A victim who lost $1.1 million in an investment fraud reported to the FBI last December has already recovered $40,000, one of several recoveries Ohio’s criminal investigations bureau has made since launching a crypto fraud unit in 2024, bringing its total reclaimed funds past $500,000.
According to the agency, the recovery program has helped victims reclaim funds lost through online fraud schemes while ongoing investigations continue to pursue additional stolen assets.
Ohio expands fight against cryptocurrency scams
In a press release, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation said the achievement reflects the work of its Electronic Financial Investigations Unit, a specialized team tasked with tracking digital financial crimes and dismantling networks behind cryptocurrency scams.

Investment fraud case highlights cryptocurrency scams risks
BCI cited one ongoing investigation involving a victim who lost $1.1 million in an investment-related fraud, underscoring the financial impact of cryptocurrency scams.
The victim reported the incident to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) in December 2025. The complaint was subsequently referred to Ohio BCI in January 2026 for further investigation.
Investigators said they successfully traced a significant portion of the stolen funds through a global cryptocurrency exchange. Using a warrant, the team recovered $40,000, which has already been returned to the victim.
