Anthropic’s Claude can now see your bank balances, spending, but it can’t move a cent

The new AI-powered financial tool allows US subscribers to connect bank accounts, analyse spending and review transactions, intensifying competition between Anthropic and OpenAI for a larger share of the personal finance market.

Anthropic has launched Claude Personal Finance, a US beta that lets subscribers connect their bank accounts and cards to Claude through Plaid and ask it about spending, bills and balances.

The access is read-only, so Claude cannot move money, and the launch puts Anthropic in direct competition with OpenAI, whose ChatGPT finance tools arrived in May.

Anthropic introduces Claude Personal Finance for US subscribers

Anthropic introduced Claude Personal Finance on November 5, 2026, launching a beta service in the United States that allows eligible subscribers to connect their bank accounts and payment cards to its AI assistant.

The development places Anthropic in more direct competition with OpenAI, which has already introduced financial management capabilities within ChatGPT.

Both companies are attempting to establish their platforms as convenient destinations for consumers seeking assistance with everyday financial decisions.

Through Claude Personal Finance, users can connect supported financial accounts through Plaid, a financial technology company that facilitates connections between banking institutions and third-party applications.

Once connected, users can ask Claude questions about their spending habits, account balances and financial transactions. The assistant can also examine recurring expenses, identify potentially duplicated payments, highlight increasing bills and calculate interest paid.

For consumers managing several financial accounts, these capabilities could make it easier to understand where their money goes without manually reviewing individual transactions.

Claude Personal Finance enters an expanding AI finance market

Anthropic’s launch comes approximately six months after OpenAI introduced its own personal finance experience in ChatGPT on May 15, 2026.

OpenAI’s product allows eligible users to connect financial accounts, review spending patterns, monitor bills and subscriptions, examine investment information and explore budgeting options. Like Anthropic’s offering, it relies on Plaid to facilitate account connections.

OpenAI has also reported that more than 200 million people ask ChatGPT money-related questions every month.

For Anthropic, Claude Personal Finance represents an opportunity to compete in a market where ChatGPT already has an established presence.

Plaid is another important participant in this development. Since both AI platforms use its infrastructure, the company could benefit from increased adoption regardless of which assistant eventually attracts more financial users.

The competition may also influence traditional financial institutions. If consumers increasingly depend on AI assistants to understand banking charges, compare financial products and review account activity, banks could gradually lose some direct interactions with their customers.

Banks face competition for customer relationships

The emergence of Claude Personal Finance raises questions about the future relationship between consumers and conventional banking institutions.

Banks have traditionally controlled the primary channels through which customers access financial information. Their websites and mobile applications provide account balances, transaction records, payment information and other services.

However, AI assistants could become an additional layer between financial institutions and their customers.

A report published by McKinsey on April 30, 2026, examined how generative AI agents could change retail banking relationships.

The research highlighted the possibility that consumers might increasingly rely on external AI platforms to identify financial products, compare options and make decisions without regularly visiting their banks’ applications.

The report also discussed growing consumer use of generative AI for financial tasks, indicating that AI-powered services could become more influential in the banking industry.

The development does not mean banks will immediately lose their relevance. Financial institutions still control the underlying accounts, deposits, lending services and payment infrastructure that customers depend on.

The more immediate concern is whether AI platforms will become the preferred starting point for financial research and everyday money management.

Privacy, accuracy and regulation remain major obstacles

Despite the opportunities, the expansion of AI-powered financial services comes with significant risks involving data privacy, accuracy and consumer trust.

Anthropic has designed Claude Personal Finance with read-only access. This means the assistant can examine information from connected accounts but cannot initiate bank transfers, move funds, manage investments or independently execute financial transactions.

The company also states that the feature is not intended to provide investment advice. Users are encouraged to verify important financial figures directly with their banks because AI-generated responses can contain errors.

Privacy is another important consideration. Through Plaid, users authorise access to selected financial accounts. Claude can view bank names, account types, the final four digits of account numbers, balances, credit limits and transaction records covering up to 24 months.

Anthropic says conversations within its Personal Finance hub are not used to train its models. Users can also disconnect their accounts when they no longer want to share their financial information.

A Deloitte study published in August 2026, involving almost 2,600 US banking customers, revealed that 79% trusted information from bank websites when researching financial products, compared with 49% for generative AI tools.

The research also found that 83% of respondents would feel anxious about an AI agent taking action on their finances without permission..

What Claude Personal Finance means for crypto investors

The growing competition between Anthropic and OpenAI deserves attention beyond the immediate banking industry.

Crypto investors often manage several financial accounts, exchange balances, subscriptions and traditional investment products. AI-powered financial assistants could eventually make it easier to organise these activities and understand overall spending patterns.

However, Claude Personal Finance should not be mistaken for a cryptocurrency trading platform or an investment management service.

Its current capabilities focus on analysing connected financial information rather than executing trades or managing digital assets.

The bigger development is the growing convergence between artificial intelligence and financial services.

As companies compete to provide more useful financial tools, the ability to interpret personal financial information could become an important competitive advantage.

For Anthropic, the immediate challenge is to convince consumers that Claude can provide reliable financial assistance while protecting sensitive information. For OpenAI, the arrival of another major competitor creates additional pressure to improve its existing financial products.

Claude Personal Finance represents another step towards AI becoming a regular part of personal money management. Whether it can challenge ChatGPT successfully will depend on adoption, accuracy, consumer confidence and the company’s ability to expand beyond its initial US market.
