SoftBank plunges 10.7% as Altman backs Amodei’s call to slow AI development

Asian shares came under pressure Monday as investors reassessed the outlook for artificial intelligence after leading AI executives called for a slower pace of development, sending SoftBank and major semiconductor stocks sharply lower.

The sell-off spread across several of Asia’s technology-heavy markets on September 14, with investors reacting to growing concerns that tighter safety requirements.

SoftBank Group, one of OpenAI’s major investors, was among the biggest casualties, falling 10.7% in Japan after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman backed Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s call for the industry to moderate the speed at which increasingly capable AI systems are developed.

Companies producing memory chips, semiconductor equipment and advanced processors have attracted substantial investor interest because AI data centers require enormous amounts of computing capacity.

Asian Shares React To A New Ai Risk Debate

The immediate catalyst for the decline in Asian shares was not weaker corporate earnings or a sudden collapse in technology demand. Instead, investors were responding to a developing debate within the AI industry about whether technological progress is moving faster than safety mechanisms can keep up.

Amodei has argued that the industry should deliberately moderate its development pace, giving researchers, companies and governments additional time to strengthen safeguards. His position gained unusual prominence after Altman publicly supported the idea.

The consequences were visible across regional markets. South Korea’s Kospi dropped 3.3%, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 declined 0.8%. SoftBank suffered a considerably steeper loss, reflecting its direct exposure to the AI investment cycle through its OpenAI stake.

Morningstar investment researcher Dan Baker said SoftBank’s decline could reflect fears that regulators might intervene if concerns over AI safety become more serious.

SoftBank bears the brunt of AI uncertainty

Among Asian shares, SoftBank was particularly vulnerable because its investment strategy has become increasingly connected to the future of artificial intelligence.

The Japanese conglomerate has positioned itself as a major technology investor, with OpenAI representing one of its most prominent AI-related holdings. As a result, changes in sentiment toward OpenAI and the broader AI sector can have an immediate effect on SoftBank’s valuation.

The 10.7% decline therefore represented more than a routine technology-sector pullback. It reflected the market’s attempt to reassess the value of an investment portfolio that depends heavily on continued confidence in AI’s commercial expansion.

The pressure extended beyond SoftBank. SK Hynix fell 6.4% in South Korea, while Samsung Electronics declined 4.1%. In Japan, Kioxia Holdings lost 6.4% and Tokyo Electron dropped 1%. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., one of the world’s most important advanced-chip producers, fell 1.2%.

These moves are important because memory manufacturers and semiconductor equipment suppliers sit at the heart of the AI infrastructure chain.

AI companies require increasingly powerful processors and large quantities of high-performance memory, while chipmakers need expensive manufacturing equipment to expand capacity.

For years, expectations surrounding that demand have supported high valuations across the technology sector. Monday’s trading showed how quickly those expectations can be challenged when investors begin questioning whether AI development will continue at its previous pace.

Oil Prices Add Another Layer Of Market Pressure

The weakness in Asian shares was accompanied by renewed strength in oil prices, creating an additional source of uncertainty for investors.

Brent crude rose 2.8% to $107.55 a barrel, while U.S. crude gained 2.9% to $102.90. The increase followed the shutdown of a major Saudi Arabian oil pipeline after an attack, raising concerns about the security of global energy supplies.

The oil market is also being influenced by continuing tensions involving the United States, Iran and the broader Middle East. Higher energy prices can complicate the inflation outlook because increased fuel and transportation costs can feed into consumer and business prices.

The implications extend to monetary policy. Investors are watching the Federal Reserve closely ahead of its meeting this week, particularly because inflation remains above the central bank’s 2% target.

Higher energy prices could make it more difficult for policymakers to ease monetary conditions quickly if inflationary pressures intensify.

ING commodities strategists Warren Patterson and Ewa Manthey said that despite the uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, substantial oil volumes were continuing to move through the crucial shipping route.

Technology stocks are facing questions about AI growth at the same time that energy-sensitive sectors are dealing with rising commodity costs.

What The AI Slowdown Means For Investors

The latest weakness in Asian shares does not necessarily mean the AI investment cycle is ending. Rather, the market is beginning to distinguish between the long-term potential of artificial intelligence and the speed at which that potential can translate into corporate spending and earnings.

AI adoption continues to expand across software, cloud computing, data centers and enterprise services. However, the companies supplying the infrastructure may face greater volatility if investors believe spending will be delayed or subjected to additional oversight.

OpenAI’s decision not to pursue an initial public offering in 2026 also adds another dimension to the story. Altman said the company would remain focused on safety rather than proceeding with a public listing this year, according to the AP report.

For investors, the combination of a delayed IPO, calls for slower AI development and growing regulatory scrutiny could encourage a more selective approach to AI-related equities.

The immediate reaction across Asian shares demonstrates that markets are highly sensitive to changes in the narrative surrounding artificial intelligence.

Companies once viewed almost exclusively through the lens of AI growth are now also being evaluated for regulatory exposure, capital requirements, valuation risk and their dependence on continued infrastructure spending.

At the same time, the broader market remains supported by gains on Wall Street from Friday. The S&P 500 rose 0.9%, the Dow gained 1% and the Nasdaq advanced 1%, ending a four-session losing streak.

The next phase of trading will likely depend on how investors interpret the AI industry’s safety debate, whether governments respond with additional regulation and how quickly companies continue spending on AI infrastructure.

Monetary policy and oil prices will remain equally important as markets assess the broader economic environment.

Right now, Asian shares are signaling that the AI boom is entering a more complicated stage—one in which technological ambition, safety concerns, regulation, energy costs and investor expectations increasingly collide.
