Nikita Bier rolls out X algorithm change to boost visibility for Crypto Twitter mutuals

A new X algorithm change designed to prioritize mutual connections is reviving Crypto Twitter after months of complaints over declining visibility and community engagement.

X’s Head of Product Nikita Bier announced an algorithm update on July 13 to boost visibility of posts between mutual followers, addressing months of complaints that Crypto Twitter content had been buried by the platform’s recommendation system.

The update comes after months of criticism from cryptocurrency traders, developers and industry leaders, who argued that reduced reach had disrupted one of the crypto sector’s most important channels for real-time discussion, market updates and community building.

Crypto Twitter regains visibility after X algorithm update

For much of 2026, Crypto Twitter users complained that conversations on the platform had become increasingly difficult to follow as posts from familiar accounts disappeared from their feeds.

Seeking to address those concerns, X introduced what it described as a targeted algorithm adjustment focused on improving interactions between users who already follow one another.

Announcing the rollout, Nikita Bier, Head of Product at X, explained the reasoning behind the update.

“We’re rolling out a small tweak to boost visibility of your posts to your mutuals.” — Nikita Bier, Head of Product, X

Bier added:

“We noticed this data was missing from the algo and it made your friends appear less in your replies. This resulted in the reply section feeling more like a battleground with people you don’t recognize.” — Nikita Bier, Head of Product, X

According to Bier, the adjustment is intended to allow communities with shared interests to form more naturally by prioritizing posts from people users already know and regularly engage with.

For Crypto Twitter, where conversations often revolve around breaking news, token launches, blockchain development and market sentiment, the update was widely interpreted as an effort to restore a sense of community that many users believed had gradually disappeared.

The change also follows several broader product updates by X this year, including revised creator monetization policies that reward original content and the introduction of a new video editor aimed at content creators.

Why Crypto Twitter users criticized X’s algorithm

The enthusiasm surrounding the latest update reflects months of growing frustration across Crypto Twitter.

Earlier this year, X revised its API policies to limit applications that rewarded users for posting content, a move designed to reduce AI-generated spam and low-quality engagement commonly associated with so-called “InfoFi” applications.

While the policy sought to improve overall content quality, many cryptocurrency users reported an unintended consequence. They argued that legitimate posts from respected analysts, developers and traders became increasingly difficult to discover, while unrelated content dominated their timelines.

Because Crypto Twitter has historically served as one of the industry’s fastest sources of market intelligence, project announcements and technical discussions, reduced visibility affected more than user engagement. Many participants said it disrupted how information circulated throughout the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Before the latest adjustment, Bier had suggested that some of the visibility problems stemmed from posting habits within the community itself, arguing that excessive posting and low-effort replies reduced meaningful engagement. His comments drew criticism from many crypto users who believed the issue was rooted in the recommendation system rather than community behavior.

One user summarized that frustration by writing:

“The X algo used to foster community growth by showing what you and the people you follow care about. Now it serves as a centralized funnel that prioritizes more TikTok-like, dopamine-centric, mindless content… Make communities great again.” — X user

Industry voices defend Crypto Twitter’s role

The debate over Crypto Twitter extended beyond ordinary users and attracted prominent figures from across the digital asset industry.

Among the most vocal critics was Ki Young Ju, Founder of CryptoQuant, who argued that bot activity—not crypto content itself—was responsible for declining visibility.

“This is why ‘crypto’ posts are getting banned by the X algorithm… It is absurd that X would rather ban crypto than improve its bot detection.” — Ki Young Ju, Founder, CryptoQuant

Ju pointed to what he described as millions of bot-generated posts flooding the platform daily, arguing that improving spam detection would be more effective than limiting cryptocurrency-related content.

The controversy intensified further in April when Bier disclosed that cryptocurrency had become the most-muted topic on X, surpassing politics, sports, business and international affairs.

Around the same period, X also introduced a “snooze” feature for Premium subscribers, allowing users to temporarily hide specific topics from their feeds for 24 hours. Bier described the feature as a way to let users “crank up or turn down the slop,” referring to unwanted or repetitive content.

Those developments reinforced concerns that Crypto Twitter was steadily losing prominence on a platform long regarded as the cryptocurrency industry’s digital town square.

Crypto Twitter community welcomes the latest change

The July 13 algorithm update has been greeted positively by many members of Crypto Twitter, with users reporting that posts from previously unseen accounts were once again appearing in their timelines.

One user wrote that the update allowed them to see crypto accounts they had not encountered “in years,” while another declared simply that “crypto twitter is back. it’s time.”

Even Coinbase, one of the world’s largest publicly traded cryptocurrency exchanges, joined the conversation by encouraging users to engage with a post intended to help restore Crypto Twitter content to their feeds.

The update also carries added significance because of Bier’s familiarity with the digital asset industry. Before joining X as Head of Product in June 2025, he served as an adviser to the Solana Foundation, focusing on consumer-facing blockchain applications.

Whether the latest changes fully restore engagement remains to be seen. However, for many users, the renewed visibility of familiar voices marks an important step toward rebuilding Crypto Twitter as a central hub for crypto discussions, market analysis and industry news.
