Thai police have arrested a Chinese national accused of managing 133 bank and exchange accounts that moved more than $74 million, ending a three-year run in which he allegedly repainted his car, used fake plates and hopped between luxury condos.

The arrest follows an investigation involving several Thai immigration officers and marks another development in Thailand’s efforts to combat cryptocurrency-related financial crimes and transnational money laundering.

Crypto laundering ring allegedly processed $74 million through 133 accounts

According to Chinese authorities, Wu played a central role in a criminal network that relied on bank accounts and cryptocurrency exchanges to move funds suspected of originating from illegal activities.

Investigators allege that Wu acted as an account mule, recruiting individuals to establish financial accounts that could be used to receive, transfer, and conceal illicit proceeds.

The suspected Crypto laundering ring reportedly operated through 133 accounts under Wu’s management, processing transactions exceeding $74 million.

Rather than relying on a single account, the alleged operation used multiple financial channels to facilitate transfers and obscure the movement of funds. Authorities believe the arrangement helped the organization conduct transactions while making the underlying financial activity more difficult to trace.

Wu’s suspected responsibilities extended beyond maintaining accounts. Investigators allege that he recruited other individuals to open bank and cryptocurrency exchange accounts for the organization.

The case highlights how financial accounts held by intermediaries can become important components of cross-border money laundering schemes.

However, the reported $74 million represents the value of transactions allegedly processed through the accounts, rather than a confirmed amount of criminal proceeds recovered by authorities.

Suspect used fake documents and frequent moves to evade arrest

Thai Immigration Police’s third division reported that Wu entered Thailand on a tourist visa in December 2019 and subsequently remained in the country after his permission to stay expired.

Authorities believe his continued presence in Thailand was connected to an effort to avoid detection and possible extradition to China.

Investigators examining the alleged Crypto laundering ring discovered that Wu had taken several measures to conceal his identity and whereabouts.

According to Thai media reports cited in the original story, he frequently changed residences, moving between rental houses and luxury condominiums in different communities.

The suspect also allegedly changed the color of his vehicle, used fraudulent license plates, and carried forged documents to complicate efforts to identify and track him.

These measures reportedly allowed Wu to avoid remaining at any particular location for an extended period.

Despite those precautions, Thai police eventually located him at a luxury residence in Bangkok’s Ramkhamhaeng area.

Officers arrested Wu at the property, bringing his prolonged attempt to avoid authorities to an end.

At the time of his arrest, his visa had reportedly been expired for more than three years.

Although the investigation connects Wu to a suspected Crypto laundering ring, the allegations concerning his involvement in the wider financial operation remain subject to the applicable legal process.

Thailand prepares charges and extradition proceedings

Following the arrest, Thai authorities are preparing immigration-related charges against Wu for remaining in the country beyond the permitted duration of his tourist visa.

Police also intend to coordinate with Chinese authorities regarding his extradition.

The extradition process could allow Chinese investigators to pursue allegations concerning the suspected Crypto laundering ring and Wu’s reported involvement in facilitating financial transfers for a transnational criminal organization.

The case involves two distinct legal matters: Wu’s alleged violation of Thai immigration rules and the financial crime allegations raised by Chinese authorities.

While Thai officials can pursue immigration charges under domestic law, any transfer of the suspect to China would require coordination between the countries’ relevant authorities.

The original report did not provide a timetable for extradition or specify additional charges that Chinese authorities might pursue.

It also did not establish whether the assets associated with the alleged operation had been frozen, confiscated, or recovered.

For investigators, the arrest represents a significant development in efforts to locate an individual accused of managing financial infrastructure for an international criminal network.

However, Wu’s arrest does not, by itself, establish the full extent of the alleged operation or determine the criminal responsibility of other individuals connected to the accounts.

Crypto laundering ring arrest follows wider Thai crackdown

Wu’s arrest comes amid intensified scrutiny of cryptocurrency-related financial crimes in Thailand.

In June 2026, Thailand’s Department of Special Investigation dismantled a separate cryptocurrency mining-related money laundering operation that authorities said processed more than $300 million annually.

That operation was reportedly connected to proceeds generated through online scams and gambling platforms.

Although the June case and Wu’s arrest involve different alleged criminal activities, both reflect the attention Thai authorities are placing on financial operations involving digital assets.

The latest Crypto laundering ring investigation also demonstrates how traditional banking infrastructure and cryptocurrency exchanges can be used together in suspected money laundering arrangements.

Accounts opened through recruited individuals can provide several channels for moving funds, particularly when transactions involve participants operating across national borders.

For Thai authorities, the immediate priority is completing the immigration proceedings and coordinating with China over the suspect’s possible extradition.

The reported dismantling of the separate June operation, alongside Wu’s arrest, underscores the continuing challenge of investigating financial crimes involving multiple jurisdictions and payment systems.

The outcome of the current case will depend on further legal proceedings and cooperation between the relevant authorities.

For now, the arrest of the alleged Crypto laundering ring operator marks another enforcement action against suspected cryptocurrency-enabled financial crime in Southeast Asia.
