Distributed Ledger Repo Delivers Powerful $8 Trillion July Run as Institutional Blockchain Adoption Accelerates

Distributed Ledger Repo has hit another major milestone after Broadridge Financial Solutions revealed that its blockchain-based repo platform processed $8 trillion in transactions during July, underscoring the rapidly expanding role of distributed ledger technology in institutional finance.

Distributed Ledger Repo recorded an average daily volume of $365 billion during July, representing a 28% year-over-year increase as financial institutions continued shifting more funding and collateral-management activity onto distributed ledger infrastructure.

The latest figures point to a market moving beyond blockchain experimentation and toward large-scale production use.

Distributed Ledger Repo signals an institutional shift

The latest surge puts Distributed Ledger Repo firmly at the center of the institutional tokenization narrative. Rather than forcing banks and financial firms to abandon existing trading and post-trade infrastructure, DLR is designed to connect blockchain-based settlement with established financial workflows.

Repo transactions are a critical part of global financial markets. Institutions use them to obtain short-term funding by selling securities while agreeing to repurchase them later.

The process depends heavily on efficient collateral movement, accurate records and rapid settlement.

Broadridge’s Distributed Ledger Repo uses distributed ledger technology and smart contracts to automate the repo lifecycle, synchronize transaction records and improve collateral mobility.

The company says the infrastructure can reduce reconciliation requirements, settlement costs, disputes and operational risks.

Horacio Barakat, Broadridge’s Global Head of Digital Innovation, previously said the company was seeing tokenized finance enter “a new phase of maturity,” with institutions incorporating distributed ledger technology into everyday market activity.

Distributed Ledger Repo maintains $350 billion-plus daily volumes

July was not an isolated spike for Distributed Ledger Repo. The platform has maintained extraordinary volumes throughout 2026.

In January, DLR averaged $365 billion per day and processed $7.3 trillion for the month, with average daily volume up 508% year over year.

March followed with approximately $8 trillion in volume and a $354 billion daily average. April then reached $368 billion per day, while May generated $7.2 trillion at an average of $362 billion.

June added another $7.5 trillion, averaging $357 billion per day. Broadridge said June’s daily average was 68% higher than a year earlier.

That consistency makes the latest Distributed Ledger Repo milestone more significant. The platform is not merely registering occasional blockchain transactions; it is sustaining hundreds of billions of dollars in institutional repo activity every day.

Distributed Ledger Repo targets a critical liquidity problem

One of the most compelling arguments for Distributed Ledger Repo is its potential impact on intraday liquidity.

Research conducted by Broadridge with Finadium found that using intraday DLR for 15% of activity could reduce intraday liquidity buffer requirements by between 8% and 17%.

For large financial institutions, even modest improvements in liquidity efficiency can translate into substantial capital benefits.

The technology also aims to improve collateral mobility. Instead of relying on fragmented processes and repeated reconciliations, DLR creates synchronized transaction records that can help counterparties track financing and collateral movements more efficiently.

Mark Wendland, chief operating officer at DRW, highlighted the infrastructure challenge facing traditional markets, saying DLR provides the “proper technological infrastructure” needed to maximize capital use.

Distributed Ledger Repo expands beyond traditional Repo

Broadridge is also using the momentum behind Distributed Ledger Repo to expand its broader tokenization strategy.

The company recently extended the tokenization engine behind DLR to support additional asset classes, including equities, funds, alternative investments and money-market instruments.

Broadridge said its objective is to allow institutions to operate tokenized and traditional securities through integrated infrastructure rather than isolated digital-asset systems.

Its July Tokenization Pulse Survey found that 84% of financial firms consider tokenization strategically important, while 69% expect to hybridize existing infrastructure instead of replacing it entirely.

That trend could prove crucial for Distributed Ledger Repo. Institutional adoption is unlikely to depend solely on whether blockchain technology works; it will depend on whether banks can deploy it without disrupting existing market operations.

Distributed Ledger Repo becomes a blockchain stress test

The latest Distributed Ledger Repo figures offer a powerful signal for the wider digital-asset industry.

While crypto markets often focus on token prices and retail adoption, repo is core financial plumbing.

The ability to process roughly $8 trillion in monthly activity demonstrates that blockchain technology can increasingly operate behind the scenes in heavily institutionalized markets.

For Broadridge, the challenge now shifts from proving that Distributed Ledger Repo can scale to expanding its network, liquidity-management applications and tokenized asset capabilities.

If July’s $8 trillion milestone continues to be supported by sustained daily volumes, Distributed Ledger Repo could become one of the clearest examples yet of blockchain moving from an experimental technology into the operating infrastructure of global capital markets.
