Switzerland’s CHFD franc stablecoin sandbox has moved from development into live testing, with financial-market infrastructure operator SIX and payments platform TWINT joining as its two newest participants, bringing the total number of institutions involved to nine.
The expansion brings the number of participating Swiss companies to nine. UBS, PostFinance, Sygnum, Raiffeisen, Zürcher Kantonalbank, Banque Cantonale Vaudoise (BCV), SIX, TWINT and Swiss Stablecoin AG are now testing practical applications for CHFD, a Swiss franc-denominated stablecoin designed to maintain a 1:1 value against the national currency.
The initiative was originally launched in April 2026 by a group of Swiss financial institutions seeking to determine how blockchain technology could be integrated into the country’s existing monetary and financial infrastructure. The latest stage gives those participants an opportunity to test the technology under controlled, realistic conditions rather than simply assessing it on paper.
The Swiss stablecoin sandbox is expected to continue through the end of 2026, giving the participating companies several months to evaluate the results of their experiments.
SIX and TWINT expand the scope of the experiment
The arrival of SIX and TWINT adds two different but strategically important capabilities to the Swiss stablecoin sandbox.
SIX brings experience in financial-market infrastructure, while TWINT adds expertise from Switzerland’s digital-payments sector. Their participation broadens the initiative beyond traditional banking and gives the project a stronger connection to the infrastructure through which financial assets and everyday payments already move.
The companies joining the test are operating CHFD in a protected digital live environment. According to the consortium, the stablecoin has been technically live within the sandbox since the end of June. Its infrastructure is operated by CHFD Infrastruktur AG, a subsidiary of Swiss Stablecoin AG.
The project’s expansion also comes as financial institutions globally grapple with the growing importance of stablecoins. Unlike volatile cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, stablecoins are designed to maintain a relatively stable value by linking their price to assets such as national currencies.
Pascale Bruderer, founder of Swiss Stablecoin AG, has argued that the technology could combine the stability of the Swiss franc with the efficiency of blockchain. In an August interview with Zürcher Kantonalbank, Bruderer said stablecoins can be particularly useful for complex transactions because they combine currency stability with blockchain-based functionality.
Programmable payments become the key test
The Swiss stablecoin sandbox is not simply testing whether CHFD can transfer value from one wallet to another. Its more ambitious objective is to determine whether programmable payments can solve practical problems that conventional payment systems struggle to address efficiently.
One area under examination is online marketplaces. Participants want to determine whether payment conditions embedded directly into transactions could help reduce fraud. Instead of relying entirely on intermediaries or manual processes, programmable money could potentially release funds only when predefined conditions are satisfied.
Event ticketing is another proposed application. The consortium is examining whether programmable payments could help promote fairer access to tickets, potentially addressing situations in which demand significantly exceeds supply.
Public-sector payments are also being considered. The initiative will examine whether programmable digital money can make the distribution of public funds more efficient.
These experiments are important because they shift the stablecoin debate away from simply asking whether digital currencies can move money faster. The bigger question is whether money itself can become programmable and interact automatically with other digital systems.
The project is also testing established institutional applications, including automated transactions between financial institutions and the tokenized settlement of digital assets.
Switzerland tests the limits before going mainstream
The Swiss stablecoin sandbox has been deliberately structured as a controlled environment rather than a full commercial launch. That distinction matters because the initiative is designed to identify both opportunities and obstacles before any broader rollout is considered.
When the project was launched in April, UBS said the sandbox would allow participating institutions to test digital financial products under realistic conditions while maintaining safeguards such as a restricted participant group and transaction limits. The goal was to minimize risks while gaining practical experience.
The current Swiss stablecoin sandbox is similarly open-ended. The participating companies are not committing to a commercial launch simply because the technology is being tested. Instead, they are assessing where a CHF stablecoin could create genuine value, what technical and operational challenges remain and which regulatory requirements would need to be addressed.
That cautious approach could prove crucial for Switzerland’s digital-finance ambitions. The country has long positioned itself as a major financial and cryptocurrency hub, but stablecoins introduce questions that extend beyond blockchain technology, including payments infrastructure, compliance, consumer protection and monetary-system design.
Ultimately, the significance of the Swiss stablecoin sandbox may not be determined by whether CHFD becomes a widely used payment token. Its bigger contribution could be the practical evidence it generates about how traditional financial institutions, payment providers and blockchain infrastructure can work together.
For Switzerland, that makes the latest testing phase more than a technology demonstration. It is a real-world experiment in whether programmable, franc-denominated digital money can become part of the country’s future financial infrastructure.
