A Saskatchewan court has ordered the extradition of Ryan James Roach to the United States, finding sufficient evidence that he conspired to hack into American university systems, steal more than 1,900 login credentials, and redirect supercomputer processing power to mine Electroneum without authorisation, causing an estimated $337,000 in damages.
The ruling relates to allegations that Roach conspired with another Canadian man to gain unauthorized access to educational institutions in the United States, steal login credentials, install malware, and redirect computing resources toward cryptocurrency mining operations.

According to court documents reviewed by CBC News, U.S. prosecutors allege that Roach and another Canadian citizen, Mathiew James Stubbings, conspired to hack into at least one educational institution in New York State.
Investigators claim the operation resulted in the theft of more than 1,900 login credentials and the installation of malware that allowed remote access to university supercomputers.
Prosecutors allege the computing power was then used to mine Electroneum, a cryptocurrency, without authorization.
The alleged breach caused approximately $337,000 in damages, including costs associated with shutting down affected systems, conducting forensic investigations, and rebuilding compromised infrastructure.

According to court filings, investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation traced a digital trail linking the alleged operation to Roach. The evidence reportedly included IP address records, server logs, email accounts, hosting records, and data connected to stolen credentials and malware deployments.
The U.S. government’s case relies heavily on findings from an FBI investigation that examined online activity connected to the alleged intrusion.
Court documents indicate investigators reconstructed how university systems were allegedly accessed remotely and how compromised accounts were used to facilitate cryptocurrency mining activities.

Justice Currie acknowledged arguments from the defence that some evidence could support an alternative interpretation of Roach’s actions.
“Mr. Roach conducted his research specific to high-performance computing at Institution 1 during that attack, not prior to that attack,” Currie wrote, noting the defence position that Roach may have been attempting to understand what was occurring rather than participating in planning it.
However, the judge concluded that other evidence presented by prosecutors supported a different inference.
“Mr. Roach and Mr. Stubbings intended to agree, and did agree, to hack into educational institutions, install malware, steal login credentials, and mine cryptocurrency, all without authorization,” Currie wrote.
The ruling further stated: “Since these inferences reasonably may be drawn from the evidence … I conclude that a reasonable jury, properly instructed, could convict Mr. Roach of having conspired to commit unauthorized use of a computer.”
The findings played a central role in advancing the Ryan James Roach extradition process.
Despite the extradition order, the legal process remains ongoing.
A day after the committal order was issued, Saskatchewan’s Court of Appeal granted Roach interim release while awaiting the federal government’s final decision.
Roach’s lawyer, Patricia Farnese, said her client will not appeal the committal order.

According to Farnese, the ruling does not meet the legal threshold necessary for a successful appeal, and pursuing one could unnecessarily delay proceedings.

Farnese confirmed that submissions have already been made to the minister. Under Canadian extradition procedures, the minister has 90 days to make a decision. If surrender is authorized, Roach would retain the right to challenge that decision through additional appeals.
