Kyobo Life and SBI trial yen-won stablecoin transfers that bypass the dollar

The Korea-Japan pilot tested whether institutional money can move, convert and settle directly between yen and won through blockchain-based tokens, potentially cutting out an extra dollar conversion step.

South Korea’s Kyobo Life and Japan’s SBI Group have completed a proof-of-concept for moving money between the two countries by exchanging yen and won stablecoin representations directly, without converting through the U.S. dollar.

The project, which began in July, was conducted with SBI Digital Practice, an SBI Group unit focused on institutional blockchain infrastructure. The companies used the Canton Network’s test environment to simulate the transfer, foreign-exchange and settlement processes involved in moving institutional funds between Japan and South Korea.

Instead of following a conventional route in which yen is converted into dollars before being converted into won, the pilot tested a direct exchange between yen-denominated and won-denominated stablecoin representations.

That distinction is important for institutions because every additional conversion or intermediary can introduce another processing step, cost and exposure to currency movements. Kyobo Life said the test demonstrated the potential to simplify those processes, although the companies have not published specific figures showing how much time or money could ultimately be saved.

The yen-won stablecoin experiment also covered transaction tracking and the handling of digital assets transferred from overseas alongside related settlement funds in South Korea.

A Kyobo Life official said the proof-of-concept confirmed the “technical feasibility and efficiency” of cross-border institutional transfers using stablecoins and blockchain technology. The company said it plans to expand cooperation with SBI as Web3 financial infrastructure develops.

Canton Network puts the settlement model through its paces

The yen-won stablecoin test was not conducted using live commercial stablecoins or actual institutional money.

Instead, Kyobo Life and SBI relied on test tokens inside the Canton Network environment. TokenPost reported that no real funds or actual stablecoins were transferred during the exercise, making the project a technical and operational demonstration rather than a live payment corridor.

Canton Network is designed for financial institutions and supports blockchain-based transactions where privacy and controlled access are important. Its use in the pilot allowed the companies to examine how a cross-border transaction could be transferred, converted and settled while transaction information remained trackable.

The companies also tested procedures for identifying and monitoring transaction data in real time, as well as an operating model for handling digital assets arriving from overseas and the corresponding settlement amounts within South Korea.

Kyobo Life described the project as the first time a South Korean insurer had verified the full process of cross-border institutional fund transfer, currency conversion and settlement using this type of digital-token structure. That is a company characterization of the project, rather than an independent regulatory designation.

The significance of the test therefore lies less in the movement of money today and more in the infrastructure being examined for potential future use.

SBI is building a broader Japan-Korea stablecoin framework

The latest yen-won stablecoin pilot also arrives as SBI develops a separate cross-border payment initiative with South Korean blockchain infrastructure company Nodeinfra.

The initiative, known as Project Musubi, was announced in August and is intended to connect Japanese and Korean financial institutions through the Canton Network. Its proposed architecture includes payment-versus-payment settlement and distributed netting, with the initial development phase relying on test tokens rather than commercial stablecoins.

SBI Digital Practice is expected to work on the integration layer connecting Japanese financial systems to the network and supporting Japanese financial institutions, while Nodeinfra is developing the core settlement protocol, smart contracts and developer tools for the Korean side.

Project Musubi and the Kyobo Life pilot are separate initiatives. The Kyobo project specifically tested an institutional transfer structure involving the insurer and SBI Digital Practice, while Musubi is a broader infrastructure-development effort involving Nodeinfra.

The regulatory environment remains a key factor before any such system can become a commercial payment rail. Japan has already moved further on yen-denominated stablecoin infrastructure, while South Korea is still developing its framework for regulated won-backed stablecoins. Project Musubi’s initial reliance on test tokens reflects that regulatory uncertainty.

Kyobo and SBI target wider digital-asset cooperation

For Kyobo Life, the yen-won stablecoin project is part of a broader relationship with SBI that could extend beyond cross-border payments.

The two companies said they plan to explore additional cooperation involving digital-asset conversion between Japan and South Korea, links to asset management and potential business models based on actual transaction structures.

That means the next stage will depend on more than proving that two tokenized currencies can technically exchange on blockchain infrastructure. Regulatory approval, compliant stablecoin issuance, institutional connectivity and operational safeguards will all have to develop before a test environment can become a production financial network.

For now, the yen-won stablecoin experiment establishes a technical reference point: institutions in Japan and South Korea can model a direct currency-to-currency settlement process without placing the U.S. dollar between the two sides.

The yen-won stablecoin model remains a proof-of-concept rather than a live commercial settlement system, but its completion gives Kyobo Life and SBI a working framework from which to examine broader digital-asset and Web3 financial applications.

The companies have not announced a commercial launch date for the tested structure. Their immediate focus is further cooperation and development as the regulatory and financial infrastructure needed for institutional stablecoin settlement evolves.
