X has expanded its Cashtags system in the United States, giving users a new route from cryptocurrency and stock discussions to participating trading platforms.
The announcement was made in September 2026, and connects supported asset symbols with Coinbase, Gemini, Kraken, Interactive Brokers and Moomoo.
Bitcoin cashtags gain a direct trading route
Bitcoin is among the cryptocurrencies supported through the new Cashtags experience. Users who encounter $BTC on X can access a dedicated asset page containing market information and posts connected to the cryptocurrency before choosing an available trading provider.
The system does not turn X itself into a cryptocurrency exchange. Instead, the platform operates as an intermediary discovery and referral layer, while participating companies remain responsible for account creation, identity verification, asset availability and transaction execution.
Kraken, for example, has confirmed its participation in the U.S. program and says its integration covers nearly 2,500 assets across its centralized and decentralized trading offerings. However, that figure does not mean every asset will automatically be available through X for every customer.
The expansion also includes Coinbase and Gemini on the cryptocurrency side, while Interactive Brokers and Moomoo provide additional routes for stocks and other financial products.
As a result, Cashtags are evolving beyond a simple way to follow conversations about an asset. They now form part of a broader connection between financial information, social discussion and external market infrastructure.
X keeps trade execution outside its platform
Despite the new functionality, X is not executing trades directly. Users are redirected to the selected partner once they choose the “Trade” option, meaning the external brokerage or exchange remains responsible for the transaction.
Account onboarding, customer verification, asset availability and trading conditions remain under the control of each participating company. The approach also differs from X Money, the company’s separate payments initiative.
The current Cashtag program does not indicate that users can use an X Money balance to fund transactions on Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, Interactive Brokers or Moomoo. Instead, the transaction process moves from X to the selected financial provider.
X has also not disclosed the commercial terms governing its relationships with the five participating companies. It remains unclear whether the platform receives referral payments, revenue sharing or other compensation when users move from Cashtags to partner platforms.
Cashtags build on X’s broader financial strategy
The latest development represents another stage in X’s effort to make its platform more useful for financial discussions. Earlier Smart Cashtags allowed users to identify specific stocks and cryptocurrencies, view live charts and follow related posts.
The company previously introduced support for cryptocurrency contract addresses, helping distinguish tokens that might have identical or similar ticker symbols.
The new trading connections add another layer to that infrastructure. X can now take a user from an asset-related conversation to a participating trading platform, although execution still happens outside the social network.
X previously estimated that its April trading pilot generated approximately $1 billion in global trading volume within several days.
The figure was supplied by X and has not been independently audited, so it should be treated as a company estimate rather than independently verified market data.
At the same time, the new system does not eliminate the need for investors to evaluate liquidity, fees, custody arrangements, regulatory eligibility and the specific assets offered by each exchange.
X has not announced when the U.S. program will expand to additional countries or whether more trading companies will join. Kraken has indicated that there is more to come, but no timetable or additional partners have been formally disclosed.
The immediate development, therefore, is not an X-operated crypto exchange but a tighter link between social-market conversations and established trading platforms.
As Cashtags become connected to more financial services, the distance between seeing an asset discussed online and accessing a market for that asset continues to shrink.
The current U.S. rollout establishes the infrastructure, while future partner additions and broader geographic availability will determine how far the system develops.
