Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong says AI agents will pay for single articles in stablecoins, not monthly subscriptions

Brian Armstrong believes AI-powered agents and crypto micropayments could let consumers pay for individual articles and digital services without committing to recurring monthly fees.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong says the future of online payments may not involve monthly plans at all. In a post on X, he argued that AI agents using stablecoins and Coinbase’s x402 protocol could pay publishers for a single article, report or API call, with no account, card details or recurring bill.

How Stablecoins and x402 could change online payments

The Subscription economy has become a common way for publishers, streaming platforms, software developers and other digital businesses to generate recurring revenue. However, paying for an entire month of access can be inconvenient for someone who needs only one article, one report or a single use of a service.

Armstrong’s proposal offers a different approach. An AI agent could identify the requested content, communicate with a compatible website, complete the required payment and retrieve the material for its user.

Coinbase introduced x402 in May 2025 as an open payment standard designed to facilitate stablecoin transactions through ordinary internet requests. It uses the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code to communicate payment requirements, allowing compatible applications and AI agents to pay for digital resources programmatically.

In its technical announcement, Coinbase described how the protocol could support paid API requests, on-demand software features and digital content without requiring conventional subscription arrangements.

The potential advantage is fewer steps between requesting a service and paying for it. Instead of registering an account, entering card details and accepting a recurring billing plan, a user could authorise an agent to complete a small transaction for a specific resource.

For the Subscription economy, this would introduce a more flexible payment option rather than automatically eliminate existing subscription products.

AI agents could pay for individual articles and services

One of the most significant implications is the possibility of making AI agents active participants in online commerce. These systems could do more than search for information or summarise webpages; with appropriate permissions and payment infrastructure, they could purchase access to information required to complete a task.

For example, someone researching a business opportunity might ask an AI assistant to gather several premium reports. Rather than paying for multiple monthly memberships, the agent could purchase individual reports from participating providers, provided those providers support automated payments.

The same model could work for developers who need a single API request, businesses purchasing specialised datasets or users accessing premium digital tools occasionally.

Coinbase’s technical documentation identifies these kinds of pay-per-use transactions as potential applications of x402. The protocol is designed to let compatible clients respond to payment requests and submit stablecoin payments as part of an automated internet interaction.

Coinbase has also highlighted the broader opportunity beyond individual consumers. During its first-quarter 2026 earnings call, Armstrong described x402 as an open protocol developed at Coinbase for agentic commerce, enabling agents to attach payments to requests for online services.

This approach could give publishers another way to earn revenue from readers who are unwilling to purchase full subscriptions. It may also help smaller digital businesses charge for specialised services without building elaborate account-management and billing systems.

However, the technology does not guarantee that every website will accept micropayments. Publishers and service providers would need to implement compatible payment systems, establish prices and decide how to manage access to their products.

Publishers face new revenue opportunities and challenges

For businesses built around the Subscription economy, usage-based payments present both an opportunity and a commercial challenge.

A publication could potentially earn revenue from occasional readers who would otherwise leave when confronted with a paywall. Instead of requiring a monthly commitment, it could offer individual articles for a small fee. Software companies could similarly charge according to actual usage rather than requiring customers to purchase a fixed plan.

Yet the economics are not straightforward. A publisher would need to set prices high enough to cover content production, payment processing and operational costs. When individual transactions are very small, even modest fees or technical overhead could undermine profitability.

There is also the question of how much revenue a publication would generate from one-off purchases compared with predictable monthly subscriptions. Recurring payments offer businesses greater revenue visibility, while micropayments could produce less consistent income.

Coinbase’s x402 launch announcement featured Erik Reppel, the company’s head of engineering for its developer platform, describing the underlying ambition: “the internet has always needed a native way to send and receive payments.”

That vision captures the infrastructure challenge behind Armstrong’s prediction. Making payments easier is only one part of the equation; businesses must also ensure that automated purchases are secure, authorised and commercially sustainable.

Will the subscription model disappear?

Despite the excitement surrounding AI-driven payments, Armstrong’s prediction should not be interpreted as confirmation that recurring billing is about to disappear. Monthly plans remain convenient for services people use regularly, including streaming platforms, cloud software and digital publications they read frequently.

The more likely outcome is a market where subscriptions coexist with pay-per-use options. Consumers could choose recurring plans for frequent access while paying individually for occasional purchases. Subscription economy Businesses might offer both models to reach different customer segments.

Security and user control will also be essential. AI agents handling financial transactions need clear spending limits, appropriate authorisation and safeguards against unauthorised purchases. Consumers must be able to understand what an agent is buying and how much it costs.

Stablecoins introduce additional considerations, including blockchain transaction risks, regulatory requirements and the need for reliable payment infrastructure. Although x402 can simplify the technical process, it does not remove every commercial, legal or security challenge associated with digital payments.

The future of the Subscription economy will therefore depend on whether micropayments can deliver sustainable revenue for businesses while providing a genuinely better experience for consumers.

Armstrong’s proposal nevertheless points to a significant shift in how internet services could be monetised. If AI agents become common intermediaries between consumers and online businesses, payment systems may increasingly need to support transactions initiated by software rather than humans.

For now, the end of subscriptions remains a possibility, not an established outcome. But the combination of stablecoins, automated agents and protocols such as x402 could give consumers more ways to pay for digital access—and give businesses new ways to charge for what they provide.
