Excitement as Visa announces plan to enable crypto payments across 175m merchant locations

The partnership would let customers spend from existing crypto wallets while merchants receive standard Visa payments, with five launch partners named and rollout details still pending.

Crypto spending is edging closer to everyday checkout. Visa and Mesh plan to let users pay from crypto and stablecoin balances at more than 175 million merchant locations, and Mesh CEO Bam Azizi has already shown it working at a standard terminal at Money20/20.

Launch partners include Kalshi, Tools for Humanity, Félix Pago, MAJORITY and KAST, but no wallet has gone live yet.

World Money payment demonstrated at Money20/20

Mesh said its chief executive, Bam Azizi, demonstrated a purchase at Money20/20 alongside Visa’s global head of growth, Rubail Birwadker. The payment came from a balance in Tools for Humanity’s World Money app and used a standard terminal, according to the company’s LinkedIn account.

The post did not identify which asset funded the purchase. The demonstration shows the experience Mesh is promoting, but does not establish that the feature is available to ordinary customers across the five named partners.

Mesh’s explanatory article explicitly identifies those companies as launch partners for Visa spending. It also makes access conditional on a wallet or platform going live with the integration. Customers will therefore need an activation announcement from a participating provider before they can determine whether they are eligible.

A Visa credential remains behind the payment

The proposed experience places a Visa payment credential behind the customer’s wallet interface. A user would tap at a contactless terminal or complete an online checkout, while Mesh arranges funding from supported crypto, stablecoin or fiat balances. The merchant’s existing checkout would handle the resulting payment.

The aim is to remove the preparatory steps that separate holding an asset from spending it. Customers would not need to manually convert their funds and move the proceeds to another account before shopping.

Conversion would still occur at payment time. Mesh’s SmartFunding technology is designed to identify a route between the assets a customer holds and the currency required for a transaction, taking account of factors such as cost, speed and available liquidity.

“Mesh handles the funding and conversion, so a balance becomes purchasing power at the moment of payment,” Azizi said in the announcement.

Mesh would also act as programme manager, handling customer onboarding and identity verification. Wallet providers would integrate with Mesh instead of independently building and operating the issuing and payment capabilities required to offer the experience.

What the 175 million merchant figure measures

Visa’s own corporate information lists more than 175 million merchant locations worldwide. Its methodology states that the figure is based on data supplied by acquiring institutions and other third parties as of June 30, 2025, and includes an estimated 64 million locations reached through payment facilitators.

The number describes Visa’s established acceptance footprint. It does not measure how many customers have activated the Mesh service, or how much they have spent through it.

The geographical distinction also matters. A payment network’s international acceptance does not establish where a particular programme can enrol customers. Eligible markets, live apps and account requirements will determine which consumers can access the new service.

The deal builds on existing crypto payment infrastructure

Visa has already been connecting stablecoin balances to its merchant network. In April 2025, it announced a card-issuing product with Stripe-owned Bridge that allowed developers to offer stablecoin-linked Visa cards. Bridge would deduct funds from a customer’s stablecoin balance and convert them into fiat for merchant payments.

By March 2026, Visa said Bridge-enabled cards were live in 18 countries, with expansion to more than 100 countries planned by the end of the year. That announcement also referenced Visa’s 175 million-plus merchant locations.

Mesh brings experience from other payment integrations. PayPal’s Pay with Crypto terms identify Mesh as the provider that accesses an eligible wallet on the customer’s instruction, arranges the required PYUSD funding or conversion, and transfers the stablecoin to PayPal. PayPal then converts the proceeds into fiat for the merchant.

Other companies have pursued spending directly from existing wallets. Oobit announced DePay in October 2025, describing payments from supported self-custody wallets without prefunding, with merchants receiving local currency through Visa infrastructure.

Oobit’s developer documentation also describes an embedded payments product in which it manages identity checks, issuance and fiat settlement for wallet providers. Those precedents place the Mesh agreement within an existing market for making digital balances easier to spend.

For Visa, the arrangement offers another way for digital-asset balances to fund transactions through its network. For wallet providers, everyday spending could give customers a reason to return more frequently. The commercial results will depend on how many platforms activate the service and whether customers use it repeatedly.

Availability and payment costs remain to be detailed

Mesh has directed interested platforms to register for further information and says consumer access will come through participating wallets as they go live. Its public materials do not yet provide a complete launch schedule or a device-by-device availability list.

A full assessment will also require the programme’s supported assets, eligible countries, conversion charges, spending limits and refund terms. An easier checkout does not, by itself, show what a customer will pay to convert and spend a balance.

Product-specific terms will matter. Mesh’s separate crypto payments page advertises zero chargebacks because that service processes crypto transfers rather than card transactions. That description cannot establish the dispute arrangements for the Visa programme.

The next practical milestone is a participating app announcing that customers can use the service, with clear eligibility rules and pricing. That will allow consumers to judge how much convenience the integration adds and what it costs to use.
