Gunmen killed Mexican musician Jonathan Meléndez, his pregnant wife, their three-year-old daughter, and a 21-year-old household employee in a Bitcoin wallet robbery at their home in Atizapán de Zaragoza on September 1, 2026, prosecutors say.

Two suspects, identified as Diego Sebastián ‘N’ and Gerardo ‘N,’ were arrested the following day; Meléndez’s six-year-old son was found alive at the scene.

Investigators probe missing cold storage device

At an initial court hearing, prosecutors said the suspects had gone to the home specifically seeking a cold-storage device believed to hold access to a significant Bitcoin holding, reinforcing the theory that this was a calculated Bitcoin wallet robbery rather than a random burglary. A USB device thought to contain wallet access information has not been recovered.

The exact size of the alleged stash remains disputed. Some reports have placed it at roughly 30 million Mexican pesos, or about $1.5 million, while more detailed court reporting cited a relative’s testimony putting Meléndez’s known crypto investment closer to 3 million pesos.

Investigators recovered a safe from the suspects’ getaway vehicle and are examining whether any cryptocurrency was actually transferred on the day of the killings. Around 70 pieces of evidence were presented at the hearing, and prosecutors have alleged the attack was premeditated.

Unconfirmed reports suggest funds may have later been moved to the wife of one suspect in Spain, though authorities have not verified whether the attackers succeeded in obtaining any crypto at all. That uncertainty leaves open questions about whether this Bitcoin wallet robbery achieved its apparent goal, even as its human cost is already clear.

Mexico joins a global wave of crypto violence

The Atizapán case adds Mexico to a growing list of countries confronting physical violence tied to digital wealth, with France emerging as the most prominent example of the trend. Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis recorded 19 publicly known violent crypto incidents in France during 2025, and another 30 in the first half of 2026 alone.

French authorities have separately documented more than 70 such incidents, suggesting the true scale is likely larger than public figures indicate.

French cases have increasingly involved kidnappings and home invasions in which attackers target relatives of crypto holders to apply pressure, rather than confronting the holder directly. More than 40% of documented incidents in France reportedly involved a family member or associate rather than the primary wallet owner, a pattern that echoes the circumstances of the Mexico attack.

Globally, Chainalysis documented 46 violent crypto-related incidents through late June 2026, up from 40 during the same period the previous year, with criminals extracting more than $30 million through these attacks. Home invasions accounted for 37% of the incidents tracked.

Protecting crypto wealth beyond the wallet

The Mexico case underscores a distinction between a conventional Bitcoin wallet robbery and typical financial crime: attackers do not need to breach a blockchain or crack encryption if they can identify and physically coerce the person holding the private keys.

As crypto adoption grows, security experts increasingly argue that shielding the link between a person’s real-world identity and their digital assets is becoming just as critical as securing the wallet itself.

For now, Mexican prosecutors continue to build their case against the two suspects, while the surviving six-year-old and extended family are left to grapple with the aftermath of a Bitcoin wallet robbery that investigators say cost four lives and may still not have delivered the crypto the attackers were after.
