A U.K. man identified only as Chris has recovered 61 Bitcoin worth roughly $4.7 million (£3.3 million), more than 12 years after his account was frozen in the collapse of early exchange Intersango, according to an LBC News report.
Chris first became interested in Bitcoin in 2011 after a friend encouraged him to invest in the then-emerging cryptocurrency. He eventually purchased roughly $2,031 worth of Bitcoin through Intersango, one of the earliest Bitcoin exchanges operating in the United Kingdom.
At the time, the investment was relatively modest. But the value of Bitcoin increased dramatically over the years, turning what began as a cautious cryptocurrency purchase into a potentially life-changing holding.
That opportunity appeared to disappear when problems began to affect the exchange.
The Intersango collapse was preceded by serious difficulties at the platform in late 2012. By early 2014, its website had gone offline, while customers attempting to withdraw their funds received no response. Chris subsequently discovered that his account had been frozen.
The sudden loss of access meant that the Bitcoin he had purchased years earlier was effectively out of reach.
For years, Chris tried to contact the company without success. Eventually, he accepted that the cryptocurrency might never be recovered.
The long search for the missing Bitcoin
The Intersango collapse became particularly consequential for Chris because the Bitcoin was not necessarily gone; rather, access to it had become tied to a failed exchange and questions surrounding the ownership of assets held by the company.
According to the account, there was speculation that Bitcoin remained in accounts controlled by one of Intersango’s co-founders. Former users could potentially recover their assets if they were able to provide sufficient evidence demonstrating ownership.
For Chris, however, establishing that claim proved difficult.
He made repeated attempts over the years to contact the company, but those efforts produced no result. With no clear path toward recovering his coins, he eventually moved on from the matter.
The passage of time also changed the financial significance of what had been a relatively small investment.
Earlier this year, Chris decided to make another attempt. This time, he sought legal assistance to establish ownership of dozens of Bitcoin connected to his old account.
Within several months, the effort succeeded.
The cryptocurrency was returned to him, with the recovered Bitcoin valued at approximately $4.47 million at the time of the report.
The reversal illustrates how dramatically Bitcoin’s value has changed since the Intersango collapse. An investment worth only a few thousand dollars when Chris acquired it eventually became a multimillion-dollar asset after more than a decade of appreciation.
Intersango collapse recovery brings shock and caution
The financial windfall came as a surprise not only to Chris but also to his family.
When he told them that he had recovered the Bitcoin and explained its current value, he said their “jaws dropped” and their “eyes popped.”
Despite successfully recovering the cryptocurrency, however, Chris said the experience has not eliminated his concerns about the security of digital assets.
He now keeps his cryptocurrency on an exchange regulated by the U.K.’s Financial Conduct Authority. Even so, his experience with the Intersango collapse has apparently left him highly cautious about leaving substantial amounts of Bitcoin in the custody of another platform.
Chris said he checks his cryptocurrency “every single day, 20 times a day.”

The reaction underscores an enduring concern among cryptocurrency holders: ownership of an asset does not necessarily guarantee uninterrupted access to it when an exchange fails, accounts are frozen or companies disappear.
The Intersango collapse occurred during an earlier period of the cryptocurrency industry, when exchanges were generally less mature and regulatory protections were less developed than they are today. Chris’s experience demonstrates how unresolved claims can remain dormant for years before circumstances allow assets to be recovered.
Another lost Bitcoin fortune remains unrecovered
The Intersango collapse is not the only case in Britain involving a potentially enormous Bitcoin fortune that became inaccessible.
Another widely reported incident involves a software engineer who accidentally discarded a hard drive containing approximately 8,000 BTC.

The individual has spent years attempting to persuade local authorities to allow him to search the landfill where he believes the hard drive ended up. Those efforts have included public proposals and legal action, but he has so far been unable to retrieve the device.
The two cases highlight opposite outcomes for people who lost access to Bitcoin years ago. While Chris ultimately succeeded in recovering his holdings after the Intersango collapse, the owner of the discarded hard drive remains unable to access his much larger stash.
The difference illustrates the importance of documentation and proof of ownership in recovering cryptocurrency held through failed platforms or lost devices.
Bitcoin’s value magnifies the Intersango collapse story
The extraordinary value attached to Chris’s recovered Bitcoin is largely a product of Bitcoin’s price growth over the past 12 years.
At the time of the report, Bitcoin was trading at $77,990.66, down 0.19% over the previous 24 hours, according to Benzinga Pro.
