Singapore police say they have identified more than 383 potential crypto scam victims and prevented an estimated $17.4 million in losses, in a two-month operation run with eight digital payment token providers. The Singapore Police Force announced the results on November 5, covering September 1 to October 31.

Blockchain intelligence helps identify potential victims

A major component of the operation was the use of advanced blockchain analytics to track suspicious cryptocurrency transactions and identify individuals exposed to fraudulent schemes.

The police worked with blockchain intelligence companies Chainalysis and TRM Labs, using their analytical capabilities to examine transaction patterns and uncover activities associated with different forms of financial deception.

The investigation covered several fraud categories, including government official impersonation, investment fraud and job-related scams.

In government impersonation schemes, criminals typically pose as public officials or representatives of legitimate institutions to convince victims that they must transfer money or cryptocurrency to resolve fabricated legal or financial problems.

Investment fraud, meanwhile, often involves promises of unusually high returns, fake trading platforms and manipulated investment opportunities designed to persuade individuals to deposit increasing amounts of money.

Job scams use another approach, attracting victims with seemingly legitimate employment opportunities before demanding payments for registration, training or other fabricated requirements.

These methods show how a Crypto scam can exploit trust, financial expectations and the growing popularity of digital assets.

By combining blockchain transaction analysis with information supplied by participating platforms, investigators were better positioned to identify suspicious transfers and contact individuals before their financial exposure increased.

The approach also demonstrates why blockchain transparency alone is not enough to eliminate cryptocurrency fraud. Although transactions recorded on public blockchains can be traced, identifying the individuals behind wallet addresses and reaching potential victims often requires cooperation between analytics providers, exchanges and law enforcement.

International cooperation expands the investigation

The fifth operation also extended beyond Singapore, recognising that cryptocurrency transactions and fraudulent networks frequently operate across national borders.

The Cyber Command shared blockchain intelligence with international law enforcement partners, including the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Australia’s New South Wales Police Force and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

This intelligence-sharing arrangement helped authorities identify 32 potential victims in other jurisdictions. The information enabled intervention efforts to take place before additional financial losses occurred.

The international dimension is particularly important because criminals can use cryptocurrency platforms, digital wallets and online communication channels across multiple countries to move funds and target victims.

A fraudulent investment scheme may be promoted in one country, receive payments from individuals in several others and transfer the proceeds through wallets operating across different blockchain networks. Such arrangements can complicate investigations when authorities work independently.

The Singapore operation illustrates how cross-border intelligence can help close these gaps, allowing investigators to identify suspicious activity and coordinate responses across jurisdictions.

In its November 5 statement, the Singapore Police Force stressed the importance of maintaining strong relationships between private-sector companies and enforcement agencies.

“The outcome underscores the importance of sustained public-private partnership as well as timely cross-border intelligence sharing in combating scams,” the police said.

The force added that Cyber Command intends to expand its partner network and strengthen cooperation with foreign law enforcement agencies across additional jurisdictions.

Fifth operation builds on earlier anti-scam success

The latest crackdown follows four previous joint operations aimed at preventing cryptocurrency-related financial losses.

In September, Singapore police announced that the fourth operation, conducted between July 1 and August 31, had identified more than 355 potential victims and prevented losses exceeding $8.94 million.

That exercise also involved Coinbase, Coinhako, DTCPay, Gemini, Independent Reserve, OKX, StraitsX and Upbit, alongside blockchain analytics support from Chainalysis and TRM Labs.

The latest operation produced a substantially higher prevention figure, with more than $17.4 million in potential losses averted. However, the figures represent estimated losses prevented through early intervention, not money recovered and returned to victims.

The repeated exercises suggest that Singapore is placing greater emphasis on proactive fraud prevention rather than relying exclusively on investigations after financial damage has occurred.

For cryptocurrency users, the operation also reinforces the importance of verifying investment opportunities, checking the identity of individuals claiming to represent government agencies and avoiding transfers prompted by suspicious requests.

The Singapore Police Force continues to encourage the public to follow its ACT approach: Add security features, Check for warning signs and Tell the authorities and others about suspicious activities.

As digital asset adoption continues to create new opportunities for financial activity, coordinated enforcement, stronger platform cooperation and public awareness will remain essential.

The latest Crypto scam prevention exercise shows that early detection can make a significant difference, particularly when blockchain intelligence and international cooperation are used to reach potential victims before their money disappears.
