MARA Holdings reported a $611 million net loss, or $1.60 per share, for the second quarter, reversing an $808 million profit a year earlier and badly missing Wall Street’s forecast of roughly $0.35 per share in earnings, as falling Bitcoin prices dragged down the value of its treasury, which shrank 29% year-over-year to 35,577 BTC.

The results came alongside a combined 581 BTC transfer by MARA and Riot Platforms to custodian NYDIG, a move analysts often watch as an early signal of potential sales.

MARA misses expectations as treasury holdings decline

MARA Holdings, the world’s largest publicly traded Bitcoin mining company by market capitalization, reported second-quarter revenue of $174.9 million, representing a 27% decline from the same period last year. The figure fell well below analysts’ consensus estimate of approximately $208.4 million.

The company recorded a net loss of $611 million, or $1.60 per share, reversing the $808 million profit reported during the same quarter in 2025. Analysts had expected earnings of roughly $0.35 per share, making the results one of the company’s weakest quarterly performances in recent years.

A major contributor to the loss was approximately $343 million in unrealized mark-to-market losses tied to the valuation of digital assets held on MARA’s balance sheet. These accounting adjustments reflect fluctuations in Bitcoin prices rather than operational mining performance.

Despite the disappointing financial results, MARA actually increased Bitcoin production by 3% year-over-year, mining 2,422 BTC during the quarter. However, the average market price of Bitcoin during the reporting period declined by approximately 28%, significantly reducing the value of mined coins and treasury assets.

The Mara Bitcoin treasury also contracted sharply. Total holdings stood at 35,577 BTC, down 29% from 49,951 BTC a year earlier.

Of those holdings:

  • 26,307 BTC remain unrestricted.
  • 4,742 BTC have been loaned out.
  • 4,528 BTC are pledged as collateral.

These figures suggest MARA has increasingly deployed its digital assets to support financing and operational strategies instead of simply holding Bitcoin on its balance sheet.

NYDIG transfers spark fresh market speculation

Alongside its earnings announcement, blockchain tracking data revealed fresh Bitcoin transfers involving two of America’s largest mining companies.

MARA transferred 200 BTC, valued at roughly $12.9 million, to institutional Bitcoin custodian NYDIG. Around the same time, Riot Platforms moved another 381 BTC, worth approximately $24.5 million, bringing the combined total to 581 BTC in a single day.

Although deposits into NYDIG do not confirm an immediate sale, analysts frequently monitor such transactions because the custodian provides institutional liquidity services that enable large Bitcoin holders to execute trades without creating significant volatility on public exchanges.

The movement has attracted additional attention because Riot has previously followed a similar pattern.

Earlier this year, Riot transferred 500 BTC to NYDIG before subsequently selling Bitcoin as part of broader efforts to strengthen its balance sheet and finance investments in AI-focused infrastructure.

Industry analysts have long noted that miners increasingly rely on treasury management strategies to fund expansion while navigating periods of compressed mining profitability.

According to TheMinerMag, miner selling activity often increases when profit margins narrow after Bitcoin price declines and rising operational costs.

The latest transfers therefore reinforce concerns that additional Bitcoin sales could emerge if market conditions remain challenging.

Mining firms accelerate shift toward AI infrastructure

Beyond the earnings figures, MARA’s latest report highlights a broader transformation taking place throughout the Bitcoin mining industry.

While digital asset prices remain a key revenue driver, many mining companies are increasingly repositioning themselves as providers of high-performance computing infrastructure.

MARA reported that its energized hashrate increased 22% year-over-year to 70.3 EH/s, demonstrating continued investment in mining capacity despite weaker financial performance.

The company’s cost per petahash per day also improved by 4%, reaching $27.70, indicating operational efficiencies even as overall profitability weakened.

During its investor presentation, management emphasized continued expansion into digital infrastructure and AI-related compute services designed to generate more predictable revenue streams that are less dependent on Bitcoin price movements.

This strategic direction follows MARA’s earlier decision to reduce its workforce by approximately 15%, part of a wider restructuring initiative aimed at positioning the company for long-term growth beyond traditional Bitcoin mining.

Riot Platforms has adopted a similar strategy by investing heavily in power infrastructure and data center development, reflecting an industry-wide shift toward diversified computing businesses.

As Fred Thiel, Chairman and CEO of MARA Holdings, has previously stated, the company aims to build “a vertically integrated digital energy and infrastructure business,” emphasizing long-term resilience beyond mining cycles.

Bitcoin miners face a critical period

The Mara Bitcoin treasury remains one of the largest corporate Bitcoin holdings globally, but its declining size reflects the financial pressures affecting even the industry’s biggest players.

Bitcoin mining has become significantly more competitive following the network’s halving event, which reduced block rewards while energy costs and capital expenditures have continued to rise.

Market participants will now closely watch whether the recent NYDIG deposits eventually translate into disclosed Bitcoin sales.

If additional liquidations occur, they could add short-term selling pressure to the market, although institutional custody transfers alone should not be interpreted as confirmation that sales are imminent.

At the same time, investors are increasingly evaluating whether diversified infrastructure businesses—including AI hosting and high-performance computing—can provide mining companies with more stable earnings during periods of Bitcoin price volatility.

For now, the Mara Bitcoin treasury remains central to the company’s financial position, but the latest earnings illustrate how closely miner profitability continues to track Bitcoin’s market performance.

As the industry evolves, the Mara Bitcoin treasury strategy, combined with its expansion into AI infrastructure, could determine whether the company successfully navigates the next phase of the digital asset market.

Investors will be watching closely to see whether the Mara Bitcoin treasury becomes a long-term strategic asset or a source of continued balance-sheet volatility. With market conditions still uncertain, the future direction of the Mara Bitcoin treasury will remain one of the most closely watched indicators across the Bitcoin mining sector.
