Treasury Secretary Bessent tells Congress government lacks authority to bail out Bitcoin

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on October 8, 2026 that the United States will probably seize about $1 billion of Iran-linked crypto this week, without naming any wallets, exchanges or the legal route.

He told Newsmax host Greta Van Susteren at the network’s NPolicy Summit in Washington that Washington knows where the funds are. In May 2026 he said the US had already seized about $1 billion.

Bessent interview with Greta Van Susteren, during which he described Washington’s approach as an “absolute isolation campaign,” encompassing financial restrictions.

The proposed action comes as Washington expands its efforts to restrict Iran’s access to international financial networks, including cryptocurrency exchanges and other digital asset infrastructure. The administration has increasingly targeted entities suspected of helping Iranian institutions circumvent American sanctions.

“We’re probably gonna seize a billion dollars of crypto this week,” Bessent told Newsmax host Greta Van Susteren at the summit.

The announcement signals another potential escalation in the US campaign against Iran’s financial networks. However, the Treasury secretary’s remarks do not establish that the assets have already been seized or clarify whether the proposed operation represents an additional enforcement action beyond previously reported seizures.

US targets $1 billion in iran-linked crypto seizure

Bessent said authorities knew where the cryptocurrency was held and were working to isolate the assets as part of a broader strategy to restrict Iran’s financial activities.

“We know where it is and we are isolating them,” Bessent said during his appearance at the summit.

The Treasury secretary described the administration’s approach as an intensification of its earlier sanctions strategy, suggesting that Washington was moving beyond traditional financial restrictions toward a more comprehensive effort to limit Iran’s international economic connections.

“We did have a maximum pressure campaign. Now we have an absolute isolation campaign, and it’s working,” Bessent said.

The remarks indicate that the proposed iran-linked crypto seizure forms part of a wider effort rather than an isolated cryptocurrency enforcement action.

Nevertheless, important details remain undisclosed. Bessent did not identify the digital asset exchanges, wallet addresses or individuals associated with the targeted funds. He also did not explain whether authorities would obtain control through court-authorised forfeiture proceedings, sanctions enforcement or cooperation with cryptocurrency platforms capable of freezing assets.

The distinction matters because identifying a cryptocurrency wallet does not automatically give authorities control over its contents. Depending on the assets and circumstances, enforcement may require legal proceedings, cooperation from intermediaries or other mechanisms to prevent transactions.

The administration has not publicly clarified whether the $1 billion represents cryptocurrency already identified for enforcement or assets that have been frozen but not formally forfeited.

Previous Iranian crypto seizures raise questions over totals

The latest announcement follows earlier statements from Bessent about American efforts to confiscate cryptocurrency allegedly connected to Iran.

In May 2026, the Treasury secretary said the United States had seized approximately $1 billion in Iranian cryptocurrency. He described the action by saying authorities had “just outright grabbed the wallets.”

However, a subsequent Treasury communication cited an earlier estimate of nearly $500 million, creating uncertainty about the total value of assets seized or frozen through the campaign.

The latest announcement introduces another question: whether the proposed iran-linked crypto seizure would bring additional assets under US control or involve cryptocurrency already included in previous estimates.

Bessent did not address that discrepancy during his October 8 appearance.

The difference between seized, frozen and identified assets is significant when assessing the scale of government enforcement. Cryptocurrency can be rendered inaccessible through a stablecoin issuer’s freezing mechanism without the government necessarily taking ownership of the underlying funds. Other digital assets may require different enforcement methods.

In July, the Treasury announced wallet-related sanctions that reportedly resulted in approximately $130 million being frozen. The action demonstrated how sanctions enforcement can extend to cryptocurrency addresses and digital asset infrastructure.

Washington has also expanded its restrictions on Iranian cryptocurrency exchanges, alleging that some platforms have facilitated financial activity connected to sanctioned entities.

These developments provide context for the latest announcement, although they do not establish whether the assets targeted in the proposed operation overlap with those affected by earlier measures.

Treasury expands pressure on Iran’s crypto infrastructure

The potential iran-linked crypto seizure comes amid a broader campaign to disrupt the financial networks that Washington says help Iran evade sanctions.

In September, the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned BitBank, a digital asset venture that the department said was controlled by Iranian financier Babak Zanjani. The action also targeted the company’s developer and three associates of Zanjani.

According to the Treasury, the entities formed part of Iran’s digital asset infrastructure for sanctions evasion.

Bessent used the announcement to reinforce the administration’s position that cryptocurrency transactions are not beyond the reach of American enforcement agencies.

“Today’s designations of Iranian digital asset infrastructure make perfectly clear that efforts to finance the Iranian regime using cryptocurrencies are not beyond OFAC’s reach,” Bessent said in the Treasury Department’s September 17 announcement.

The measures form part of a wider US government strategy to restrict Iran’s ability to move money through conventional banking channels and digital financial networks.

On October 1, the Treasury announced additional measures under Operation Economic Outcast, targeting the A7 Network, which it described as a shadow banking network with ties to Russia that Iran had used to evade sanctions. The department also announced proposed restrictions and financial intelligence measures intended to disrupt the network’s operations.

Together, these actions illustrate Washington’s increasing focus on the infrastructure that enables cross-border financial transactions, including digital asset services and intermediaries.

However, the existence of sanctions against particular companies or individuals does not establish that every cryptocurrency wallet associated with Iran is involved in illegal activity. Specific allegations and enforcement measures depend on the evidence and legal authorities applicable to each case.

What the proposed iran-linked crypto seizure means for crypto

The proposed iran-linked crypto seizure highlights the growing importance of digital assets in international sanctions enforcement.

Cryptocurrency transactions can be recorded on public blockchains, allowing investigators to trace transfers between addresses and identify patterns that may warrant further investigation. Yet blockchain records do not automatically reveal the identity of every wallet owner or establish the purpose behind a transaction.

Authorities may need information from exchanges, stablecoin issuers and other service providers to connect blockchain activity to identifiable individuals or organisations. Where assets are held in self-custody wallets, obtaining control can present additional legal and technical challenges.

Stablecoins introduce another dimension because some issuers can freeze tokens at specific addresses when responding to lawful requests or enforcing applicable restrictions. Such interventions can prevent transfers, although freezing an asset is not necessarily equivalent to permanently confiscating it.

For cryptocurrency businesses, the latest announcement reinforces the importance of sanctions screening, transaction monitoring and compliance procedures. Platforms operating across multiple jurisdictions may face competing legal obligations, particularly when transactions involve sanctioned individuals or entities.
