UAE and Swedish authorities have arrested seven people, including an Interpol-wanted fugitive accused of leading the network, after tracing a $7.1 million crypto money-laundering trail that investigators say also exposed links to organized crime and contract killings.

Crypto laundering network moved SEK70 million

Authorities said the network handled approximately SEK70 million over a 10-month period, equivalent to about AED26.5 million. The funds allegedly included cash proceeds generated through criminal activities before being redirected to other criminal entities. Cryptocurrency was also used to transfer and move the value of the funds.

UAE had previously announced that it has tapped Avalanche to power blockchain infrastructure behind its 12 million-user digital identity system

The precise cryptocurrency assets involved were not identified by the UAE Ministry of Interior in its announcement. Authorities also did not disclose the identities of the seven people arrested or provide details about the specific criminal operations that generated the proceeds.

Instead, investigators focused on following the financial flows.

That approach is significant because crypto laundering can leave a digital transaction trail even when individuals attempt to separate cryptocurrency movements from the underlying criminal activity.

In this case, authorities said analysis of those transactions, combined with other digital evidence, helped investigators identify financial relationships extending beyond the suspected laundering network.

The findings reportedly connected the network to organized crime and contract killings. Authorities have not publicly detailed the individual cases allegedly connected to those financial flows, meaning the precise nature of those links remains subject to the ongoing legal proceedings.

The arrests also demonstrate the international dimension of crypto laundering investigations. The suspected leader was outside Sweden when investigators located him, requiring cooperation between Swedish authorities and their counterparts in the UAE.

Interpol Red Notice leads investigators to UAE suspect

The suspected leader had fled Sweden and was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice over suspected money laundering offenses, according to the UAE Ministry of Interior. A Red Notice is an international request to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition or similar legal action; it is not itself an international arrest warrant.

The UAE said extensive searches, investigations and monitoring, supported by intelligence sharing with Swedish authorities, allowed investigators to establish the suspect’s whereabouts in the country.

His arrest was coordinated with simultaneous arrests in Sweden, where six other alleged members of the network were detained. Legal proceedings have been initiated against all seven suspects, according to the UAE ministry.

The operation illustrates the importance of cross-border cooperation in crypto laundering cases, where suspects, cash and digital assets can move through different jurisdictions.

Brigadier Abdulaziz Al Ahmad, Director General of the Federal Criminal Police at the UAE Ministry of Interior, said the operation demonstrated the importance of international cooperation in following criminal money flows.

“The UAE reaffirms its firm commitment to pursuing individuals wanted by justice and combating transnational organized crime.” — Brigadier Abdulaziz Al Ahmad, Director General of the Federal Criminal Police, UAE Ministry of Interior.

Al Ahmad said the UAE would continue working with international partners to track criminal networks, disrupt their financing and take legal action against people who use the country for criminal activity.

Crypto laundering evidence exposes wider criminal links

The cryptocurrency component became particularly important as investigators attempted to establish where the money moved and who ultimately benefited from it.

According to the UAE ministry, tracing the transactions and analyzing digital evidence exposed financial links to other criminal activities, including organized crime and contract killings.

That means the investigation was not limited to determining whether money had been moved through cryptocurrency. Investigators used the financial trail as an investigative tool to identify relationships within a wider criminal ecosystem.

The case therefore illustrates a central feature of modern crypto laundering investigations: blockchain transactions can become evidence rather than simply a mechanism for concealing funds.

Cryptocurrencies can allow value to be transferred across borders without the same physical movement associated with cash. But transactions recorded on public blockchains can also be analyzed retrospectively, particularly when investigators can connect wallet activity with individuals, exchanges, devices or other digital evidence.

In the UAE-Sweden investigation, authorities did not disclose the specific blockchain analytics methods used or identify the wallets and cryptocurrency services involved. The ministry instead described the evidence more broadly as cryptocurrency transaction tracing combined with digital analysis.

That distinction is important because the existence of cryptocurrency transactions does not, by itself, establish criminal conduct. The allegations in this case concern the wider financial activity attributed by investigators to the network, and the suspects remain subject to legal proceedings.

UAE-Sweden cooperation targets crypto laundering

The arrests followed direct security coordination and intelligence sharing between the UAE and Sweden. Authorities said the joint effort allowed them to identify the alleged leader’s location and coordinate arrests in both countries at the same time.

Anders Wiberg, Police Commissioner and Head of the International Division of the Swedish Police Authority, credited the partnership with helping investigators complete the operation.

“The close and effective cooperation with the United Arab Emirates was a key factor in achieving the successful outcome of this case, and we express our sincere gratitude to the UAE authorities for their valuable cooperation and support.” — Anders Wiberg, Police Commissioner and Head of the International Division, Swedish Police Authority.

For investigators, the case demonstrates how crypto laundering can require cooperation between financial-crime investigators, digital-forensics teams and international law-enforcement agencies.

The UAE ministry said the operation also reflected the importance of exchanging information and expertise when pursuing international criminal networks and tracing their financial activities.

The arrests do not conclude the investigation. With legal proceedings now underway, authorities will still need to establish the allegations against each suspect through the relevant judicial processes.
