to forgotten wallets or that every idle balance would qualify for an interest-bearing bank product. It provides a broader estimate of how stablecoin supply is being used.

SOFIE is designed to address the underlying economic question: why should consumers hold digital dollars without earning interest while waiting for a suitable time to trade or transfer them?

For example, a customer holding $5,000 in an eligible SOFIE deposit account while saving for a crypto purchase could earn the applicable APY before converting the funds into SoFiUSD. The actual return would depend on the account’s applicable rate and terms.

That arrangement could appeal to consumers who want access to blockchain transactions but prefer to keep funds in a bank deposit until they are ready to use them. It also gives SoFi another way to connect its deposit-taking business with its growing digital asset services.

Bank deposit protection is not the same as stablecoin protection

The regulatory distinction between a tokenized deposit and a stablecoin is central to the new offering.

An eligible bank deposit may qualify for Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) protection, subject to applicable limits, ownership categories, and other requirements. A stablecoin, by contrast, is a digital asset whose value is designed to track a reference currency or asset. Holding a stablecoin does not itself confer FDIC deposit insurance.

The same distinction applies to SoFiUSD. In its May 2026 announcement introducing the stablecoin on its banking platform, SoFi said members could buy, sell, hold, and convert the dollar-pegged asset through its app. The company also explained its plan to connect stablecoin functionality with tokenized deposits.

SoFi CEO Anthony Noto said in the May announcement: “At SoFi, we believe we can combine the speed and versatility of the blockchain with the trust of a bank to improve how money moves around the world.”

SOFIE extends that strategy by introducing an interest-earning deposit option alongside the company’s stablecoin offering. Nevertheless, the protections attached to the deposit should not be confused with protections for cryptocurrency holdings, and customers must review the relevant account terms.

The practical benefit is the ability to choose between different forms of money according to their intended use: an eligible deposit for holding funds and potentially earning interest, or a stablecoin for supported blockchain transactions.

SoFi deepens its push into blockchain payments

The tokenized deposit launch builds on a broader expansion into digital assets and blockchain-based financial services.

SoFi introduced consumer cryptocurrency trading in November 2025, enabling members to buy, sell, and hold more than 40 cryptocurrencies through its app, according to the company’s announcement described in the original report. That move brought crypto trading alongside its established financial products.

The company followed with SoFiUSD, positioning the stablecoin as a tool for dollar-denominated transfers and settlement around the clock. Its partnership with Mastercard has also progressed beyond a future plan: in September 2026, SoFi announced that stablecoin settlement had gone live across its debit and credit card program through Mastercard’s global payments network.

Together, these developments illustrate SoFi’s ambition to connect conventional banking services with blockchain infrastructure rather than operate crypto products in isolation.

The long-term significance of the tokenized deposit will depend on customer adoption, the applicable interest rate, conversion arrangements, and the range of supported blockchain destinations. Users will also need clear information about fees, access conditions, and the protections attached to each product.

If consumers adopt the model, SOFIE could offer a more flexible way to manage digital dollars between periods of saving and spending. For SoFi, it strengthens the link between bank deposits, stablecoins, cryptocurrency trading, and blockchain-based payments.

The broader challenge remains turning technical capabilities into everyday financial utility. By allowing eligible balances to earn interest before conversion into SoFiUSD, SoFi is attempting to make that connection more practical for consumers.
