Flash loan drains $1.01 million from Avalanche’s Tranche Vault, leaving contract with zero USDC

A flash loan attack targeting a DeFi vault linked to Fence Finance and Valinor Digital drained more than $1 million in USDC, raising fresh concerns about smart contract security and investor exposure.

An attacker used a flash loan to drain 1,013,353.61 USDC from Tranche Vault on Avalanche, leaving the contract with a zero balance and no confirmed path for depositors to withdraw, blockchain security firm Blockaid said on October 28.

How the Tranche Vault exploit unfolded

The Tranche Vault security incident involved a series of blockchain transactions that ultimately removed approximately $1.01 million in USDC from the targeted contract.

According to reporting by The Defiant, republished on CryptoNews.net, the vault transferred 1,013,353.61 USDC to an attack contract at approximately 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time on October 27.

The funds were subsequently forwarded to a wallet identified by Blockaid as belonging to the exploiter. The security firm linked the affected vault to Fence Finance and Valinor Digital, two names associated with the incident.

Blockaid described the suspected mechanism in its public alert: An attacker used a flash loan to mint inflated tranche shares, then redeemed the vault’s remaining $USDC.”

A flash loan is a form of cryptocurrency borrowing in which funds are borrowed and repaid within a single blockchain transaction. Because the borrowing and repayment occur in the same transaction, the borrower generally does not need to provide conventional collateral in the way required by traditional lending arrangements.

Although flash loans have legitimate uses, including arbitrage and collateral swaps, they can also provide attackers with temporary capital to exploit weaknesses in decentralized finance protocols.

On-chain records reveal the scale of the loss

Blockchain transaction records provide important evidence about the movement of funds during the Tranche Vault exploit.

According to the available reporting, an earlier transaction at approximately 7:56 p.m. Eastern Time involved the same amount of USDC entering and then leaving the vault.

The later transfer to the attack contract completed the sequence that resulted in a net outflow of 1,013,353.61 USDC, according to The Defiant’s calculation.

The figures are important because USDC is designed to maintain a value close to one US dollar. Consequently, the reported amount represents approximately $1.01 million in stablecoin assets rather than a loss calculated from the fluctuating market price of a volatile cryptocurrency.

A subsequent check of the affected contract’s balance showed that it held zero USDC. The identified victim contract address was captured as `0xE25CB545Bdd47a8Ec2d08001cb5661B00D47621a`

The zero balance raises immediate questions about the ability of the contract to process withdrawal requests backed by USDC. Depositors may have claims recorded through the protocol, but those claims do not automatically guarantee that sufficient assets remain available to honour them.

Fence Finance and Valinor face unanswered security questions

The reported connection to Fence Finance and Valinor Digital places the Tranche Vault exploit under scrutiny from users seeking information about the affected infrastructure and the safety of their funds.

At the time of the source report, it had not been confirmed whether the vault had been paused or whether the underlying vulnerability had been corrected.

The available information also did not establish whether the affected depositors would receive compensation or whether any portion of the missing USDC could be recovered.

These uncertainties matter because the immediate response to a smart contract exploit can influence the extent of further losses. If a vulnerable contract remains operational, additional transactions may expose remaining funds to risk.

Conversely, pausing affected functions can limit activity while developers and security specialists investigate, although a pause cannot by itself restore assets that have already been transferred away.

What the Tranche Vault incident means for crypto investors

The Tranche Vault exploit offers several lessons for investors participating in decentralized finance, particularly those seeking returns from lending, liquidity provision or structured vault strategies.

First, stablecoins do not eliminate protocol risk. Although USDC is designed to track the US dollar, depositing it into a smart contract introduces additional risks associated with software vulnerabilities, accounting errors and unauthorised transactions.

The stability of a token’s intended price does not guarantee the safety of funds held in a DeFi application.

The incident also reinforces the value of limiting exposure to any single protocol. Diversifying across independently assessed platforms and avoiding deposits that exceed one’s tolerance for a potential total loss can reduce concentration risk, although diversification cannot eliminate risks shared across the wider DeFi ecosystem.

The Tranche Vault exploit remains a reminder that blockchain transparency does not automatically translate into financial security.

Public records can reveal where funds moved, but recovering assets and restoring confidence depend on technical remediation, cooperation among relevant parties and clear communication with affected users.

For now, the reported loss of approximately $1.01 million in USDC places the focus on the status of the affected contract, the response from the associated projects and whether further evidence will clarify the vulnerability.

Until those questions are answered, investors should treat the incident as a warning about the technical and liquidity risks that accompany yield-generating DeFi products.
