The Money laundering case involving an alleged cross-border crypto-hawala network took a major turn on Thursday after India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) announced the arrest of a Dubai-based Indian national accused of helping international drug syndicates move illicit funds through cryptocurrencies and foreign exchange channels.

The Money laundering case, which stems from an investigation initiated by Goa Police’s Anti-Narcotics Cell, centers on allegations that proceeds from narcotics sales across several Indian states were converted into crypto assets before being transferred to suppliers overseas.

The arrest was made public on July 23, with the accused remanded to ED custody for seven days as investigators continue tracing the alleged financial network.

Money laundering case exposes alleged crypto-hawala network

According to the Enforcement Directorate, the arrested suspect, identified as Nihal VN, allegedly played a central role in facilitating financial transactions for drug trafficking organizations operating across multiple continents.

The agency said Nihal acted as a key financial conduit, converting cash generated through narcotics sales in India into cryptocurrencies and foreign currencies before routing the funds abroad.

Investigators allege the funds were subsequently transferred to suppliers based in Brazil and Thailand to finance the procurement of high-grade narcotics and synthetic drugs intended for smuggling into India.

The Money laundering case also involves the identification of multiple cryptocurrency wallets, offshore bank accounts, and domestic shell entities that investigators believe were used to disguise the movement of illicit proceeds.

The ED has not disclosed the value of the alleged transactions but said the investigation remains active as officials continue tracking financial flows and identifying additional participants.

Money laundering case linked to nationwide narcotics investigation

The Money laundering case originates from a First Information Report (FIR) registered by the Anti-Narcotics Cell of Goa Police under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

According to the ED, the underlying investigation concerns an alleged interstate drug trafficking syndicate that supplied narcotics on a business-to-business basis across several Indian states, including Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and Kerala.

Authorities allege the criminal network distributed narcotics through an organized supply chain while relying on cryptocurrency transactions and hawala channels to conceal the origin and destination of illicit proceeds.

The agency stated that the latest arrest represents one aspect of a broader investigation into the syndicate’s financial infrastructure and international connections.

Earlier searches uncovered cash and digital evidence

The Money laundering case has already resulted in extensive enforcement action across India.

The ED said it previously conducted coordinated searches at 26 locations spread across Goa, Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Odisha, Delhi, and other jurisdictions.

During those operations, investigators seized approximately ₹3 crore in cash along with documents and multiple digital devices believed to contain evidence relevant to the investigation.

“The laundered funds were routed to suppliers in Brazil and Thailand to finance the procurement of high-grade narcotics and synthetic drugs for smuggling into India.” — Enforcement Directorate (ED)

The agency also confirmed that the principal accused in the investigation, Madhupan SS, was arrested on January 17 and remains in judicial custody while legal proceedings continue.

Officials have not indicated whether further arrests are imminent but said forensic analysis of the seized electronic devices remains underway.

Money laundering case investigation continues

The Money laundering case remains under active investigation as the Enforcement Directorate seeks to uncover the full extent of the alleged crypto-hawala operation.

Following Nihal VN’s arrest, he was produced before a Special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) Court in Goa, which remanded him to ED custody until July 28 to facilitate further questioning.

“Further investigation is underway to identify all beneficiaries and facilitators and trace assets allegedly generated through the illicit activities.” — Enforcement Directorate (ED)

Investigators are expected to examine the alleged role of additional individuals, financial intermediaries, and entities suspected of facilitating the movement of proceeds generated through narcotics trafficking.

The agency is also working to trace assets that may have been acquired using illicit funds and determine the complete financial trail behind the alleged international operation.
