Indonesian police are investigating the abduction of a Russian national in South Kuta, Bali, who was allegedly held captive for nearly 30 hours and beaten until he surrendered access to his cryptocurrency accounts.

The Bali Russian kidnapping, which police said occurred on July 2 in Badung District, is being investigated by the Bali Regional Police as a case involving alleged kidnapping, assault, and violent theft.

Authorities are examining CCTV footage, digital evidence, and witness statements to identify those responsible for the Bali Russian kidnapping, while also assessing the victim’s financial losses linked to the reported cryptocurrency theft.

Bali Russian kidnapping began after victim left restaurant

According to the Bali Regional Police, the alleged Bali Russian kidnapping unfolded as the victim, identified only by the initials AI, was returning from Hedonist Restaurant to a villa in Pecatu Village on the evening of July 2.

Police said a black Nissan Serena intercepted the victim before two masked individuals emerged, handcuffed him, and forced him into the vehicle.

Investigators believe the victim was then transported to another building, where he was allegedly detained against his will for almost 30 hours.

During a press briefing in Denpasar on July 9, Bali Police Head of Public Relations Senior Commissioner Ariasandy outlined the victim’s account of the incident.

“According to the victim’s statement, for nearly 30 hours the victim was intimidated, beaten, and kicked by the perpetrators.” — Senior Commissioner Ariasandy, Head of Public Relations, Bali Regional Police

Police said the alleged violence was intended to force the victim to reveal the password to a cryptocurrency account.

Authorities also reported that the victim’s Xiaomi smartphone was stolen during the ordeal. Investigators believe the suspects later used a key found on the victim’s motorcycle to enter Villa Ukulele, where they allegedly seized another mobile phone believed to provide access to the victim’s crypto assets.

The victim was eventually released during the early hours of July 4 outside Udayana University Hospital in Jimbaran. After his release, he immediately sought emergency medical treatment.

Police expand Bali Russian kidnapping investigation

What initially began as a missing person report has since evolved into a full criminal investigation into the Bali Russian kidnapping, with police pursuing allegations of kidnapping, assault, and violent theft.

Senior Commissioner Ariasandy said investigators have interviewed several witnesses while conducting forensic examinations at four separate locations connected to the case.

Those locations include Hedonist Restaurant, the site in Pecatu where the victim was allegedly abducted, Villa Ukulele, and the area outside Udayana University Hospital where the victim was released.

Investigators are also reviewing CCTV recordings and carrying out mobile phone data analysis in an effort to reconstruct the suspects’ movements before, during, and after the alleged Bali Russian kidnapping.

According to police, authorities are still working to establish the identities and nationalities of the suspects involved.

In addition, investigators are assessing the financial losses resulting from the reported theft of cryptocurrency assets, though officials have not disclosed the estimated value of the stolen holdings.

Authorities pursue suspects in Bali Russian kidnapping case

The Bali Russian kidnapping has drawn attention to the increasing intersection between violent crime and digital assets, as criminals increasingly target cryptocurrency holders for access to private wallets and account credentials rather than conventional cash or valuables.

While investigators have yet to determine the full scope of the theft, police indicated that cryptocurrency access appeared to be a primary motive behind the alleged assault.

Senior Commissioner Ariasandy confirmed that investigators continue gathering both physical and digital evidence as the search for those responsible continues.

“Investigators are still verifying the identities of the suspects and their nationality.” — Senior Commissioner Ariasandy, Head of Public Relations, Bali Regional Police

Authorities also stressed that the investigation remains active and that every reported offense, including those involving foreign nationals, is handled under Indonesia’s legal framework.

“The Bali Regional Police reiterated that every report, including cases involving foreign nationals, is processed thoroughly under prevailing legal procedures.” — Bali Regional Police

The investigation into the Bali Russian kidnapping remains ongoing, with police continuing to analyze surveillance footage, examine telecommunications data, and collect witness testimony. No arrests have been announced, and investigators have not publicly identified any suspects.
