Coinbase to launch prediction markets and tokenized stocks, Bloomberg reports

Coinbase plans to launch a prediction market platform and tokenized stock trading, according to sources familiar with the matter who spoke to Bloomberg.

The crypto exchange is expected to unveil details during a Wednesday livestream, though the company has not confirmed which products will be announced.

The Coinbase prediction market push follows nearly a month after tech researcher Jane Manchun Wong spotted landing pages for tokenized equities and Kalshi powered prediction markets on Coinbase’s platform. As of now, these products have yet to be officially launched.

Coinbase partners with Kalshi to join the US prediction market coalition.

Bloomberg reported that Coinbase has joined the Coalition for Prediction Markets (CPM), a coalition of US prediction market operators spearheaded by Kalshi and Crypto.com.

Coinbase’s chief policy officer, Faryar Shizad, emphasized that “prediction markets democratize fact finding and the pursuit of truth,” highlighting the strategic role a Coinbase prediction market could play for retail traders.

Kalshi, founded in 2018 by MIT graduates Tarek Mansour and Luana Lopes Lara allows users to trade real world event outcomes as if they were financial assets.

The platform has become a leading prediction market operator alongside Polymarket and Opinion boasting weekly trading volumes around $1 billion according to Dune Analytics data. A Coinbase prediction market would position the exchange at the forefront of this rapidly growing sector.

Interest in prediction markets is surging with weekly volumes recently hitting a record near $4 billion. Despite some skepticism regarding reported figures, Coinbase appears determined to enter this competitive space.

Rival exchanges are also moving quickly: Crypto.com announced a dedicated prediction market platform in October while Gemini, founded by the Winklevoss twins recently secured Commodity Futures Trading Commission approval to offer prediction markets in the US.

A Coinbase prediction market could significantly expand access to these products for US users, reinforcing the company’s mission to deliver global financial freedom.
