France emerges as global hotspot for $30 million in wrench attacks
New blockchain data shows the global rise of wrench attack incidents, with France emerging as the epicenter of violent crimes targeting cryptocurrency holders.
Violent wrench attack incidents targeting cryptocurrency holders have already resulted in an estimated $30 million in stolen digital assets during the first half of 2026, according to a new report published by blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis on August 6.
The report found that wrench attack cases including kidnappings, home invasions, and hostage situations are increasing worldwide, with France recording the highest number of publicly known incidents. Researchers say the surge reflects criminals’ growing willingness to use physical violence to force victims into transferring digital assets that can be moved instantly across blockchain networks.

Chainalysis said 2026 is on course to become the worst year on record for wrench attack crimes if current trends continue. The firm estimates that criminals have already extracted more than $30 million from victims by mid-year, compared with a record $58 million stolen throughout 2025.

While the number of attacks continues to climb, attackers are succeeding less frequently than in previous years. Through late June, only 26% of documented violent theft attempts resulted in victims transferring funds, down from 49% in 2025 and 67% in 2024.According to the report, France has become the world’s primary wrench attack hotspot.
Prior to 2025, the country recorded only a handful of crypto-related violent crimes. That changed dramatically, with 19 incidents recorded in 2025 and 30 publicly known attacks by mid-2026.
French Interior Minister acknowledged the growing threat after authorities documented more than 70 crypto-related violent incidents.

In response, Nuñez announced plans to strengthen security for people working in the cryptocurrency sector, including a rapid identification and alert system for individuals considered at risk.
Chainalysis believes a 2024 breach involving a French tax official may have significantly contributed to the spike. According to the report, sensitive records containing names, addresses, phone numbers, crypto holdings, and tax information of wealthy crypto investors were allegedly stolen and sold to criminal groups, expanding the pool of potential victims.
Home invasions become a growing wrench attack tactic
The report found that the nature of wrench attack crimes is also evolving.
Kidnappings remain the most common type of attack, accounting for 52% of documented incidents in 2026. However, home invasions have increased sharply, rising from 26% of cases in 2023 to 37% this year.
Chainalysis explained that home invasions allow criminals to confront victims inside familiar surroundings, making it easier to force immediate cryptocurrency transfers. Kidnappings, by contrast, require more planning, logistics, and prolonged contact with victims, increasing risks for perpetrators.
Researchers also observed a disturbing shift toward targeting relatives.
By early 2026, approximately 25% to 30% of reported incidents involved family members or acquaintances rather than the cryptocurrency holder directly. In France alone, more than 40% of attacks reportedly targeted relatives to pressure victims into surrendering access to their wallets.
The report further noted that most victims are local residents instead of tourists, suggesting attackers often rely on prior surveillance, leaked databases, blockchain analysis, social media activity, or insider information before selecting targets.
Blockchain trails expose different levels of criminal sophistication
Although wrench attack crimes rely on physical violence, investigators can still use blockchain analysis to trace stolen funds.
Chainalysis identified three categories of attackers based on how they move cryptocurrency after a successful theft.
The first group consists of relatively inexperienced criminals who transfer stolen assets directly to centralized exchanges, making them easier for law enforcement to identify and freeze.
The second group demonstrates greater knowledge of decentralized finance, using decentralized exchanges, blockchain bridges, MEV bots, and multiple wallets to obscure transaction histories before attempting to cash out.
The third and most concerning category involves organized criminal networks. According to Chainalysis, these actors route stolen assets through sophisticated laundering services and infrastructure previously linked to other illicit operations.

Researchers added that while many of the individuals carrying out the violence appear to be low-skill operatives recruited through messaging platforms, the financial infrastructure supporting them is often significantly more advanced.
Privacy and operational security become increasingly important
Chainalysis warned that growing cryptocurrency adoption is changing the nature of physical crime.
Unlike traditional wealth stored in banks or protected by institutional safeguards, many digital assets remain under the direct control of individual holders through self-custody wallets. This makes victims particularly vulnerable when attackers obtain personal information or identify large crypto holdings.
The report advised holders to avoid publicly revealing their cryptocurrency wealth, exercise caution when linking blockchain addresses to real-world identities, and strengthen both digital and physical security measures.
It also stressed that governments collecting sensitive taxpayer or regulatory information must adequately protect those records to prevent them from becoming valuable intelligence for organized criminals.
For investigators, Chainalysis argued that blockchain’s transparency remains a powerful advantage despite the violence associated with wrench attack cases.
