Banco do Brasil makes first Latin American investment in Citi’s blockchain-based structured note

Digital Note Investment Puts Banco do Brasil at the Center of a Blockchain Finance Breakthrough

Banco do Brasil has committed $5 million of its own treasury capital to a blockchain-based structured note issued by Citi through Euroclear’s Digital Financial Market Infrastructure platform, the first transaction of its kind involving a Latin American institution, the bank said.

The investment was completed on Aug. 19, with Banco do Brasil participating directly as an investor through its proprietary treasury.

The structured note was issued by Citigroup Global Markets Funding Luxembourg S.C.A. on Euroclear’s D-FMI platform.

Citi Issuer Services, operating through Citibank N.A.’s London branch, acted as the note’s issuance and payment agent.

Digital Note investment replaces fragmented financial processes

The significance of the digital note investment extends beyond the $5 million size of the transaction.

Traditional securities transactions can involve multiple systems, intermediaries and sequential operational processes.

The digitally native structure instead allows the instrument to be issued, registered and administered through blockchain-based infrastructure.

Banco do Brasil said this architecture can integrate participants more efficiently while reducing operational steps and improving transparency and transaction traceability. It could also support faster and more efficient settlement, reconciliation and asset administration.

That makes the digital note investment an important institutional test of whether distributed ledger technology can move from proof-of-concept projects into everyday capital-market infrastructure.

Investment signals institutional confidence

Francisco Lassalvia, Banco do Brasil’s vice president of Wholesale Banking, described financial-market digitization as a long-term structural trend.

“We believe that the digitalization of financial markets represents a long-term structural trend,” Lassalvia said, adding that initiatives such as the transaction can help establish standards, governance and infrastructure for a new generation of digital assets.

The comments highlight why digital note investment is attracting attention from established financial institutions.

Rather than replacing traditional securities outright, blockchain-based instruments could initially operate alongside existing markets while institutions evaluate their efficiency, security and operational resilience.

For Banco do Brasil, the digital note investment also fits into a broader strategy of monitoring emerging technologies and financial infrastructure.

The bank has previously participated in Brazil’s Drex pilot, underscoring its interest in blockchain-related financial applications.

Investment gets a boost from Citi

Citi is also positioning the transaction as part of its broader digital-capital-markets strategy.

Roksolana Dushynska, Citi’s Global Markets Issuance Equity Structuring Manager, said the latest issuance reinforces Citi’s role in accelerating digital capital markets.

According to Dushynska, distributed ledger technology can improve efficiency, transparency and accessibility across capital markets.

Her comments reinforce the bullish case for digital note investment, particularly as major banks and market infrastructures explore tokenization and digitally native securities.

This Investment is not an Inferno drainer story

The growing interest in digital note investment should not be confused with the separate security risks facing crypto users.

Recent reporting has linked the Inferno Drainer ecosystem to a phishing attack in which a Hyperliquid user reportedly lost about $550,000 in USDC after visiting a counterfeit website promoted through a Google sponsored advertisement.

Security firm Salus attributed the infrastructure to a drainer-as-a-service network associated with Inferno.

That incident illustrates the negative side of blockchain-based finance: sophisticated digital infrastructure can improve financial-market efficiency, but malicious actors can also exploit wallets, smart contracts and user approvals.

Check Point Research previously found that Inferno Drainer continued operating despite its announced 2023 shutdown, with more than 30,000 wallets reportedly affected in a six-month period and losses exceeding $9 million in the campaigns it analyzed.

The distinction matters. Banco do Brasil’s digital note investment is a regulated institutional securities transaction conducted through Citi and Euroclear’s financial-market infrastructure; it is not connected to the Inferno Drainer attacks.

This could reshape institutional markets

Banco do Brasil’s $5 million transaction may ultimately matter less for its immediate value than for the precedent it establishes.

If institutions can issue, register, settle and manage conventional financial instruments through distributed ledgers without sacrificing regulatory controls or operational resilience, digital note investment could become a more important component of global capital markets.

For now, Banco do Brasil is treating the transaction as an opportunity to evaluate the technology and infrastructure behind digital securities.

But the Latin American milestone sends a powerful message: blockchain experimentation is increasingly moving from crypto-native companies into the treasury departments of major banks.

The next phase of digital note investment will therefore be measured not simply by how many institutions experiment with blockchain, but by whether the technology can deliver measurable gains in settlement efficiency, transparency, reconciliation and asset management.

Banco do Brasil’s Citi transaction suggests that institutional blockchain finance has entered a more serious—and potentially transformative—stage.
