The proof-of-attendance pioneer is winding down after years of adoption by Coinbase, American Express and major brands.

POAP, the blockchain-based attendance-badge platform used by Coinbase and American Express, is shutting down after more than five years, co-founder Isabel Gonzalez announced August 3, 2026. The company had already stopped onboarding new issuers and moved its platform into maintenance mode on March 16.

Coinbase integrated POAP support into its wallet, while American Express used POAP collectibles in major consumer-facing campaigns, including activations around the U.S. Open and NBA 2K.

The contrast between high-profile adoption and the platform’s eventual wind-down underscores a broader challenge for Web3: corporate experimentation with blockchain does not necessarily translate into a sustainable standalone business.

From Ethereum hackathon to Web3 infrastructure

POAP’s story began at ETHDenver in 2019, where its founders introduced the concept of blockchain-based proof of attendance.

The idea was straightforward: instead of receiving a conventional souvenir or event credential, participants could receive a digital collectible permanently associated with an experience.

POAPs became common at Ethereum conferences, hackathons, DAO gatherings, online communities and other Web3 events.

Over time, the collectibles evolved beyond simple attendance records, with communities using them for recognition, access and loyalty.

According to The Defiant, POAP had minted more than 6.7 million badges through more than 37,000 issuers by 2023.

Its corporate reach included brands such as Adidas and Porsche, demonstrating that the concept had moved well beyond its original crypto-native audience.

The project also attracted significant venture backing. In 2022, POAP raised $10 million in a seed round led by Archetype, with participation from investors including Sapphire Sport, Collab+Currency, Protocol Labs and MetaCartel Ventures.

For a period, POAP represented one of the clearest examples of NFTs being used as a utility rather than simply as tradable digital art.

Coinbase and Amex showed the model’s potential

The project’s partnerships with major companies made its eventual shutdown more striking.

Coinbase Wallet announced POAP support in December 2022, giving users another way to interact with blockchain-based attendance collectibles through one of the industry’s most prominent wallet platforms.

POAP itself later highlighted Coinbase-related campaigns, including collectibles associated with sporting events and other community moments.

American Express went even further with consumer-facing experiments.

The payments giant used POAP technology for activations at events including the Austin City Limits music festival, the NBA 2K23 Lab experience in New York and the U.S. Open.

In 2023, Amex released multiple POAP collectibles for attendees of the U.S. Open golf tournament.

“We believe that Web3 applications will continue to grow as the technology improves.”

Lindsay Ulrey, American Express vice president of global brand sponsorships and experiential marketing.

American Express’s own terms for its collectibles also explicitly identified POAP Inc. as the service used to mint the Amex digital collectibles, providing primary-source confirmation of the relationship.

Those partnerships demonstrated that established companies saw value in blockchain-based digital memories.

Growth hit a ceiling

POAP’s March announcement provided the clearest explanation for why the original platform could no longer justify continued active development.

Co-founder and general manager Isabel Gonzalez said the platform had established a clear niche but struggled to expand beyond it.

Beginning March 16, new issuers could no longer access POAP’s issuer interfaces, while existing issuers, collectors and integrations were expected to remain operational. The team also stopped active development of the existing platform.

Gonzalez said the experience of operating POAP had convinced the team that digital collectibles remained an emerging technology whose existing tools were constrained by the infrastructure on which they were built.

The team subsequently said it wanted to build a more open standard for digital collectibles, potentially allowing the lessons and assets from POAP’s first iteration to inform a new generation of infrastructure.

What POAP’s collapse means for crypto

The significance of POAP’s shutdown extends beyond one NFT project. For investors and industry observers, the story is a reminder that adoption alone is not the same as product-market fit.

POAP secured integrations, brand partnerships and millions of digital collectibles, yet those achievements were not sufficient to create the level of sustainable expansion required to keep the original platform in active development.

The POAP model solved a genuine problem: giving people verifiable digital records of participation. It was simple enough for brands to experiment with and native enough to crypto to become part of Web3 culture.

A collectible that users appreciate does not necessarily become a recurring financial product. And a brand campaign that successfully distributes thousands of digital assets does not automatically create a durable ecosystem of paying customers.

POAP’s official website still describes the project as a protocol for turning memories into digital mementos and identifies organizations including Coinbase among its users.

Its help center likewise describes POAP as infrastructure for creating and storing digital memories, with the collectibles existing as blockchain NFTs.

POAP helped establish the idea that blockchain could preserve moments rather than merely move money or trade assets.

Its legacy may ultimately be less about the company that operated the platform and more about the infrastructure and design principles its founders take into their next project.

For crypto investors, that makes the shutdown less a story about the death of digital collectibles than a case study in what happens when a compelling Web3 use case reaches the limits of its first-generation business model.
