Bhutan’s government moves $32.7 million in Bitcoin, adding to 2026’s outflow pattern

The latest sovereign Bitcoin transfer highlights Bhutan’s evolving digital asset strategy, but blockchain data stops short of confirming any sale.

The Bhutan Bitcoin treasury has recorded another major on-chain movement after the Royal Government of Bhutan transferred 490.87 Bitcoin, valued at approximately $32.74 million, to newly created wallets over the past 24 hours.

The transaction, first flagged by blockchain analytics platform Onchain Lens, is the latest in a string of high-value transfers from government-linked Bitcoin addresses throughout 2026. While the movement has fueled speculation about potential profit-taking, analysts caution that the available blockchain evidence does not prove the government has sold its Bitcoin.

Bhutan remains one of the world’s largest sovereign Bitcoin holders thanks to years of state-backed mining powered by renewable hydroelectric energy rather than market purchases or seized assets.

Largest transfer accounts for nearly the entire $32.7 million movement

According to Onchain Lens, the dominant transaction involved 485 BTC worth roughly $32.31 million, representing almost the entirety of the day’s transfers. Several smaller transactions made up the remaining balance, all originating from wallets attributed to the Royal Government of Bhutan.

Crucially, the recipient addresses have not been identified as cryptocurrency exchanges or institutional trading firms. That distinction matters because transferring Bitcoin to a fresh wallet is not the same as executing a sale.

Blockchain analytics firms routinely differentiate between wallet reorganization and liquidation. Until coins reach an exchange or a confirmed counterparty, ownership may still remain with the same entity.

As Arkham Intelligence has repeatedly noted in previous analyses, movements to unlabeled wallets should not automatically be interpreted as selling activity. Instead, they often reflect custody restructuring, operational security, or treasury management practices.

The latest Bhutan Bitcoin treasury movement therefore confirms that government-linked coins have changed addresses—but not necessarily hands.

Sovereign Bitcoin transfers have become a recurring pattern in 2026

This is far from an isolated event. The Bhutan Bitcoin treasury has consistently recorded substantial Bitcoin outflows throughout 2026, with blockchain trackers documenting hundreds of millions of dollars in transfers.

On August 18, blockchain monitoring firm Lookonchain reported another transfer of 300 BTC, worth around $19.28 million, from Bhutan-linked wallets to a newly created address. Although Lookonchain described the transaction as a sale, the initial on-chain movement itself only demonstrated a transfer to a fresh wallet rather than a completed disposal.

Earlier in May, Arkham Intelligence reported that cumulative Bitcoin outflows from Bhutan-linked addresses had already exceeded $230 million during 2026. One transaction alone involved 100.44 BTC worth about $8.2 million moving to an unidentified wallet.

Arkham also estimated that Bhutan was averaging close to $50 million in monthly Bitcoin transfers during much of the year.

March proved particularly active. On March 25, government-linked addresses moved 519.7 BTC valued at roughly $36.7 million across two wallets. Onchain Lens identified one recipient as being connected to QCP Capital, a Singapore-based digital asset trading firm, while previous transfers during the same month totaled more than $83 million.

Some historical transfers have ultimately reached counterparties including Binance and Galaxy Digital, according to Arkham. However, analysts continue to emphasize that each transaction must be evaluated independently, as many transfers never reach exchange wallets.

Bhutan’s Bitcoin reserves have evolved since reaching record highs

The repeated transfers have significantly reduced the Bitcoin balance visible in publicly tagged government wallets.

Arkham Intelligence previously revealed that Bhutan controlled more than 13,000 BTC at its peak in October 2024, making the Himalayan nation one of the largest known sovereign Bitcoin holders globally. By late March 2026, the identifiable balance had declined to approximately 4,453 BTC, although analysts warn that tagged wallet balances do not always reflect the government’s total holdings.

“On-chain attribution is constantly evolving,” Arkham has explained in its research, noting that newly discovered wallets can alter estimates of sovereign reserves without any underlying change in ownership.

This nuance is particularly important when assessing the Bhutan Bitcoin treasury. A transfer to an address that has not yet been tagged as government-controlled may temporarily reduce Bhutan’s visible portfolio while the assets remain under state ownership.

As a result, blockchain data provides strong evidence of movement—but not definitive proof of divestment.

Hydropower mining continues to define Bhutan’s Bitcoin strategy

Unlike governments whose Bitcoin reserves originate from criminal asset seizures, the Bhutan Bitcoin treasury was built primarily through state-backed mining operations.

The initiative is overseen by Druk Holding & Investments (DHI), Bhutan’s sovereign investment arm, which has spent years developing mining infrastructure powered almost entirely by the country’s abundant hydroelectric resources. The renewable energy model has allowed Bhutan to accumulate Bitcoin while leveraging surplus electricity generation.

In 2024, DHI expanded its ambitions through a partnership with Bitdeer Technologies, announcing plans to increase mining capacity by an additional 500 megawatts, bringing the planned total to 600 MW.

The strategy has since expanded beyond mining alone. In December 2025, Bhutan unveiled its Bitcoin Development Pledge for Gelephu Mindfulness City, committing up to 10,000 BTC to support the long-term development of the special administrative region.

Implementation is already underway. In July 2026, Gelephu appointed Canadian digital asset manager 3iQ to oversee an undisclosed portion of its treasury, while the city has also introduced fast-track licensing for regulated crypto firms and attracted exchange operator Bitget, which is pursuing a Financial Services Licence.

These initiatives illustrate that the Bhutan Bitcoin treasury is increasingly being positioned not merely as a reserve asset, but as a cornerstone of the country’s broader digital economy.

For now, the latest Bhutan Bitcoin treasury transfer adds another significant chapter to the nation’s sovereign Bitcoin story. Whether the 490.87 BTC ultimately represents portfolio restructuring, institutional settlement, or future liquidity remains unanswered—but blockchain observers will be watching the destination wallets closely.
